Basketball, in the average gym: 85mm f/1.8
Baseball or cricket: 300mm f/2.8 or 400mm f/2.8 + 1.4x or 2x extender (depending on the size of the playing area).
Football of either flavour: 300mm f/2.8 or 400mm f/2.8, with the 1.4x extender if the light allows.

300mm f/2.8 for baseball and I'll add a 1.4x TC to my kit prior to the 2006 season.

Basketball & Volleyball - 85mm f/1.8 or 50mm f/1.4
Baseball - 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS
Football (American) - 70-200mm f/2.8L IS
Edit: The 85mm f/1.8 works great for High School Wrestling as well (just found that out last night.)

Probably a Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS for outdoor sports if I had one... but I get by with my sigma 70-200 f2.8 and 1.4 extender - oh, ignorance is bliss! Use the same mostly for hockey - without the extender.
Indoor, basketball/volleyball - hey, the canon f1.8 is fantastic. I also get some pretty good basketball shots with the sigma 30mm f1.4 too.

22...may I ask what extender you use with your Sigma and how well it works? I recently received my new Sigma 70-200 2.8 that I'll be using for hockey and was thinking of an extender for the baseball season.
