No, we sure don't stay in one place! My family (parents) have been in the same house in Campbell for 30 years. Hubby and I bought and sold lots of houses in SoCAl and finally were able to live up here again. We bought in SJ, hated the house and now rent in MH. We'll buy next year and then that's IT! If I never pack another box, I'll be happy!
I saw earlier in this post that I live close to your daughter. It's nice to see so many NoCAL people on this thread. We should get a "Bay Area" group together...

Morgan Hill is very nice, a quiet town. We may go to the Christmas parade and tree lighting on Sat. after the Wine and Craft at Guggliemo winery. Then dinner at my sons and DIL, also in MH, off Tenant.
A bay area get together would be a great idea!

You think it's quiet now? I moved to San Jose in 1969 and commuted to Hollister every day for a few years. Even though there was no freeway then, we barely slowed down for Morgan Hill.

So true, Belmondo. San Jose used to be "quiet". I had no idea how much it would change in the 13 years I was away. I visited my family regularly, but wow, such change...One of the reasons why we didn't stay in SJ very long. MH is more like what SJ was when I moved to Boston. I remember taking barrel racing lessons in San Martin, there was NOTHIN' there. Hollister had to be even more rural than MH, SM then. Is there a word for that kind of rural??? "Desolate"? :-)
Margie, I think we might catch the MH Christmas parade this weekend...either that or Los Gatos. We used to be in the LG one every year in high school, so we're feeling a little nostalgic!

I am not sure of the pruneyard store but we had a store in Santa Clara and one in Sunnyvale when I worked there. Yes, John, Peggy, Tom, Marsha Ewert, and Jennifer Marion (Marsha's partner) were killed on Mother day, may 11th 1997. I was working at the store at the time and the local press was all over us. It was one of the lowest time of my life.
The store was closed about a year later and sold off it ;s assets. I still run into mnay old friends from there from time to time.

I'd forgotten that. I also remember when San Jose Camera was a decent store with good prices. I also enjoyed occasional trips to San Francisco to Denevi Camera. They had an excellent pro department, and tons of really interesting used equipment.
Now, it's Keeble & Schuchat. Nice folks, but their prices stink.

Just so you know, K&S will move on some prices. I have gotten good deals from them and a few that turned out to be a little high. I try to support local stores whenever I can.
I am in the process of buying a LF printer, but K&S does not support it, so online for nearly all supplies.
I think some part of Denevi is still operational. So is Los Gatos camera and San Jose is too. But many of the small Mom and Pop labs have dried up like tumbleweeds.
I am trying to get into a space for studio too, and that is still outrageous.
The Ewerts were Nikon centric and did not see the Canon Juggernaut coming, I tried to warn them as best I could that the EOS system and the early digital would trounce their existing business. They tried to sell lots of Minolta and Nikon. Funny though, right after the crash taht took their lives, it was Nikon that cut off our credit almost immediatly, same with Fuji. Kodak and Canon met with us and helped to keep us afloat.

Good to know about K&S being a little more flexible with their pricing. I do notice that they are priced higher than most other places...The rental department has been fabulous to me, too--both in price and in information.
SJ Camera is good, too. Very helpful. I try to avoid LG camera, wanting to avoid an ex! :)
Kamera Korner is still there, too. Tiny shop, but it's stuffed with equipment.
Lee, where are you looking for studio space?

Well I have looked a couple of places that are listed on craigs or or the web and the ones closest to me were not suitable for the classes I want to teach or to bring in clients, so i am still looking.

Never had a Commodore 64, but I remember using Apple IIe's, and my parents still have the original Macintosh packed away in a case (along with a dot-matrix printer).
The growth in Bakersfield is unbelievable based on the number of new high schools that have popped up in the past few years (dating back even to when Stockdale & Ridgeview opened). Unfortunately when I read the online newspaper, I tend to see more & more crime stories that just wasn't there when I was there. If the state ever gets that supertrain plan back on track (L.A. to San Francisco in an hour), Bakersfield is supposed be a stop in between.

Been there, done that. I still have an Atari 2600 cartridge, actually. It's a collector's item, and I'd forgotten all about it until I read your post.
It's a game called Custer's Revenge, by Mystique (presented by Swedish Erotica, according to the label on the cartridge). The object of the game was to get Custer through a hail of arrows from the left side of the screen to the right so he could, um... have his way with the squaw over there. This thing made the news for weeks.
Mine is still in the original case, even. Hmmm... I wonder how much this would be worth on eBay?

C-64 (and Vic 20 before that), 300 baud was flying a low altitude and you saved your programs on a cassett tape drive. Start loading a 10K program and go to lunch while you wait :0
Bakersfield is getting real close to L.A. style traffic, more people killed in gang related shootings per day than in all of Iraq. and pretty much the Meth capital.

Times have changed! I used to go to the one in Northridge when I went to CSUN, but the other one was closer to home.

And what about Fedco?
My memories of Fedco as a kid are limited to 3 things:
slices of pizza from the pizza place
the knive and cutlery shop (loaded with Rambo-knives and ninja swords...soooo 80's) on the way out
giant Toblerone chocolate bars at the checkout counter:cool:

Don't know if you had them out here...as I was brought up on the East Coast...but how about the Duggan's Bakery Delivery truck (isn't that the name of the bakery items like crumb cake, in the white box with the blue lettering) ? Yes, they used to actually do home deliveries!
And Alpha Beta grocery stores...we still call our local grocery store that sometimes, even though it has recently been called Luckys and Albertsons now.

When Gas Wars were fought on your home town corner gas stations. The combatants were not Middle Eastern countries but Flying A (Tidewater), Wilshire, Atlantic Richfield (ARCO), Signal Gas, Douglas Oil and the like.
And gas was below 20 cents per gallon and there were only "Full Service" gas stations where they checked your oil (a necessity in those days :p ) washed your windows and put air in your tires.

Sav-On was still around until just this year, though I haven't seen the ice cream cones in ages. Unfortunately, CVS bought Sav-On and is in the process of thoroughly mucking up the stores near me. Nothing in there makes sense any more, and whoever came up with that checkout counter design needs to have his head examined, because it isn't firing on all cylinders....

Good morning Californians from Bishop CA. The High Sierra's welcome you all anytime. You're pretty secluded out there, but that's a beautiful town. We drive through there a couple times each year on our way to Reno and back. It's actually longer for us to go that way, but the Owens Valley is simply one of my favorite places on the planet.
My fascination with it began long before I was ever there or had any idea how beautiful it really is. The Carson & Colorado Railroad (later the Southern Pacific Narrow Gauge R.R.) ran through there, and I used to model it. I believe there's a museum in Laws dedicated to it. Also, there was a very good book about the C&C that piqued my curiosity as a teenager (Steamcars to the Comstock by Lucius Beebe and Charles Klegg).

I remember that game. I saw it at the Wherehouse in the mall once and when I asked to see the box the guy wouldn't let me because I was underage.
I think that was towards the end of the 2600's life. I remember buying that horrible ET game that is anything but a collector's item.

Adohr Farms was in my WLA Neighborhood - we rode our Stingray bikes there to pick up milk if we ran out. Across the street was Piece O Pizza. High Point Miniature Golf and down the street was Kiddie Land on Beverly and La Cienega - now the Beverly Center. Before the Westside Pavillion was built was a small amusement park.
