View Full Version : Image Consistency

I have been experimenting with my new 10D for the last couple of months. I use mainly the P mode and either the Av or Tv mode secondary. I have had no consistency in the image exposure from one frame to the other (with the same composition). Has anyone had the same problem or better have a solution? I find the main problem area is with outside shots.

It also appears that the camera shoots 1/2 to 1 1/2 stop underexposed.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

When you say "same composition" do you mean you put it on a tripod and fired off a bunch of shots in succession or do you mean "very similar composition"?

If the latter, then if your composition is contrasty (for example if part of it is bright sky) and your composition is changing just a bit, that could affect the exposure.

What metering pattern are you using? Are you seeing the exposure shifting around in the viewfinder? Perhaps you could post some examples? Have you tried using the exposure lock?

The Simple solution is either exposure lock, or manual exposure mode on the dial.

Take a pic using "P" "AV" ir "TV" and note the apature and shutter speeds. Then swith to "M: and dial in those settings,. the exposure stays the same.

Start to use the histogram to assess exposures settings. It's a big help. Don't rely on the LCD image: the 10D LCD seems to be too bright on many cameras and gives a misleading impression.

Get hold of a gray card to take some test readings to make sure your camera is metering accurately.

Thanks for the suggestions. I should have thought of the tried and true gray card. I will keep you posted.
