All right, I am breaking my silence and coming out (of someplace other than a closet). Could somebody explain to me the merits of group shoots? I am not trashing anybody that gets together to shoot birds or something like that, it almost reminds me of hunting, which is a team sport of sorts.

Don't get me wrong, who wouldn't want to ogle others (camera) gear that's nicer than my own? But I think there is more to the group shoots than that.

Part of my reasons for being skeptical stem from a run-in with a group a few months back. I was in Santa Monica at the peir with my girl and some of our friends, and we passed a group of 5-6 guys, vests, bags and gear in tow leaving towards the parking lot. I won't lie to any of you, the first thing I thought was that these guys were dorks, but it got me wondering what they accomplished by being together and shooting.

Could some of you (Belmondo, Amped) shed some light on all this for me?

Belmondo
5th of June 2007 (Tue), 10:44
Could some of you (Belmondo, Amped) shed some light on all this for me?It's primarily social, and the opportunity of getting together with others with similar interests. I've really only been on two group shoots...last year's Great Maine Osprey Shoot, and the get-together in Cambria. We also had a group meet at Bubba's in San Anselmo, but that wasn't really a group shoot. We were there to give moral support to Dante King whose restaurant had recently been flooded.

Speaking only for myself, I can say the primary pleasure derived was from meeting a bunch of people I'd gotten to know through the forum. If that's not your cup of tea, it probably would be a waste of time and effort, especially if you're already of the opinion that other photographers are dorks.

I can totally see where you're coming from. It would be fun to put a face to alot of the people I have come in contact with over my short POTN life. Having dinner or something would be cool, but I should think we would have to go somewhere far away from here.... God forbid any of my friends see me hanging out with all the "dorks!!":lol:;)

Group shoots can be lots of fun, especially if you have a common subject interest. Don't take the flower dorks with the airplane dorks, it won't work. But, many of the clubs here in Northern CA have great outings and are across several different subjects and types of cameras. Humans are social creatures, join a club and have fun, even POTN could be considered a club of sorts.

I judge for many of the clubs in this area and the work is outstanding, they need new members and fresh blood and folks to volunteer for offices. It just depends on your idea of fun. Sure they all have there share of dorks, nerds, geeks and more than a few cross platform evangilists for their thing, but the world is made up of the above folks. NASACR? NBA? Are you kidding me? I like to have fun no matter who I am with...

I guess it depends on what you like to shoot. To start with, there are plenty of beach locations. The wedge down in Newport beach can provide some awesome surfing shots when the surf is up. In the other direction, there's the L.A. Zoo, the L.A. arboretum, and the Huntington Library (gardens). Also check out Santa Monica Pier and Venice beach. Downtown L.A. provides some interesting shooting ops, but I wouldn't go there alone with all that expensive equipment.

If you're interested in getting a GTG together, let me know... I;m definitely up for it.

If the surf is up, I would suggest The Wedge in Newport Beach. You can get some pretty amazing waves there. If you want to see samples, do a google search for "the wedge" and "Newport Beach" You should get plenty of hits.

Hey Chuck, how far is the water? Or, in other works, how long of a lens do you need?

sixsixfour
19th of June 2007 (Tue), 18:58
from the parking lot to the shore itself is roughly around 50 feet (+/- 8). you can reasonably throw a stone the size of a CF card and hit the water from the edge of the sand/parking lot by Newport Beach pier.

SoCal69
19th of June 2007 (Tue), 19:00
Hey Chuck, how far is the water? Or, in other works, how long of a lens do you need?

Actually, it's been quite a while since I have been there myself, but these waves actually break pretty close to the beach... I don't think you would need too much reach. I think at a minimum, you would need about 200mm, but you should do fine with 300 or 400mm.

Now you guys got me thinking about going when the surf pics up... I have only been once in the last 5 years (since I went digital) on an outing with another photog, but the surf was very flat, and we ended up shooting the couple of skimboarders that were there.

You may be able to find examples of photos on the web with various lenses... try a search. If nothing else, some of the photos are worth looking at.

Vacaville, CA, grew up in Vallejo, CA. Works in San Francisco, CA and Palo Alto, CA. BTW, SoCal folks, even though it is logical to say, "Norcal" Northern California Natives hardly use that term up here. Just like native folks from San Franscisco, do not call it "Frisco". Also have you noticed that everyone but folks from California, call it "Cali"? SoCal people may use it as well, but us northerners hardly use that term for our state. Just an observation.

I'm a California girl all the way!
Born in Inglewood...
My family moved to Westlake Village when I was three...
Turned 18 and got my first apartment in T.O. (Thousand Oaks)....
Married my husband (who grew up in Agoura)....
Transplanted to the desert 19 years ago; (although my husband keeps saying "it's only temporary) ;)
I love the fact that I can drive any which direction, and in under two hours hit the beach, the mountains, the desert, the city, the country, or almost anything else you can imagine!
I just wish I had taken the time to explore CA more (but I'm working on it!). I just went to the Mt. Wilson observatory for the first time EVER yesterday. They have free tours every Saturday and Sunday at 1:00, April through November; and if that marine layer ever burns off (and there's no smog) that view will be SPECTACULAR!!!
(and, of course, I brought my camera.....)

not that the pictures are fabulous....but here's an example of what you can see there....

Yeah, to me the NorCal thing never worked, but oddly I find NoCal much more palatable as it is like the reciprocal of SoCal.:)

I don't think anyone in SoCal uses Cali.

At least not the native SoCal folks...

I have...from those who don't live in CA. They think it sounds cool. Personally, I think it sounds dumb. Of course, I'm a native. ;)

I may kick with a different sort of SoCal folks...I hear "Cali" all the time. Like you, I think it sounds stupid. BTW, in a gas station the other day someone had a NorCal Old English logo on his leather jacket, turned out to be a SoCal transplant. LOL

I think NoCal is not really cool as well, looks like No California...not cool. :)

Remember that you will have the 8.25% sales tax on items sold here in CA
Drop them an email and ask about prices and availability of the items you seek prior to going to the shop and get sales persons names.

I hope this helps, if your family needs help just drop me a line and I would be glad to do what I can, I am about an hour south in San Jose / Silicon Valley.

Where abouts in SL, if I may ask?

I grew up over by John Muir Middle School. Went to SL. Graduated in 81. I run into more people in the valley that I grew up with than in SL, where I work!

Darn it, I have to work still !!!We lived there from from 1969 to 2001. We come back once or twice a month, but find ourselves getting fidgety. The pace is pretty hectic up there compared to our new home in the desert.
