Welcome, all. Get out there and explore the forum. Don't forget to read the stickies at the tops of most sections (there's a lot of great information there). Take time to read te forum rules, ask questions, learn and have fun. And above all, get out and shoot and share your images. Practice makes perfect!

I have always had a camera of some sort for as long as I can remember, starting with 126 pocket instamatic and progressing to an SLR when I was a teenager, but then I guess I got a bit lazy as other things in life took over and was quite content with a point and click camera.

However recently I realised that point and click is limited, I purchased an EOS40D last year with the bundled EFS17-85mm my dad, who is an extremely accomplished armature photographer, gave me a Canon EF75-300mm and I can borrow others as I need.

I am now relearning how to take photos again with an SLR bit like riding a bike you never forget, its just you are a bit wobbly at first.

Hey everyone my name is Geoff and I just joined a couple of days ago. I'm an overhead crane operator for a steel mill in NW Indiana. I've been doing photography for about a year now and hoping I can improve my skills with the help of this site. I've posted a few photos in some of the forums so please feel free to check them out and give some opinions.

First off Hello to everyone here (or at least those who are reading the intro forum).

My name's Mike. I live in the Chicago suburbs. I'm a mechanical engineer. I've got very little photography experience, and most of it has been with a POS P+S. :o

My other hobbies include motorcycles (I've got 5), woodworking, audio, and basically anything I can DIY.

Looking to learn a lot from everyone here, and hopefully be able to shoot some nice photos.

Howdy folks! I'm a noob here but I've been a troll for sometime now. :p

I'm a DBA/IT Consultant full-time and a Hosting/Web Designer part-time. I started getting into photography about 7 months ago. I started with an XTi kit but like everyone else I started to want more!

I live in Houston and if anyone wants to hook up give me a PM.

Hi.

I'll just copypaste my introduction as I posted it in the POTN Lounge (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=7275471#post7275471) first because I didn't find this thread.

I'm 21 years old, from Norway and has just recently taken up photography as a serious hobby, although I have been fascinated by this media for as long as I can remember.
I go to school five days a week and work a little on the side. In my free time I take pictures, work with them in photoshop, and post a few of them on my brand new blog(See my signature).

My camera is a Canon G7 Powershot, which I'm still in the process of learning how to use properly. Up until now all I've had to work with has been cheap digital cameras and my cellphone camera.

The types of pictures I like the most and will thus strive to learn how to do are portraits, pictures with strong "moods", black and white and pictures with very strong and clear colors.

I think that is all I have to say for now. I look forward to learn from you guys and hopefully I will be able to contribute a little too.

Hey everyone, I'm Kelcey if you hadn't already guessed!
I'm a junior in high school and I'm currently frustrated in my Digital Photography I class. Everything we're talking about I know already, but hey, it's an easy A ;)
I was interested in photography ever since I played with a toy camera my grandpa gave me when I was 5. I was very sad when I learned the camera wouldn't actually record the pictures. My grandma got me a barbie film camera for my 8th birthday and I wanted to take pictures of animals, so I took pictures of Animal Planet on TV
My dad later bought me an Argus C3 from a garage sale a year later, and I still have it to this day. Haven't used it, but it's nice to have.
After a few years my parents did...well bad stuff. My dad eventually died from it back in 2006. Now I live with a foster family, but I've known them since the 3rd grade so it's like living with real family.
It was my first year living with them when I rediscovered photography one day at the zoo. My foster mom let me borrow the camera to take pictures of the puffins, and from that day on I've loved photography.
I've gone through a little Kodak Easyshare, Canon Powershot S80, a Canon G9 that is owned by my school, and I just bought my very first dSLR, Canon Rebel XSi, yesterday on Amazon that should be at my house by the 11th.
So yupp, I'm very laidback, to the point where my foster mom says it's a bad thing. My friends say I should be a comedian, and I was seriously thinking about it, but when I'm infront of a large group of people I sound like I'm about to cry

That's about all I can think of for now :p

Welcome Kelcey!

I quite enjoyed reading your introduction, and laughed when you said "I wanted to take pictures of animals, so I took pictures of Animal Planet on TV"!!! Hilarious :)

Congrats on the XSi (you'll love it) and look forward to seeing your work.

TTYL, Suzanne.

Hello everyone my name is Rich and I joined this week when someone on another forum I'm on led me here. I'm 24 and in the Army, currently living in San Antonio, TX. I guess I had kinda always been into photography, but I didn't really invest in a good camera till last year when I picked up my XSi. So far I'm really happy with it and I've learned quite a bit about it and how to use it since when I first bought it.

For equipment, right now I have the 18-55mm IS kit lens and the 28-135mm IS USM lens I picked up a couple of weeks ago as well as a Canon backpack, UV/polarizing filters, SanDisk 4GB cards and a tripod. Next on my list is the 100mm f/2.8 macro lens. Well, below are a few photos I've taken so far.

This one was taken in December in Vegas with the kit lens. Post processing on this one was a bit of sharpening and brightening the colors just a bit.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3307/3264487937_e22957471a_b.jpg

And this one was with the 28-135. It looks a little blurry to me and I'm pretty sure its due to me moving during the exposure. No PP done on this one.

Hello guys, my name is Chris.

I joined this forum because I just ordered my new XSI/450d.

I bought a 350d 2 years ago for a photography class and wanted to make photography my hobby. Well I went on a trip to Europe and it got stolen in my hostel. So now I went into the market for a replacement. I wanted to upgrade, but I couldn't afford the 40d.

After much deliberation between the Sony Alpha a350 and the Xsi I just went for the Canon. It is due to be delivered in the next few days. If you would like to check out some of my previous work you can visit my Deviantart or Flickr. (Both in my sig)

Thanks for reading, I hope to get much better.

Hi all

My name is Mike Salway, and I'm an amateur photographer and my main passion is Astronomy and Astrophotography.

I've got a personal blog site and image gallery at MikeSalway.com.au (http://www.mikesalway.com.au) which I try and post to at least 3 times a week, and my astronomy site is IceInSpace (http://www.iceinspace.com.au) which has grown to be the largest astronomy community in the southern hemisphere.

I look forward to contributing here, getting advice and offering it where I can, and getting to know some of you.

Thanks!

My name is Brad, I'm 25, I'm a Graphic Designer for Quiksilver (surf company) in Southern California. I found this forum while researching what Camera to buy to get the best shots I could of my 1 year old, that's just about running around the house now.

I've never been deeply into photography, but alway wanted to be. And my prior attempt/purchase failed pretty rapidly, cause I surpassed the camera (a Sony V3...kinda like a Canon G5 I think) within a few days of having it...and it's held me back since. With it, however, I've taken a friends engagement photos, and was commissioned for my sister's co-worker's engagement photos a little over a month ago. Then just a couple weeks ago, I was asked if I could assist on a wedding as a second photographer. So...with my 1 year old, and seeming to get these random jobs, I figured I should upgrade from that, and went for broke (broke for me anyways).

I just received my new 50D. I know I've got a lot to learn, but at least I know that it won't be my equipment holding me back anymore. I'm really looking forward to when I can afford the 10-22, cause I've always been a sucker for the wide stuff.

I've had a lot of experience with photography, but nothing extreme. My dad was an amature photographer, and I used his old film Minolta (from I think about 1972) for quite a while.

Well, anyways, enough of my hello. Hope to get to know a bunch of you.

Hello!

My name is Jon and I'm an auto mechanic in west central Canada. I've been into photography for a big chunk of my life, first on 35mm film with an old Ricoh XR-2s, then into digital with a couple of point and shoot cameras and now with a 40D and an SX100 as my toys.

I'm an amateur astronomer as well and my 40D spends a lot of time one the back of my Celestron C6S-GT telescope. Just think of it as a 1500mm telephoto lens. :D

Looking forward to learning from the other shutterbugs on these forums.

My name is Kevin, and I live in the NW Burbs of Chicago. I'm 28 and have decided that I don't have enough expensive hobbies, so, I'd take up photography. Although the sarcasm doesn't translate well over the net, if you don't know me, my other hobbies include travel, season ticket holder for sporting events, and cars. I figured photography would make the others enjoyable, since I can document them however I choose.

Currently, I am in the market for an entry SLR camera....either an XT or XTI. I'd like to learn how to shoot and then see if I'm ok with that level or want to expand to more. I have several friends that are really into photography, so, I know I have the resources to learn a lot of information, but I figured this site would allow me to meet a variety of people with different tastes...since most of the guys I know like shooting our cars! Here are some pictures that were taken of my car last week when we had a nice day to go out.

Hey guys,

I am Julia and I am 30 years old. I live in Frankfurt, Germany and work for an Investment Bank.

I always liked photography, my first camera was an HP 850. I loved her so much, she was big, had a great zoom and we travelled a lot together. She took 4 AA batteries and those lasted for roughly 3 hours. lol She took great pics though, a bit too blue-ish, but I took some great pics, especially in Australia.

One of the pics with HP 850, Uluru, Aus

HP850 and I stayed together for 2 years, then her screen went pink and sadly our friendship was terminated.

Then some repair dude in Melbourne tricked me into buying a Kyocera 3mp camera. ****ty little thing.

Never warmed up to her. Still kicking myself for spending $150 on it.

Here is one of her shots. Three Sisters, Katoomba, Aus

Back then I didn't even know the term "SLR" or "DSLR". I thought all that mattered with a digital camera was that it had a lot of pixels.

People kept on telling me that the photos I took were great, that I had an eye for it. To me it was more of a documentation thing - been there, did this and that's what it looked like.

Then in 07 I finally got a better camera, a Lumix FZ8. I still did not know about SLRs. Shame really. I started walking around with the camera all the time and started taking photos of food, flowers and just random things I saw. Loved it.

At some point I realised, that I needed, wanted an SLR. A friend had a Nikon D40 and I loved the click click sound. I waited and waited, could just not push myself to buy one, since I was scared of the manual use. When the 450D came out, I knew which one to get.

Since then I have been joined the DSLR fun. Can't say my pics have improved, but I am getting there. Now thinking about buying an additional lens and taking a portrait course as well as a food photography course next month.

Hi. My name is Julio and I am 31. I work in Information Technology, and outside of that I love writing. I recently decided to take up photography as a hobby, since I had a nagging interest in it for a while. My first camera to get my feet wet was a Fujifilm Finepix J10, but I just purchased a Canon PowerShot A590IS because I wanted more manual control. I've been avoiding the Auto modes because I want to learn as much as possible about taking photos with the manual settings, tweaking and having control. The A590IS, for the price, was just that camera (though I was drooling over the SX110IS). I have found photography to be very relaxing and I love doing it. I hope to learn a lot from this forum, and am glad to be here.

I'm still a total newbie to all of this, so my pictures may be crap, but I thought I'd share a few (since some others are ;)). These were all taken with my old J10 (now passed down to my wife).

hey all! I'm a.k and have just joined this forum!
I'm a highschool student and a VERY new photographer from Michigan, USA. I just got my first DLSR(canon rebel xsi) a week ago, and just took my first "real" photographs yesterday.(and often wondered why i was out there in the cold...)
Though my mind never seems to wander to far from nature photography, i also enjoy reading, snowboarding, being outside(when its not freezing out. lol.) and just hanging with friends. lol.
July 2008 was when i really wanted to get "deep" into nature photography, and have slowly learned on a Panosonic point and shoot. Now that i have my "real" camera, i'm thrilled about learning even more about this passion of mine.
I look forward about what i'll learn from everyone here!
Blessings,
a.k
(here's one of my favorite shots...though taken with a P&S)

Hi all,
I'm Mark i've been visiting to gain information as a viewer only (on my phone) for a while now but as i've just sorted my home internet i thought it was about time i register.. I've only been a dslr user for 2 years but have learned so much and still want to learn so much more.

Main interests are people and wildlife.. i love the challenge of childrens portraiture and the satisfaction of getting it right but also the tranquility of just observing wildlife and capturing unusual images of animals that you don't get too close too everyday.

Anyway enough rambling from me i hope to speak to as many of you on here as i can and ultimately carry on learning and feeding my dare i say it 'addiction'.

Regards,
Mark.

(Oh and i'm in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, U.K - i forgot that part).

I'm not good with introductions but will try my best. My name is Melissa, I'm 27 and from Long Island. I'm a dancer, it's all I've ever wanted to do, the moment I was able to walk I was told I'd come alive when music came on, and I haven't stopped since. I have a short attention span and always have to keep myself busy otherwise I'd go insane. During the day I work in an office (blah) and at night I teach dance at two local dance studios.

I'm very new to the Digital SLR world having only gotten my first SLR 2 months ago, but I'm loving it. I'd definitely consider myself a beginner, I'm only now learning how to correctly use a camera and Photoshop and when you're starting from a blank canvas (my brain) it's alot to take it. I'm trying to obtain as much information as possible about everything SLR and PS, I'm continuously reading books and tutorials to grasp basic concepts that to most of you is second nature. I'm a perfectionist and get very frustrated at times feeling that I'm very behind in experience and knowledge compared to where I should be at my age but I guess everyone has to start somewhere :-)

I'm also still trying to find my niche, but I'm drawn to photographing people mostly.

That seems to be enough about me...for now. I'll continue reading about everyone else!

hey POTN,

my name's Andrew and i just recently started off learning what the world of photography has in store for me...i've been wanting to learn for a few years, but being in the military hasn't given me alot of times when i could just pick it up. That is until now...my dad's been into photography for about 22 years now so i try to get a few things from him every now and then but we live half way around the world from each other so with the time difference i been looking on here for help and ideas...my weapons of choice for now are:

40D GRIPPED
70-200 F/4L(looking to sell/trade)
50 1.4
430ex

the prime stays on the camera 95% of the time hence wanting to get rid of the 70-200...here's a couple pics i've taken...c/c is welcome...

Hi there.

I guess here is as good as any place to say my first hello. I'm Matthew, from sunny Barnet [North London/Herts]. I purchased a Canon 450D last August, mostly through limitations of my 'P&S' Pentax. This week I purchased a 50mm f/1.8 and a 70-200 f/4 to join my 18-55 IS lens. I enjoy people photography as well as car shows, track days...anything with cars really. I've a lot to learn, my camera rarely strays to 'M' model but I'm keen. I do not wish to be a professional photographer - just to better what I'm able to do.

I don't really know anyone who's into photography, so would be keen to come along to a few shooting meets. Lot's of knowledge and skill on this forum - hopefully I can gain from it. :)

Hello. My name is Anthony and I am 17. I'm a senior in highshool and i am an automotive enthusiast. I just recently decided to take up photography as a hobby i found it very fun taking photographs of my car. Learning a lot about framing and composition in my digital photography elective last semester, i feel that my skills have improved greatly compared to how they were earlier last year. My first camera was a Sony DSC-W30, i believe, but I just purchased a Canon XTi last september because I wanted more manual control. I have a 430EX flash and 3 lenses so far, the Canon 18-55 IS, the Canon 55-250 IS, and the Canon 50mm 1.8. I take alot of automotive, school and sports photographs. As i am on my schools tennis team, im always bringing my camera equipment with me to take photographs for my schools yearbook staff. Lately ive been trying to learn the best settings for club shoots as one of my friends has asked me to be a club photographer for their DJ group over the summer. I hope to learn a lot from this forum, and am glad to be here.
Here are some recent pictures ive taken and edited:

Well, I've been lurking in the shadows long enough, so had better introduce myself.

My name is Paul and I'm a soon to be 40, Transport Planner, living in Mansfield, UK.

I've been playing with point and shoots and baby SLR point and shoots for a while, with the kids and holidays but an impending holiday and subsequent move, to New Zealand, meant I had to get a proper camera to take advantage of the stunning scenery the country has.

I haven't used SLR's in a long time (nearly 20 years!), so will be posting all sorts of questions until the memories start flooding back.

I now have a EOS 350D with the kit 18 - 55 and a Sigma 28 - 300, a Vanguard tripod, vivitar flash and both CS4 and Photomatix on the laptop. Plus the point and shoot Minolta Z1 and Sony Cyber Shot. All kept tidy in a cheap as chips back pack(for now)

On the wish list is a 100mm Macro lens, (getting tubes for now) 500 or 1000mm zoom and eventually, a 5D body......but not until the wife's done spending!!

Hello everyone

Managed to find the introductions post after searching for it for about a week.

Anyway I'm Shazza, 34 from Milton keynes, UK.

Recently bought my first DSLR a Canon 40d and at the moment am still learning how to use it but am enjoying getting out there and seeing what it can do. Before that I just used an Ixus 80 to shoot but soon got bored with it's limitations so when I was offered a great second hand deal on the 40d I couldn't resist.

At the moment I am taking pictures of anything and everything and I don't have a particular niche.

Am looking forward to hopefully learning some new things from other members on this forum and sharing pictures with you all.

I don’t know Abcd of photography but I always like to take different pics from my mobile. I also run a Fashion photographers site.
Aside from this, I am running a web development company from last 4 years and developed many custom and wordpress sites.
Hope I will see some extra ordinary pics here of photography gurus and get useful tips on photography.

Hello POTN!

I'm new to the photog/DSLR world and was referred to this forum by a forum member of an auto detailing forum. I used to own a Sony DSC-N1 but my girlfriend just bought me a 450D body and my sister gave me her spare 18-55mm kit lens. I'm from the Bay Area as well.

I've been doing a lot of reading in books, magazines and online forums and boy is there a ton of information. The one book that has helped me the most has been the book called Digital Photography (The Practical Illustrated Encyclopedia Of) by Steve Luck. It has really helped me understand the basics of shutter speed, aperture, ISO and many more.

Now I'm in my quest to find a suitable gear bag, something preferably small since I don't plan on making any future purchase of gear anytime soon (well, maybe a 50 1.8 since it's cheap). Do any of you folks have any good recommendations? I was reading through the more recent pages of the Show me your camera bag (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=36952&page=142) thread and it seems a lot of folks like the Crumpler brand, among many others (Lowepro, Tamrac, Domke, Kata, etc.). So what would fit me best for a body, the kit lens and possibly a 50 1.8?

I'm thinking of also getting a tripod but I'm going to hold off on that for a while and work with my cheap tripod for now to get by. I'm also open to hearing opinions on tripods as well but I've heard the Bogen/Manfrotto is one of the better brands to go with.

Thank you all in advance! I will definitely enjoy my stay here, hehe.

Hey everyone, i'm Greg and I just find this site last night by mistake. I was actually searching for something else that was totally not even related to photography. I have been a long time Photography fanatic and I am a Canon Fan boy if you want to call it that. Im 29 and currently in the Airforce as a F-16 Crew Chief (Jet Mechanic) and I like to do photography in my spare time. I am still learning all of the ins and outs of everything in the photography world, I would still consider myself a noob lol. I mainly shoot things such as my car and other cars, my jet at work and a couple of nature & environment pics. I have been recently trying to broaden my photography skills into other areas and find myself asking noob questions :( Anyways, I used to have a Canon Digital Rebel XT since day one up until the first of March when I sold it to a co-worker. I now have a New Canon 50D w/ the EF 28-135mm IS USM Kit Lens and look forward to A LOT of tech support from all of you lol.

Hello, My name is Patrick. I'm a junior at Purdue in physics. I just ordered my first DSLR very recently (Canon Rebel XS with a 18-55m IS lens). I enjoy taking pictures of skylines, buildings (both during the day and at night), and also nature scenery shots. Occasionally I take pictures of airplanes and airports. To this day most of my photography has been done on a Point and Shoot, and I'm really excited to become better with my DSLR.

huh. been a member here for 4 months now, and never saw this thread..... :)

name's Jeremie and i'm a 35yo father of two, happily married, working as an engineer. been enjoying photography since i bought my first elph2 advantix camera. lol i just recently stepped up to a rebel xsi (last september), my first venture into the dslr realm. so far, loving it, but wishing i had more time free to enjoy it. my interests in photography really started taking hold when i began experimenting more with my canon A610 in manual mode earlier last summer, and learning how changing aperture and shutter speed affected my pics (soon after i ordered a copy of "understanding exposures"). currently debating whether or not i should try and sell my xsi to a co-worker who's looking to get into more serious photography so i can get a 40D......

Hey folks!

My name is Al and live in London, ON, Canada. I've been into photography off and on since I was in the photography club in high school (a long, long time ago).

Anyway, my wife is turning 50 this month and I bought her a Canon G10 camera. This was to be her camera, and not one that our son or I would mess around with. It really bugs her when we start playing with settings and not putting things back the way they were... So, I looked around and picked up a Canon PowerShot S3 IS camera from a pawn shop for $59! It appears to be in very good condition and everything appears to work on it. I figured for $59, I couldn't go wrong! The price was for the camera only. It didn't come with any accessories other than the lens cap, strap and a 2 GByte SD card.

I am going to see if my wife wants to sign up for some lessons and start going around to some local spots and take some pictures.

Talk to you later...
Al

Greetings POTN,
Wow, this forum is massive compared to other forums I have joined. Came here after the previous Canon forum became distinct. I am from Manchester, England and have had a camera in my hands practically all my life 40odd years, starting with a Kodak box brownie, Olympus Trip and upgrading to the Pentax system during a trip across the USA. Decided to change systems to EOS when the superb 600 was introduced and never looked back. Swapped to digital with the 10D and since purchased the 5D and 30D.
My main interests are travel, footie (I'm an avid Manchester United fan) and shoot the odd wedding. Looking forward to sharing comments with you all soon.

Dave.

Hello to all. My name is John, I live in Southern California. I was really into photography for about 15 years. Shooting 35mm Canon A1's with a multitude of lenses. I also shot with a Bronica ETR, a Yashica Twin lens and also 4x5 large fomat. I do have a dark room in my home that hasn't seen any use in 7 years. After losing my wife to a brain tumor, I kind of lost interest in my creative endeavors.
Now I find myself wanting to return to photography and so I purchased a Canon 1000d (Rebel XS)
I'm trying to learn the digital termanology as well as the mechanics of the piece. Added to that, it seems I must learn Photoshop as well. I'm glad that I found this forum in hopes of learning more about my Canon camera. I like to shoot street scenes, landscapes and some informal portraits. I appreciate this platform for information and assistance.
I also would appreciate any information on an "easy" way to learn Photoshop if there is such a thing as easy. Be well all and shoot on.

Hi everyone. I'm in Northern NJ, and love to travel.
I found this site after looking for some tips on Canon cameras. Had an Advantix Elph for a few years, and then a Sony CyberShot DSC-S75 for the last 8 years. I decided to treat myself to an SX10 IS for my birthday, which is next week.
I did all the research on the camera I wanted for the last couple of months, and this board has helped me. Knowing I didn't want a DSLR, I decided the SX10 would be the best choice for me, as I was interested in a very good point-and-shoot that had zoom.
I'm primarily interested in taking scenery shots and night shots, where I can put them on the web for some really nice desktop wallpaper, to share with others.

I also would appreciate any information on an "easy" way to learn Photoshop if there is such a thing as easy. Be well all and shoot on.

John, one of the best ways to learn is to get a basic and/or intermediate dvd course and just follow along with the material presented. You'll find that it's nice to be able to pause and play and you can always replay portions of lessons as need be. A good DVD set to try out would be one selections offered from Total Training (http://www.totaltraining.com/prod/adobe/photoshop.asp), I have used some of their stuff (although for flash and web design) and I think they do a great job.

Another source obviously would be websites that offer free tutorials, even youtube can be useful. There are also many resources available on Adobe's websites and forums. However, I find that the structured format of the DVD is better not to mention that the quality of the videos are generally superior to most videos available for free on the web.

Good Luck.

Hi everyone, I'm Andrew. I live in Alberta, Canada, but I am originally from the east coast of Canada, Nova Scotia to be exact. I just recently got into photography, I bought a Canon 450d with the plan of documenting my time out west and it has surpassed all of my expectations. The focus of my shooting so far has been mostly landscape and macro, but with summer coming up I am hoping to add some baseball games, some outdoor portraits and maybe even a duck or two to the list. I've been a lurker for a while and love all the info this forum has, so I figured it was time to sign up and make some posts of my own.

Hello all! I am so excited to join this forum. My husband and I are avid hobby photographers and after a lot of encouragement from friends and family, we're 'biting the bullet' and creating a part-time portrait and wedding photography business. I have soooo many questions and we still have a lot to learn as we continue building up our portfolio. We currently have a Canon 40D, EF 28-135mm lens, EF 50mm lens, EF 70-300mm IS USM, Canon 480EX II Speed flash. With some of the money from our first client, we plan to invest in a studio lighting/backdrop kit.

Hello all! I am a new enthusiast to digital photography. I took two years of film photography in high school, but that was 7 years ago. My first digital camera was a Canon PowerShot S2 but I recently in Feb upgraded to a Rebel XS. I love photography and art in general as I do draw and paint as well.

I joined this community to hopefully get some tips. Mainly I want to know how is it some photos I've seen like on Flickr for instance, seem to be so vibrant in color? Is this due to post processing? Because I swear some of the colors and contrast I've seen in photos certainly do not exist in real life lol, or maybe I just need to get some new eyes. I have some shots right now I took at a relative's wedding but I want them to look even nicer than they already do. Any tips?

Hey everyone,

My name is Ben, everyone calls me ozzy. Im currently a sophomore at the University of Tennessee ( will be a junior after my final tomorrow). I am a logistics major. I have been into photography most of my life but finally got into it my last semester by taking a class. I will be doing my first paying photoshoot this weekend and then ill be setting up a website. I will start shooting paintball tournaments as soon as I get enough money for a 70-200 2.8L. I quit playing the sport in october due to school and money but I cant leave the sport. I played tournament paintball and was on a good sponsored team when I quit, and I miss it but photography has filled that emptyness.

Im sure I will be on here a lot more once my school calms down and will probably annoy everyone with all of my questions.

There are some great pictures on here and im exited to join!

I joined the forum about a week ago, after finding something on here via google, and I really liked the site, especially the meetups, and hopefully I can go to one soon.

I got into photography a few years ago, but I really got pushed into the field after I took some 35mm film classes in my school with my rebel K2 (I even have the keys to the dark room!).

This christmas, I got my 5D as a christmas present from my uncle (who replaced the 5D with a 1D Mark III [I forgot if its a 1Ds or a 1D...]), best christmas present ever!

And I've been taking pics since.

Hi. I signed up here a while ago but have been too busy to join in lately. I'm Norma and I've been here in sunny Tampa for 9 years! Retired early and moved with hubby who has his own direct marketing company and works from home.

I started out on the PET site about 4 years ago with a Fuji and progressed to a Rebel XT. Now I have a 40D and love it! Haven't taken any photo classes yet. Would like to but all my learning has been self taught. I like taking landscape and wildlife images and me and a few other gals in the area go on lots of "road trips" just to practice. Hoping we can find some others in the area to get together with.

Hey every1...I'm 21 and a total newbie when it comes to photography...I plan on buying a camera and getting started sometime soon...Although people would say I'm starting late in the whole process...I'm definitely willing to put in the work and the effort to 'make up for lost time'...I came to these forums in hopes I can get some help on getting started.. so hopefully I can learn all I need to know and then some from the people on the boards:)

Hi all, newbie here. Just upgraded from my G9 today (which died :( ) to a 500D. Absolutely love it and can't wait to get out there this weekend to take some proper snaps as I've snapped the interior of my house to death now!

This is my first photography forum, looks like an excellent read to so am hoping to come as active as possible and hopefully get some really good advice.

Hi! I am Dan. I have been shooting with Canon since the days of the AE-1P. I started out with mostly family type pics but, with the kids growing up andmoving on, I am now really into photography as a hobbist. I shoot with a 50D and have a wide range of gear. I just joined the forum today and am enjoying the heck out of it!

Hey, I'm not-so-new here but never saw this thread until now so I'm adding my .02 cents...

I'm Jason, and I'm a mailman (no, I do not know where your missing letter is, nor can you request to stop junk mail...), been one for over 24 years. I live and work in L.A. county, California.

Got my first, and only, slr back in '79...a Pentax. I enjoyed the Pentax, but never seriously grew with it.

Add many years, lots of cheap 35mm cameras and later digital P&S and a motorcycle accident, I decided to rekindle the SLR flame, as in DSLR. Piked up my 40D in November 2007, and I've been 'going to town' ever since.

I really enjoy photography, and it's a heck of a lot more fun than collecting stamps...I hate stamps. Capturing the moment has such a fullfilling satisfaction to it, I love it.

So, if you're out and about in your day in my neck of the woods and see a mailman taking pics with his trusty 1D, stop and say hello...and by all means have your picture taken.

Regards

Jason C

Hi folks, my name is Graham and I'm from Glasgow, Scotland. I'm mainly a Nikon shooter:eyes, but I had a G9 for a year or so (and a nice wee mint/boxed 1971 Canonet) and have recently replaced it with a G10 so I hope I'm welcome as a visitor from the "dark side"

Anyway, here's a pic of my wee G10, just to prove it exists

Not sure why it's taken me this long to find this forum since I've been using Canon products for 3 years now. I sure like what I see here. What a community with oodles of information.

My name is Joe, I'm 50, live in West Marin (CA) and have been involved in photography since 1996, a relative newcomer for sure. I have experience in LF, MF, and 35mm. I enjoy most landscapes, abstract and impressionist imagery, portraits, anything really that captures imagination and character.

My kit today features a 5D MKII and 35L, 85LII, 135L.

Hi - you're from Gallagher county i see:)

What gear do you own Dave - ?

I have the 5D, 30D and a glut of lenses which most of them are redundant. My 70-200L f.2.8 attached to the 30D and likewise my 24-70L f.2.8 to the 5D are the only lenses I seem to use the most.

Its a shock to go from Pentax gear to Canon - I had about 9 lenses + (was at least 9 - memory fade ) + a genuine grip/extra battery, and with selling off everything, i could afford a only a body and 2 lenses

Ok, here goes...

Been into photography for a very short amount of time really - bought a 300D back in 2004, bundled with the kit lens and then shortly after bought the 75-300mm IS for doing motorsport shots. Started to branch out a lot more (and understand photography more) when I traded up to my current 40D in May of 2008 and got the 50mm F1.4 to go along with it. Cue lots of pictures of the cat :p

At the same time I got a Metz flash gun and started to learn about shooting people in low light conditions using the flash to bounce off of other things and give a much nicer light. More recently I've bought the lovely EF-S 10-22mm and am using that mainly for landscapes.

I mainly still shoot motorsport but enjoy doing long exposures (of all sorts) and landscapes.

Hi! Completely new to everything, picking up new stuff about my Canon eos xs (1000d) every day shooting stuff.I have the most basic stuff, debating whether i should get a fish eye lens now or just procrastinate. I'm a college student in San Francisco. Haven't shot a single frame of the city yet because i'm in Oregon right now. Got some good shots of stray cats though! I'll post them as soon as i upload them on my laptop. I love shooting people and animals mainly. I don't have a tripod yet so i haven't done night photos.

I joined to learn some tips and skills and i find myself overwhelmed with how amazing people are here!

Now I need to be honest I turned on a diffrent system and I am pretty satisfied with it. However I will never forget the years I have spent with Canon and the great personal and professional growth due to it :)
I have joined the forum to keep in touch with the real users of Canon and their tips as well.

Hello all!

My first real experience with photography was during a college class (intro to B&W photo), and ever since then I've been dabbling in it. Not a pro by any means, but when I've got some free time - esp. on vacations - I love to get out the camera and explore. I now work in marketing, and I'm from Boston but currently live in the DC metro area.
Also at the moment I have been working with Adobe on the Creative Suite 4 Student Editions, so if you've got any questions about the software, definitely feel free to ask!

Hello, my name is Jessica and I am happily married to Justin and we have two wonderful children. I am a Stay at Home Mom to our kids and from being a Mom, I have developed a love for photography. It started with my compact camera and then I REALLY got bitten by the photography bug when my husband bought me my Rebel.

I have had people to figure out that I have this photography hobby via various ways...I haven't even advertised my services and at this point (although I may later) I am not charging for my services. I have several people ask me to take photos for them...including taking photos of softball teams, cap and gown photos, and my best is on location and outdoor photos of individuals and families.

So now, I have progressed forward and am taking some super shots along the way...capturing every moment that I can. Thus, Jessica's Lil Moments has been born! You can see my work at http://jessicaslilmoments.blogspot.com and I love for others to view my work and see what I can do so you are welcome to follow my blog and keep up with my various projects.

Thanks and remember, every moment should be cherished, both big and small! :)

My name is John and I love photography for many years. When I was a kid in the '60s, I used a Kodak Brownie with built-in flash. It used the blue-dot flash bulbs. In high school and early college I used a Kodak Instamatic camera. A technique I learned with that camera was if I ran out of flash cubes, I just kept the cube in the socket and the camera shutter seemed to slowdown, then I could at least get some kind of shot.

Then my brother introduced me to 35mm and the Canon FTb, black body. What a great camera. I bought some b&W darkroom equipment and took a mixture of black and white as well as color photos. I liked Kodachrome 25 the best for color.

Then Irene and I had kids....

After they left the nest, my interest in photography perked again. I considered digital just after Christmas, but most of the good cameras were out of stock. So I purchased a Canon Rebel 2000 film camera. And it blew my FTb away. I love the Rebel 2000.

The very next Christmas, my wife surprises me with a Canon S50 digital camera. I was luke warm over the present. It took consistently over-exposed flash pictures. I almost took it back until a newgroup reply pointed out that problem and fix. In the same thread, the responder mentioned taking over 5,000 photos with his camera. Huh? I had no concept of that many photos. I took over 6,000 my first year, wore-out the camera, sent it in to Canon who subsequently screwed up the "repair" and I ended up with an S80.

The S80 was ok until I attempted photographing race cars at Road America, at Elkart Lake, Wisconsin. Great shots in the paddock, suck shots on the track.

I now own a Canon 40D.....
and a new pc with two, 1 terrabyte drives (one for pictures and programs, one drive for backup).

I wish everyone success in their digital photography.

Hi,
I'm Joe, I live and work in Kyoto Japan, and I stumbled across POTN recently. I'm very much interested in improving and learning my photography (Not so much in "gear"), and this seems like an excellent forum.

I've been shooting digitally for nearly 12 years - and shooting seriously for less. I've spent much time wandering around the forums on the net, and have been mostly active over at DPreview - but they are certainly more gear oriented than I am.

That being said, I shoot primarily with Nikon gear, and don't have any canon gear (except oddly enough my photo backpack). Hopefully that isn't going to be a problem. (hey, much of my family uses Canon) (Dislclaimer: I didn't come here to start anything or to get into equipment wars)

Nice to meet you all! I hope I will learn alot here.

Joe, greetings to a Nikon user -- there are numerous ones here. This is a friendly forum, though you will encounter some friendly "Noinker" banter. Spend some time and enjoy the forum, and especially spend time in the threads that are more about photography and less about being gear-centric!

Hello. My name is Nick if it wasn't obvious enough already. I am 23 years old from the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I was born in St. Louis and was raised in Nashville where I really discovered my ecleptic lifestyle and love for anything artistic and creative.

I joined in U.S. Navy in 2006 and went straight from boot camp to the Ceremonial Guard where, after two years, was elected as the event photographer for many of the ceremonies that the Guardsmen performed. My first DSLR was a Canon EOS 20D and I absolutely fell in love with it. The command never approved for a new camera although I wanted one terribly due to the fact that the screen on the 20D is pointlessly small. Since the Ceremonial Guard, I have been in love with photography and decided it was my calling. Now I am in Guantanamo Bay and I have had to put my hobby at ease due to the photo restrictions on the base. I have a 40D waiting for me back home that I cannot wait to take out and get some good shots with.

I plan on attending college full-time for commercial digital photography and hopefully land a job with a nature and wildlife society such as National Geographic. I am not letting anything get in my way.

Hi, I'm an engineer in Michigan, USA and have been interested in photography for a long time. Got my first own non-disposable camera in 2001-ish, a Kodak DC-215. 1MP, viewscreen, 2x zoom, 4AA, 1MB CF card, heady stuff. It was said to have the best color in it's class... used it on trips to Maine, Germany, and Italy. I went mostly Canon from there. For a hike in Washington, I bought an A70 after agonizing over the S400. I next got an S1 IS and fell in love with IS and mega zoom. I got an S400 a couple of years later. Still have the S400, an S410, SD 200, SD800 (main compact), S3 IS (main camera for vacations), a Casio EX-P505 (for video capability), and got a D30 a couple of years ago to check out SLR handling and capability. I'm now looking to upgrade to a 350D, 20D, or 1000D (likely 20D) and/or G11 or S90 for a faster, low light camera.

I was recently asked to shoot a small charity event and found my cameras limiting (early morning no light, slow focus, high ISO grainyness) as well as my composition skills. I tend to photograph people more like a newspaper journalist than capture the moment and create a photograph with impact or at least interest. I'm better at what I started doing, taking landscape and vacation scene photos.

Hi - I am retired military and a retired magistrate. I started photography in the early 1970's shooting black and white with a Nikon FM. About two years ago, I decided to get into DSLR and purchased a Pentax K200. I am now mentally ready to move up in capability and have been trying to figure out which plateform to go with - Nikon or Canon. I have decided to go with Canon because of the vast selection of lenses. Currently, I am ready to pull the trigger on a 50D and either a EF-S 24-70L or 24-105L. I like to photograph family events and outdoor scenes. I have a new Grandson in upstate New York and he is currently the focus of my attention. My hobbies are photography and sailing 17th century ships. I look forward to soaking up as much knowledge from vast amount of information and improving my skills.

I have been doing a lot of research lately and i have cut down my choices between the Rebel XS and XSi. I cannot decide between the 2 of them. I love cars so this camera will mostly be used on cars. Hopefully the DSLR guru's here can help me decide and acquire the skills to be a photographer.:D

Hey POTN!

I'm Logan, a 15 year-old amateur photographer from Canada. My dad has always been a great photographer, so I grew up looking at his photos and watching him shoot. When I was 11, he needed a new camera for his office, but it's now mostly mine ;) (It's a Canon EOS 350D - the Rebel XT - still with the cr*ppy 18-55mm zoom lens). I only recently really got back into photography when I found Flickr and also because my sister is now using it for her photography course, so I want to challenge myself to take better photos (than her).

For the past year I've been blogging, but never about anything that truly satisfied me. Recently, I had the idea to set up a personal blog where I could write about anything, post up my photos, and showcase my music.

I'm really keen on getting better at photography, and that's why I'm on here. Right now, I'm experimenting with Aperture/Shutter speed, lighting conditions (which includes making my own lightbox), and image editing in Photoshop.

If you'd like to see my Flickr portfolio, go here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/logangraham/)! I only uploaded them yesterday, because I made 2 makeshift lightboxes while I was sick (still am).

If you'd like to educate me on anything (that's what I'm here for), just reply below!

Hello everyone,

My name is Antonio and I'm from Guam although I was born in Missouri. I am a Secondary Education major specializing in Social Studies. My interest include skateboarding, paintball, guitar, and swimming.

I would take pictures with digital cameras but not like what I was limited too. Seeing so much potential in a subject I didn't know what to do. I found out about DSLR's and since I liked Canon (I saw a lot of sports photographers using them) I decided to get a 50D off the bat. After 2 months into photography I'm still learning head on. I would like to be recognized as a paintball photographer (and Guam's first in fact!) but I still admire landscape, model, and macro shots. I love photography. It's really fun taking a photo of something people don't think would look nice then when I show the photo to them, their jaw drops.

I was thinking I didn't want to turn this into a business or try to make money out of it. However, my gear needs to pay for itself and paintball and music already suck money out of me.

I'm really glad I found this forum. Everyone is polite but honest at the same time. There's no bs with the mods and no one rips on another. Regardless if I ever become a professional photographer I will never forget this forum that has helped me so much thus far.

Thank you all!

Hello from Kentucky :)

On the recommendation of a friend I've been perusing your forum for a few days now and I like what i see. Everyone seems to have a generally pleasant disposition while offering up loads of helpful information. I hope to be able to contribute to your community as well as improve my less than stellar photography skills.

Hi all...I've been lurking for a few weeks and finally got around to registering a few days ago. My PS died recently and I decided to go ahead and upgrade. Since it's close to the holidays and I work in the automotive industry in Detroit (Read: unstable at best) I am cash conscious.

Instead of buying new, I cashed in 251,000 Marriott points (I still have 250,000+ left, lol) for a new XSi 18-55mm kit and a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Zoom Lens. I've learned a lot and can't wait for UPS to bring my new gear. I have no formal training so I look forward to absorbing as much as I can here. Coincidently, I just checked the tracking info and it will be delivered tomorrow, woohoo! :)

don't let anyone dis that lense, it does well as you are learning shutter speed, aperture, and focus. i learned on my own also, this forum's a great resource.

Well hello there!

My name is Dan, I am 18 years of age and live in Cumbria, UK where the scenery is beautiful yet wet.

Being from Cumbria and now on a photography forum you are probably expecting beautiful scenic shots etc. Well, if you are, you couldn't be further from the truth!

My photography is raw, to the point, basic yet, taken with love. Any events I go to, I bring my camera with me. It is not a fancy camera, it is a Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W80 7.2MP.

Since the age of 11 I have participated in Stock Car Racing and continue to do so. I have been brought up around racing. My father has a Ford MKII Escort Rally Car and does Tarmac Championships across the UK and on many occasions when I was little, I was taken with him. I loved everything about it. The noise, the smell, the cars. And this is probably what started off my little photography hobby.

As you will see in my signature, there is a link to my Photography website (just created a few days ago). There are two areas of photography that I am mostly orientated around. Motorsport, and Music. Two of my loves.

Anyway, if you would like to know something, please don't hesitate to ask me!

Hello all:
I'm relatively new to photography. I joined the site in May but have been very busy that I started only following it regularly only in the last month.
It's kind of addictive reading and learning more from others here.

I'm 37 year old from Kansas City area. Have a very busy life, and photography is like therapy to me. I can forget myself for hours clicking away.
I hope to get to know more people, and learn from you all guys.

Greetings! I'm Stefan, a graphic designer from Serbia, and I've got into photography only recently- but yeah, I always wanted to try it :)

I'm quite handy with Photoshop, and I've found that my skills as a designer can help quite a bit when shooting, composing and post-processing pictures. Of course, that doesn't mean that I'm not accepting comments and criticism! Any advice I can get would be much appreciated :)

I've been lurking here on the forums for quite some time (read the WHOLE 370-page topic about the nifty fifty, for example) but I've decided it's time to get a bit more active :)

I've three objectives and a flimsy tripod in my modest collection, with some more miscellaneous stuff on the way (yay, a wireless trigger!), it's dark and I'm wearing sunglasses. Hit it.

Hi all! My name is Mary, I'm from the Chicago area and have recently been getting into photography and trying to improve my skills. I'm fairly proficient with an SD1100 hubby got me for an anniversary gift in hopes I'd quit pestering to use his 20D. Now, I get to use the 20D and am looking to improve my skills. I like nature photography and am working on learning to use light to my advantage and to memorize the 20D manual-LOL.
