I was lucky to find this fresh rebuild complete with new paint and yellow safety stripe. Clean as any UP I have ever seen . . . or perhaps ever will. I found her over in Kemmerer, Wyoming this summer past. LOL, oh, by the way it is a SD 40-2R for those whom care of such, an oldie but goodie.

Morning Maureen . . . I thought I might find the two of you. I have been shooting and saving up for winter, when I have a bit more time. Well a lot more time, lol. We are froze up for the most part and have snow so here are some of my offerings.

Wow, that is clean. I still don't like the yellow tape though. It needs a little more red trim, like they used to have.

Cool shot, I don't remember the last time I saw a SD40-2 in real life. I love how long the "porches" are on these engines.

Wow, that is clean! Nice catch.
I wish they'd wash engines once in a while.

haven't seen a snoot nose in person in a log time, I think it took 2 SD40-2s to replace 1 sd90.....Cleanis right, UP Had a auction a few years ago to get rid of "crappy" equipment to 3rd class railroads like Ohio Central etc. When I was in Ashtubual Harbour, I was switching cars, at the time I didn't see any SD40's, the yard switching lasted until 11:39 PM....long night in the yard.

So you are going to be seasonal. I guess I should hope for long, cold Wyoming winters, then.;)
You were the first person on the forum who's photos caught my attention and made me say, "Wow". Now I am looking forward to this year's batch.

Nice shot. That is one clean engine, I don't think I've ever seen one that clean, so how long will it take to get dirty. :)

Hello Sandy . . . one trip to the coal loading platform should about do it. Rumor has it that Union Pacific has all of its wash racks out in the high desert, they are waiting for rain to turn them on.

Nice shot. It has been a long time since I've seen an SD40-2. Is it in yard service (hump) or road service?

Appears to be in Road service.. i.e. Dithchlights and no remote control tag:rolleyes: , cleaned up, looks to be re serviced, Etc.....Them SD 40's are strong, pretty damn strong/ tuff, They been in use fora bout 30+ years.. It's usually the GP40's that are "switchers", but that varies yard to yard.

I think it is in their local pool, I caught this on Labor Day, 2005 and all of the "Locals" were in the yard for the weekend. I had hoped for an wing on the front of the rebuilds . . . but it is nice enough as it is.

You'll get sick of them, it's nice to catch them with out them now, sooner or later all the originals will be gone.... I'm not saying the wings aren't nice but, catch the non wings while you still can :)

Good to see you and your duck. It's been a while.
I'm already sick of Armour Yellow, and now they're even replacing the red stripe. I've never seen one like this before, but I'll be looking now. We do see a few second generation diesels around here, but they're getting fewer and farther in beteween. I saw a couple yellow tunnel motors the other day, and almost got sick.:lol:

...and yellow safety stripe. :D Seems a bit redundant, doesn't it? Pretty shot!

The new safety stripe is a government thing. All motive power, and I think cars too? Must have either a yellow or white safety stripe. This is to improve visibility of the train on crossings that do not have flashers and such. It would seem people drive into the middle of the train on dark nights . . . that's not good.
I much and away prefer the old red stripe, balanced out the design scheme, but the NEW yellow or white stripe is a good way to know the loco you are looking at is new or just from the shop. I think they have about two years to make the switch to all equipment. As best I know they are only placing the updated safety stripe on equipment at time of scheduled service.
