Is there an objective review of 'compatible' ink quality for inkjet printers?

The UK cost of Epson branded ink for my old Epson Stylus Color 740 is much more than for 'compatible' ink - but it is hard to know how the quality of such cheap inks compare with Epson's.

I am planning to buy a Canon i950 to obtain high quality output. It may not then make sense to compromise print quality by using inferior inks.

I've got the Epson 870 and been trying third party ink from 7dayshop.com. This third party ink has caused me nothing but problems and costs just as much in the long term in wasted cartridges and wsted media, I often needed to clean the heads 4/5 times or even worse the heads would clog half way through a print (nothing more frustrating).

I'm just about to get a i950 ( iwon in competition), but am thinking of selling it (even though it has great reviews) and opting for the Epson 2100 for the pigment inks (not sure about selling Dye prints from either 870 or i950) and am constantly dissappionted with printers (like jessops, lab35 etc).
hope this helps

I would instead keep the i950.
