Can anyone help me, when I look at the properties of a picture it gives me all the information except details of the flash use, why is that? Hope you understand what I mean. I should have mentioned the camera is a 350D.

Thanks Andy

What software are you using to look at the exif with?

What flash details are you looking for? I don't think you'll get much information on the flash other than fired, mode/did not fire.

On the same topic, I used an external flash and my exif says "No flash fired". Is that normal?

To the OP, I have never seen any other flash info. except yes or no.

When you say external flash, do you mean a studio strobe or a hotshoe mounted speedlight? If you use a non-Canon flash or a studio strobe, I don't think any information is exchanged and the EXIF data doesn't record any flash data (essentially the camera doesn't see the flash).

I am using windows to open the photo's it shows all the other info but does not acknowledge that the flash has fired.

In my EXIF data for shots taken with a 550EX or 580EX Speedlight flash, or with the on-board flash on the 10D or 20D, the EXIF data should indicate that the flash has fired or not fired. If you are not using a Speedlight EX flash, I do not know if that information is captured.

The Windows 'properties' summary is generic.. It's meant to read common EXIF tags from all camera manufacturers.. There is an EXIF standard, but it appears Canon puts the "flash on/off" in the Makernotes part of the EXIF data..

Makernotes is proprietary and varies from camera to camera.... Because the flash tag doesn't follow EXIF standards, it isn't included in the Windows EXIF display.. It shows flash.. but there is no value.. (This is also why you don't see other things in Windows.. such as the custom function settings)...

If you use Canon's software, you'll see whether the flash fired or not.. (Flash on or off)...

Thanks for that, Jim.
