Hi all,

I have G1 for quite a while now and find this to be a very good camera, however some improvements are wanted. Recently I stopped at local photo shop and played with G2 unit - G2 has all I ever wanted to have in G1, easy manual focus, 4 levels of resolution, etc.

The question is: Does any one have any type of information from Canon on it's firmware improvements? Most of differences between G1 and G2 is due to it's firmware and on my opinion can be done for G1 too, will Canon ever attempt to improve it's G1 version or we shouldn't expect to see new firmware? I tried several times to contact Canon regarding this, but response was standard - Canon will release new firmware if development team will find it necessary, no any type of comments on any plans to do so whatsoever.

Pekka has a great "Wish list" on this site, but is there any indication that Canon even aware of such needs in G1?

At least the Digital Camera Solutions Ver 7.1 (shipped with GS) works as an upgrade to the G1 software...but use the G1 USB driver! Strange and sad it may seem, Canon has not made the new CP 10 photo printer compatible with the G1!! I am sure the firmware can be upgraded to be more flexy....but Canon want us to buy new cameras rather than stick with old (1 year!) ones.....more like the Windows OS upgrades now....spend, spend and SPEND!

This may be old hat by now, but Canon have just advised me that 1.0.0.3 firmware upgrade will be available on the net after 23 Jan 2002.

Hmmm....

Wouldn't it (theoretical) be possible to dissemble the G2 firmware, and pick and choose from it and put into a dissembled firmware for the G1, and assemble it?

Is there a wizz out there? :-)

I have not had time to download this myself, but the 1.0.0.3 firmware is evidently available at http://www.canon.co.jp/Imaging/PSG1/PSG1_Firmware-e.html

Canon's statement for new software:

The internal charging function for BP-511 Battery Packs that have become over-discharged is improved.

So no improvement on autofocus, support of photoprinter etc. so i think it's a small step...

Upgrade went fine, even on the risky battery power.
PDF Procedure is spot-on helpful.

I wonder what would happen if you tried to upgrade the G1 firmware to the G2 firmware? Im not gonna try it, but what it turned your G1 into a G2 with a 3.2MP CCD?

My guess is that it wouldn't even be possible. I would think that there is some code in the camera that checks the firmware first before proceeding with the upgrade. I doubt that it would let you load the wrong firmware. If it did, I would guess that the camera would be rendered inoperable.
