Hi. I joined the forum a while back but have not been active. I'd like to change that so after finding this thread, I thought I'd let everyone know that I too and from MI. I live in north-central Oakland County, Brandon Township, near Ortonville.

So anyone planning to go down to the Red Bull Air Race the last weekend of the month? www.redbullairrace.com (http://www.redbullairrace.com)
I'm planning to go and am thinking about sitting on the Windsor side should make for some cool pictures with the Detroit skyline in the background.
Yep! Will be there in Zone 1 on Sunday for the race.

I'm headed to Grand Rapids in about 2 weeks, can anybody recommend any spots I should visit?
It depends on what you are looking to get shots of really...
Reed's Lake in East Grand Rapids is nice for nature shots, sailboats, landscape, etc.
Frederick Meijer Gardens is also quite nice.
There's a lot of construction going on in downtown Grand Rapids (cranes, etc), so if that's your thing... Night pictures of the city down at the Grand River can be fun as well.
John Ball Park Zoo
The lakeshore (Grand Haven, Holland, Saugatuck) would be good places to visit if you are interested in beach photos/lighthouses/sunsets, etc.Just a few I can think of off the top of my head... I am sure that others will have more ideas than me :)

Any tips for the Redbull Races this up coming weekend? I'll be using a Canon 1D and a Sigma 100-300 F4 EX DG. Should I manually focus, I'm not sure how quick this lens tracks , never panned with it before. I'll be on the Windsor side, Zone 5 on Saturday and Zone 6 on Raceday.
Anyone else going from Windsor?

It's tough to find the right combination of sharp shots & prop blur. Sometimes it helps to practice with traffic for a warm up before the shoot. Marauder61 always seems to get it right. (Pro trick: Or maybe he just shows us the great ones?) :D

I scored media access to the air races. I'm going to try to be down there as much as time allows between work and school.
Plan on bringing my XT w/ 18-50mm f/2.8, and my 40D with 70-200mm f/4L (and possibly a TC).
If I could afford it, I'd be picking up a 35mm f/2.0 for MMA on saturday and a nice long prime for the air races. Guess I may have to settle on a 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III for the reach.. ah well.

I shoot for a website that covers the social scene for Detroit, my boss sent them a request on my behalf (almost out of boredom, just to see if it'd work).
They bit, and we're in! Yes, I know.. huge luck-out. I'm hoping to push my gear to the limits on this one. I'm down at Wayne State for class thursday/friday, and I have to shoot MMA on Saturday night, so that kinda limits the time I can be down there to time after class, most of Saturday, and all of Sunday.

Has anyone started thinking about getting tickets to the UPBA Gold Cup race on the Detroit River this year??? July 11-13? It might be an opportunity for a POTN get-together... Plus I don't think you'll get harassed for bringing pro gear in. Thoughts????

Speaking of a get together. Thunder over Michigan is August 9th and 10th. The line up of aircraft looks like it will be pretty good. And the Wilson Barn car show in Livonia is June 8th. If anyone is interested let me know.

I wish I could take a 2nd shooter, but we only put in for a single pass. Probably should have asked for a +1 or +2.. next year maybe.
We're going to throw a request towards the UPBA, gonna keep my fingers crossed.
I totally forgot about the Thunder over MI. I've always wanted to make it out there to shoot that. Maybe this year finally.

I thought it was APBA Gold Cup. And there's lots a folks with pro gear there, you just need to get good seats as high up in the grandstands as you can to shot over the fence. Pit passes are cool too.

Whoops, my bad- you're right its APBA. I was looking at getting tickets for the Commodore's Club (In Waterworks Grandstand) for the "top 5" rows... (prime grand stand seating...). It will be adjacent to the pits. Do you think I'd be able to grab some good shots there with my 100-400? Or do you think my 70-200 might do a better job?
I haven't been to these races in years since I was a kid when I used to go all the time... So any input you have would be greatly appreciated!

www.gold-cup.com For the latest. It's not easy getting those seats, people whho had them the year before get first shot. Sometimes you get lucky though. Iv'e been getting mine in March except this year I screwed up and forgot and now I'm scrambling. I have tickets to the Air races on the Windsor side sat & sun and a room so I'll be there early to beat the crowd I hope for Sunday 's race. Maybe I'm lucky (or probably naive) but I just stopped by gold-cup.com and apparently was able to purchase a pair of tickets to the Commodore club in the "Top 5" row section.... Hopefully Mother Nature will give us a good day there in July.... I'll be armed I think with my 30D and I'll let the wife fire away with my 5D (I want the fps advantage of my 30D).. Hopefully I'll bag a nice shot or two that day...
Best of luck this weekend to and hopefulyl you'll get nice weather!

Some bad news for anyone who was planning on going to the Stars and Stripes Fest in Mount Clemens in the end of June.
Website now has a new camera policy in their FAQ section. No pro gear allowed in music areas. No higher end P&S's either..
I've caught a few rumors flying about people who called and were told no SLR's period. Sounds like another power trip to keep photographers under tight scrutiny, and not much cohesion on educating staff what is and what is not allowed.
Certainly a disappointing change in policy.

Howdy, just a quick FYI. If anyone is interested in shooting a boat race. This weekend June 21-22 there is a race in Augusta. A small town just west of Battle Creek. It is at Eagle Lake. Boats are not super fast. Depending on the class of boat they will go from 30mph upto 80mph. If you stop be sure to say hi, I'll be the driver in the Red Rescue Boat. I have been told the regular Pro photographer will not be there, so if you take good shots and are willing to sell them bring business cards, you may be able to sell some. If you'd like a peak at the boats go to my site, look at any boat race BUT Bay City, that is the class of boat you'd be shooting.
If you want REALLY fast boats go to Bay City, River Roar is coming and those boats are awesome. If you wanna take a peak at those boats you can also see them in my Bay City section of the web site.
PS both of the races do allow pro-cameras. PLEASE be sure to follow rules. if you need a wrist band get one. If you come to Augusta it will start about 10-11 am. grab me and I'll get you to the risk manager to get your band. You'll be in the pits and can get some good shots.
PSS if there is a crash do not put down the camera, the rescue team would buy pictures of us in action. Seams i alway drop the camera and go into rescue mode and have yet to get an action shot of us. (been doing it 15 years)
Thanks

I somehow doubt that a few less people with cameras is going to devastate their event. It's free to the public, so they're not making any extra money by having fewer people attend.
I'm hoping I can swing a media pass with the website I shoot for, and if that falls through I'm good friends w/ one of the bands that will be playing on the opening night, so I might try to work something out through them.
It's just a bummer that they're limiting photographers. Hopefully other free summer festivals don't follow suit.

From the Flint Michigan Area myself. Had (have) the Canon EOS Rebel X (35mm) for about 8 years now, just upgraded last week to the Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi/450D.
Took one photography course through the local community college back when I first got the Rebel X, and have forgotten 70% of what I learned , but thats my fault, ended up putting the camera up for about 2 1/2 years there , then when I picked it back up again I kept it in the Automatic modes and didnt mess with the Creative Modes.

Brings to mind some locations that would make for a very productive meet in Detroit that otherwise aren't options because of safety concerns.
Anyone think they'd be interested in a trip to the train station or the book depo? I personally have never been, but always wanted to make a trip out there.

Beneath the overpass....a certain rusted door opens, one person holds the other slides in. You'll need a flashlight for approx 200 feet and you'll enter in the old waiting / staging area for the trains. The first floor is relatively clean since they shot two movies there the past five years, however the upper floors are cluttered. Don't wear tennis shoes, leather shoes are a better choice. It'll take 2-3 hours to shoot what you want on the first three floors so give yourself allot of time. The sun gets nice around noon. I know one person who went to the roof and had to stumble back down in the dark. Shorter daylight hours in the winter. You won't be alone, there were other photographers with tripods when I went in two years ago. Bring a tripod!
Midwest Photograhy Workshps actually holds a weekend field trip class in the Train Station. I believe it's listed under the Urban Decay Class.
I'll post they're link but the mod can delete if it's not appropriate.

Bi-weekly or bi-monthly? I'd be willing to make a few excursions that way if you guys get an outting together. My brother-in-law lives in Travese by the mall / Sam's Club so I have free rooming! I was outto Mission Point Lighthouse and stopped by at a few wine tastings a few weeks back.

Traverse is a bit of a road trip for me.. I probably won't be able to.
My father did a few of the MPW classes, got some insane shots out of it. Just figured I'd check to see if anyone would be interested in making an outing of it. Strength/safety in numbers and all, you know? Btw, where exactly do you park before you head inside?
I've been pretty swamped lately. Two jobs plus 20 credit hours, last semester before graduation, and in the middle of some police dept. apps. I'm hoping I can make it out to at least a game or two for the football/soccer teams, but who knows.

And I Will be doing a lot of shooting this winter even if I'm snowed in since I will be starting college summer of 09.

I took a ride to look at the train station the other day (scary stuff). I know I wouldn't want to try to go in alone, and I carry a gun(legally). I was wondering if we got together to go in, could we get busted for trespassing?
It really kind of made me sick to see the condition this building is in. I can remember being in there 35 years ago taking pictures. I can remember the beautiful high arched ceilings . The thing I remember the most is the old soda fountain they had in there with the red vinyl stools and the old coca cola menu on the wall.
If any of you guys want to get together and give it a try let me know,as long as I don't get busted doing anything I'm not supposed to be doing(I'm too old to go to jail):D

How bout Hines Drive? I shot some cars there a few years ago. There are some goo spots where you can get the foialge and water together. The maple in my back yard is showing a little coloration (new word usage?) so I suspect the time is coming fast upon us.

Hines runs from Dearborn all the way to Northville in a North West diagonal path. It starts just west of Telegraph at Ford Road and ends at Sheldon and Seven Mile. If you mapquest for 48124 you just need to scroll up to Ford road and you will find Hines. There are several lakes as you get near Northville that are scenic.

The Mid Michigan faire is new this year. The grounds are actually larger than the Holly grounds. As it is right now, they are booked solid for vendors and actors. In order to allow for any more they must expand the development of the grounds. They have plenty of room just not enough time to do all the work planned. Next year it will be even bigger.
