Since I received my 580Ex I have been reading the stickies and lurking and reading the responses posted here in this forum. They have really helped me. I also went out and got a gray card. Makes a big difference when not using flash. Today I did some experiments using the advice I have seen here recently. Everything I read fell into place and I was able to properly expose with and without the flash. When I wanted the background more exposed I would adjust the shutter speed and or iso and I could see what you have been talking about. It really felt good. I just wanted to thank all of you who have been posting responses to the flash questions lately. It has really helped me. Especially you Tim. I can tell sometimes that your patience is wearing thin but you do a great job of explaining things. Be aware that even if it appears that the poster doesnt get what you are saying, other lurkers such as I do. Thank you so much.:D

Tim, I didnt mean to imply that you come across impatient or anything, I just mean that sometimes I know it must get frustrating explaining the same thing over and over again. I know I would get frustrated. I just wanted you and the others to know it is appreciated.
This is firt picture that I have taken with my new flash that I have felt good enough about to post. I like it except for that shadow under the chin.

Great picture QBee! It's good to have a willing model. My 10 year old is very willing, when not at dance, recitals, school, friends, etc. I too learn a lot form listening (reading) the posts. Keep posting images.

No, I can be impatient, grumpy, or at times offensive. Glad I can help you though! Nice picture, a reflector underneath the chin might help with the shadows.

What's wrong with almost 9K posts in a year?

I have to agree with Queenbee (Char). I got my 580 last weekend and I read many a thread prior to buying it and still got frustrated. This forum is a great place to get answers. I wouldn't have even known that half of this stuff existed if not for the helpful people here.

BTW Char, try shooting manual (camera settings) with that flash. Maybe you already have.

Have a read of this thread too (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=107588), especially the links J Rabin gives. It's pretty damn advanced and not for the feint hearted but IMHO the more you know the better.

I shot a wedding today and to be honest I barely had time to blink, let alone think about NEVEC.

It's way too early to read those now. Maybe later after I perform this brain surgery...

You always shoot manual anyway (I think) so NEVEC shouldn't be of concern to you. ;)

I shoot Av most of the time for weddings, with flash as fillin. I don't like using flash as the main light unless I really have to.

Why you little... ;) :p
