I was wondering if anyone would like to pass along their favorite stored settings and what type of shots they are used for. Anything would be helpful. I am off on vacation in a few days. I will be mostly with family (birthday party, family gatherings) but doing some sightseeing across Wisconsin and into Minneapolis with a trip to the Mall of America. I am cutting the umbilical cord with my Olympus C2020. The G3 is the only camera i will bring (with extra batteries!), so any hints, tips, etc. on settings would of course, be wonderful!

Hi Beth,

One of the first things I did was to set up C1, based on P mode, with flash turned off. Hence I can confidently put it into C1 mode and know the flash will not fire. I then changed the special effects to lower sharpening, based on a recommendation that you cannot undo "in-camera" sharpening but it's easy to increase sharpenness off-camera.

I have C2 based on C1 but set up as Manual focus, which I intend changing to use settings more appropriate for hyperfocal. If you do a search on that word in this forum you will find a link explaining this term. I'll probably change it to Av = f5.6.

You will note that when you power up the G3, to either C1 or C2, it will retail the lens zoom (focal length) that applied when you saved the custom setting.

Also, if you do choose to set manual focus on either C1 or C2, when you switch to that custom setting the focus control is disabled. You can reactivate it by pressing the Set button.

Beth,

I hope those here with experience with C1 & C2 settings will reply to your post....

Im a newbie, but I wanted to tell you I just got back from a 2 week vacation and used my G3 a LOT! It was brand spankin' new. We were driving quite a bit and took mostly scenery pics (mountains, canyons, forests) so I used the Landscape mode setting and was Very pleased with the results. I did take a few Macro shots of flowers, insects, and lizards so I set the dial on P and used Macro mode (the flower button). I had alot of strong light most of the time. Most of the macro shots turned out beautiful!

I did use Tv mode and set the shutter speed to 1/1000 or 1/2000 when we were taking pictures out of a moving van doing 70mph. That helped eliminate some of the blur on close objects like trees (again with lots of bright light).

The main problem I ran into was when shooting pics with the sun coming in at low angles (late afternoon) and dealt with overexposed pics or glare "prisms" in the pics. I didn't experiment with any workaround in that situation except for trying to shade the camera with my hand to elimiate the sun glare.

One really cool thing I did was use the Night Time mode on the main dial and took picture in almost TOTAL dark of trees, rocks and desert plants. I was amazed at the pics that came out!! They were a little blurry, but I wasn't using a tripod either. It was fun just taking pictures and then looking at the display to see what was there when the flash went off!

I'd love to see the pictures you have when you get back!! I'm working to find webspace and links to post some of mine.

Have a safe and wonderful vacation! :)

if you go to fotopic.net you can sign up for free and post your pictures there. I recently signed up! then you can link your photos to this site when you want to show someone a photo. Thank you for your response. I have shot some nice pictures in Landscape Mode, i will definitely try to the night mode too!! Thank you for your suggestion!

and Bruce W - thank you also for your suggestions!

Beth,

My C1 setting is for quick macro shots:
Av,Raw,F8,MF set on 6"

Still trying to decide what C2 will be best for :)

He has created a custom preset for parties and other situations where he can't rely on or wait for the G3's autofocus. See

Seems interesting

I have set C1 up according to the above link. It converts the G3 into a point and shoot and works well.

I have set C2 up with both contrast and sharpness increased. This gives slightly sharper pictures than the Canon default. You have to compare the results and see where to use the sharper settings. For me it does not improve the photo in all cases.

Thanks for posting a interesting topic - this is the type of topic that one would hope to see more of on this type of forum !!!!!

I use C1 for an adpated version of the hyperfocal/manual focus setting referred to several times above, with C2 set up for macro work. I have spot metering set up for this too, so I can meter from the crucial part of the picture.
