Got a call from a fighter whom I've shot fighting before (I've done a lot of MMA photography). Apparently, he is going to be on an episode of the Cake Boss and they like some photos of him (I shot). I don't know all of the details yet but just curious as to how I should approach this from a compensation standpoint.
I know I need to get an idea of exactly what they want the photos for, which will help determine what I might charge. But not sure if anyone else has any experience in dealing a tv show using photos.
Thanks.

I'd think you are going to need more details as it pertains to if they are expecting the fighter to supply his own pics (so he is responsible for the cost) or if the show is wanting to be the one asking for the pics from you (they would be responsible).
For your sake, I hope it is the show that wants these specific photos since their pockets are deeper.
Good luck!

I'm with you. I'm waiting on a call from the producer (or someone else from the show) but, apparently, they want 2 of my photos to use as still photos for the show.
We'll see what they say when I hear from them.

I'm sure its for when he walks into the bakery and they do a little "intro" on him and want to show a couple of photos of him in action.
The best question is always "what is your budget for this?".

This is that show on TLC, right?
How would they have learned about your photos, if not through the fighter?

They have researchers who will check out potential guests/contestants and could easily have just googled the person and looked at images.... alternatively the fighter may well have pointed them to the images. Either way it doesn't much matter. What is important is whose pocket the money is coming out of to pay for the images.

That is the exact question I'll be asking when I speak with them. :)

He owns a gym around the corner from them and one of the guys in the bakery grappled with him on the show. Apparently, they saw photos of him fighting (my photos) and inquired about using them on the show. I do believe they're for the intro on him.
However it turns out, I have to say it's kinda interesting. A little different than an MMA magazine wanting to publish my photos (for free). I certainly don't expect to get rich but would like some compensation. We'll see...

I'm sure there is a budget. Probably not a ton, but I bet they throw you some money.
My wedding cake is from that bakery. From 11 years ago. Before they were TV stars.

I'm certainly not expecting any kind of windfall, just would like a little something. :)
I used to live in Clifton so I know the store and the area. I'm in FL now.

Nutley is a great town. I forget the name of the bagel shop right across from the high school. Great bagels and I know the owner. Hard to get good bagels here in FL....
I got a vm from the show earlier, just haven't had a chance to call them back. Been busy editing photos from a wedding I shot.

Nutley Bagel Boy. Mike is the owner. But I think that depends on the last time you were in there. :)

The crazy tanning lady is from Nutley, but us normal people are trying to deny she is from here. She's actually from Nutlee. Yeah. Thats it. I swear.

Ok, just got off the phone with the show. Not really a big deal--i.e. not money in it. As it's gonna be on the screen for a few seconds showing this guy is a professional MMA fighter. I am asking for (at least) some credit. He mentioned they don't typically do that but I don't think I'm asking for much.
Usually, credit like this is worthless to me. But it wouldn't hurt for me to be able to say my photography has been featured (ok, a little exaggeration) on a national show like The Cake Boss. Probably wouldn't hurt my wedding business either. ;)
He's going to ask the powers that be but I can't imagine it's a big deal to throw a credit on screen.
I'll keep you posted.

I will. It wasn't at Master Po's studio on the north side of Frankilin Ave, was it?

I'm surprised by this. Maybe they can hook you up with some of their canolis?

No, Jerry Jones (was on Franklin Ave).

I'm not totally surprised but not terribly happy about it.
Personally, I don't like canolis but my wife does. :)

Seriously? If the image isn't worth anything why are they having it in the show?
Also are all the other people helping to make the show (producer, director, camera etc) working for free? If not why are you?
They are seriously suggesting you let them use the image for free and without credit? Not that credit is worth anything - if they are gracious enough to give you credit it will be buried in the end credits as they wizz up the screen faster than anyone can view them.

Yeah, I've thought more about it--talked to others about it--and told them they have to pay to use my photos. I'm waiting to hear back from them. I'll be a little surprised if they come back and say they'll pay me.

Just an update. I told them what I'd be willing to take in payment for the use of my photos...I have not heard anything back from them. This was almost a week ago.
I guess they--like so many others--figure they can get photography for FREE while they pay their producers, camera people, writers, etc.

Thanks. It's just frustrating. I (sort of) can understand when an individual wants our work for free (not that I agree with it) but, when a major TV show doesn't want to pay a few bucks, that's really ridiculous.
Oh well, I wasn't surprised.

Sorry it didn't work out but glad you stood your ground. Days of doing it for credit are over for me as well. My time is just as valuable as anyone else's.

Yeah, definitely, way to stick to your guns. So what if they were to use your photo for an intro? Itd be on the screen for like half a second, you probably wouldn't have a big 'Credit - some cool guy that gave us this photo for free/super cheap' on the image itself, you'd get buried at the bottom of the credits (if even that), so it would probably be more frustrating than beneficial.
GadgetRick

It's even worse than that. They wouldn't even give credit. LOL!

Hehehe...move on. You lost nothing since they have no intentions to pay you anyway. Yup, I am about to experience the same crap free loader from a mega big cable company. My clients, bike racers with a full time day job, pay for my photos. Why would a multi-million dollars, mega cable company won't pay for my photos?
