Hi,
Is there anyway to use a sunpack 2000DZ flash with 350D?
I got it from my dad along with his old AE-1 and it works fine when I use it on that camera, but it won't shoot when I put it on the 350D.

The AE-1 used a completely different flash metering system than the 350D does. From the look of your picture, the Sunpak has its own sensor for determining flash exposure. If it absolutely won't fire on the 350D, you might tape over the secondary contacts on the flash' hot shoe (leave the edge contact and the big round one exposed).

Be sure to check http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html first !!!
The one you have should be safe, according to the list.
But ... Some of the old flash units can fry your nice new camera!!!!
Best regards,
Andy

Doesn't the 350D, like the 20D, safely accomodate up to 250V trigger voltage? Maybe there's too much resistance in the circuit and that's why the flash isn't firing, given it's measured at 3V.

Too much resistance in which circuit?
The camera part of it is only a momentary short circuit, and that is the same whether the flash unit's trigger voltage is 3 volts, 5 volts, or 150 volts.

Max voltage for 350d is 6v

Where do you see that in Canon publications?

Sure that's not the 300D? The 350D, following the 20D with its higher voltage tolerance, is more likely to accept the higher voltage limit. Absent specific mention of the PC connector, the twomanuals read the same with reference to external 3rd-party strobes.

So, you don't see it anywhere in Canon publications?

Hint to the reader: "Bob Atkins"
He did a review on the 350D and said that it was 250 volt rating on the flash, just like the 20D.

Yeah, Chuck Westfall said it, too.

They say that we shouldn't believe anything that we read on the Internet.
I know I don't.
I don't even believe that I just said what I did.

No...just on these forums ....sure it was an extract from a canon email....am willing to stand corrected though.

Oh well, thanks guys.. Seems I need to invest a more modern flash then..
What would you guys recomend? The Sigma EF-500 DG Super or one of the Canon 400 series flashes?

Today i found the "Bob Atkins" version of the max trigger voltage.
http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/digital/eos_digital_rebel_xt_vs_20d.html
Still not convinced by this i rang canon in the uk. This did not help as they could not verify that the max voltage was 250v.
So i will continue to assume the max voltage is 6v and use my safe sync circuit! Better safe than sorry, i cannot afford a replacement 350d and i urge others to be wary of using flashguns with high trigger voltage.
Show me official canon documentation that states otherwise and i will change my mind.

Time to raise the dead because I just bought one of these flashes for $20 bucks and I haven't been able to find a manual online. It works pretty good with my 350D on manual with me tweaking the shutter speed. The recycle time is around 3 seconds with cheap on sale batteries but I have no Idea what the power settings are. I'm assuming the bottom right are power and config but have no Idea what they mean.
I'm sure you guys who use the flashy thing can tell me..Thanks.
