There was snow in the East Bay Hills yesterday. Pics in the paper. I didn't go up to play, though - my motorcycle is sorta unstable in snow. Lousy traction, too.

Jacques,
I have Friday off, and am thinking of going up on Mt. Diablo to see what snow is left.
I think my 4x4 is probably a tad more stable than your motorcycle.
Send me a PM if you would like to drive up to the snow.

Sounds like fun. Unfortunately I have a plumbing project that is demanding my attention. Not "plumbing" as in nice clean water, "plumbing" as in drains.

meh_meli (or should I say Kevin), is that a recent photo? As in after the museum has reopened?
Or is that prior to it having closed for remodel?
How long was the wait to get in (if after the reopening)?

meh_meli
4th of January 2009 (Sun), 12:42
It is from Friday and it was raining in the morning too.
The admission line was ~100' when we were there at 11:00, after we actually entered the museum they had started to keep people out. The line for the Academy of Sciences/Steinhart was rediculous, that is the one which just opened a few months ago.
We were going to try that but didn't want to wait in the rain, not to mention that we had to walk ~1 mile from the place we parked because the garage was full.
I think the Academy will be rather full for awhile on the weekends unless you go right when they open in the morning. If you go to the DeYoung then if you have a monopod bring it, it is dim in there. Quite a few of my shots were in the 1/30th range and horrid. I was lucky with the duck at 1/15th

Killjoy
4th of January 2009 (Sun), 13:23
Thanks for the tip. I DO have a monopod. It has the odd feature of having a foot that can be converted to a little tripod base, to help steady the monopod too!

I wonder what the lines would be like on the weekdays.

meh_meli
5th of January 2009 (Mon), 00:02
Much better and you might try riding the 74x bus aka "the culture bus" for ~$7 you get an all day pass to ride all muni busses and the culture bus goes specifically to many different points of interest rather than paying for parking at different places. Since you are coming from Clayton it may make sense to ride BART then do the bus.
Unless you make it a POTN day and group commute.
If you get a weekday off it will surely help reduce the background "pollution" in your photos.

There's a reason Creedence Clearwater Revival sang "Oh Lord, I'm stuck in Lodi again!"

Heh!

It brings back a funny memory -- back in "the day" -- it would be around the year 1970, I concluded a brief stint at US Santa Barbara, grabbed a few things and hit the road hitching, going all over the state, having some pretty interesting times in pretty interesting places for a couple years until I found a place to settle down in Humboldt County, not far from Eureka.

So, during the days on the road, I foud myself hitching to Fresno to visit a young lady I had known in college, and picked up a ride on the little highway outside Sacramento, and was told they would be going to Lodi.

I had to kind of chuckle, but at the same time was curious..."Stuck in Lodi"? Hmm.

Well, long story short I learned what that song was all about, waiting as all these drivers went past the "odd young man" standing at the side of the road -- actually, I think it was a freeway onramp so that only the folks coming out of town saw me!

Well, I survived, got a ride after a good wait and made it to Fresno, yay!
