In case anyone's interested, there's a Michigan P.O.T.N. group page on Facebook.

Not really sure there are any "benefits" :)
I'm sure it would let any "friends" on fb see more of your work seeing as how the group is public.
I dunno, just something different...

I'm from White Lake, Michigan near Waterford off M-59 and the big rivalry game is not going as hoped - Michigan is LOSING today! Argh!
PM me if interested in a local gathering in White Lake, Waterford, Clarkston, West Bloomfield, Farmington Hills, Novi or somewhere near these cities. I'm thinking of starting up a local meet for avid POTN lurkers since the weather is turning cold on us and some of us are about to go into hybernation! Lol!
Let us know if you have anything in mind... We're in White Lake too.

Hey guys,
I've only lived in MI for a little over a year (I go to Eastern), but I originally hail from the OH. I'm in my second year there and looking to get into airplane photography. No camera yet, but one is on the way! Anyway, just thought I'd drop by to say hey! Ask A2EVOMR about my aerial photography platform abilities :D

RyanHard to imagine if you don't have a camera yet. I'd say RC airplane since that is what you mentioned. Do you fly FPV? How much weight can it carry?
Edit: I viewed a few of your posts and see that your a full scale pilot. You do real FPV "first person view". A commercial rating is required if you receive compensation of any form.

I'd really like to do a meetup in the Grand Rapids area sometime soon. We could do urban stuff downtown, or head out to the lake and catch a couple beaches/lighthouses. I also heard about a large farm which is availlable for rent locally that was quite cheap the last time I shot them an email. I don't know if it'd be worth it or not, as there is an abundance of beautiful nature locally. (Here's a link to some shots, not be me: http://s188.photobucket.com/albums/z319/plafkinfarms/)
Please send me an email if you'd be interested in hooking up some weekend soon, and especially if you have ideas for good locations in this area during the winter!

Tuaz, Frank (PhotosGuy) has put together several shoots at Waterford Hills over the last few years. Every time we've been there with him we've had a lot of fun. Lots of photography talk, tons of shooting, a bit of tailgating and a very relaxing time...
I think we've all gone home with several sun burns there too.

From clinton twp! Just got my 550d couple weeks back. Mostly will be shooting family group pictures and portraits. Then a little of cars, landscape, and sports here and there. My plans are getting the sigma 30mm 1.4, canon 85mm 1.8, and 70-200mm 2.8L. That will cover the whole spectrum of what i want to mostly shoot.

If you want to go to Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo check out Norman Camera.
They have a good selection up to a 300 f4.0 and a 100-400 that you are welcome to try on site.
A case full of Sigma too--but not sure of the selection as third party glass is not my thing;)

Welcome to the world of fiscal reality. At least Gov' Rick is not telling us that we are 'going to be blown away in prosperity" as Gov' Jennifer told us. The public sector people will soon be living similar to what many in the private sector have been coping with since the early 1980's, and it ain't going to be confined to the Wolverine state.

Thanks for the compliment. My previous station was on the west coast of Puerto Rico. That is where I picked up this expensive hobby. I was in for a shock when I got here and all there was here was hurricanes and birds to take pictures of. I am really looking forward to the opportunities to shoot throughout the state.
I am going to be stationed on the ice breaking ship that ties up downtown. I recognize Belle isle, but not the other ones.
Any advice on where to live? I have been doing a little research and Grosse Point looks good as well as Troy, but I have had my share of disappointment on places I have scoped out on the net.

GP and Troy both good choices. Add Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Northville, Canton, Rochester Hills and some of Royal Oak to your list. I don't know the east side of town so well.
If you are a boater in your free time you may want to concentrate on the GP's and St. Clair Shores. Although if you are into both photography and boating you may want to get your head examined. ;)
With the current state of housing values you should be able to pick up a very good deal. Advice: look at the schools and look at plenty of houses

I have been doing a little research and Grosse Point looks good as well as Troy, I live in Troy, but that's going to be a tough commute to Belle Isle, even when the weather is good. Do you know what your work schedule will be? Off-hours commuting isn't that bad (usually).
Troy has money troubles right now, but it's a good place to live. Royal Oak (lived there too.) has a lot going on & it's a few miles closer.

Great, I will keep those other places in mind. You're not thefirst that has brought that to my attention about getting my head check. My wife is normally hitting me over the head to choose between the two,

Going to be around 7-3 normally. Maquest had a 30 minute drive. Is it more than that?

Sounds about right. Since I don't work downtown, I don't know the effect of rush hour (or road construction).
Feel free to pose more questions as you start looking on the ground. You may want to PM rather than clog up this thread. I'll defer to Frank on that score

Money and job mostly. I have not enough money to move and try and find a job in my field elsewhere. :/

Good point about construction, though. Those orange barrels grow overnight like mushrooms. ;)

I work at Ford Proving Grounds at the chassis dynos. Really, I watch cars run in place. I am a mechanic also, but that's lost it's pizazz. Not a fan at all anymore.

Anything that you have to do everyday tends to lose it's pizazz. When I was working at the GM dealer I was ready to quit the profession and do something else. But after spending more time working other jobs for the last two years, I am definitely ready to get back into the shop. A dyno has all kinds of magic until you use it more than one day in a row. I have to say though, I never got tired of working on Corvettes or pickup trucks.

Thanks for the welcome PhotosGuy!
What do I like to shoot? Umm, probably just about everything. Not that good, yet,to specialize in one area-LOL. Am bound to get a few "keepers" if I shoot alot.
Right now I have a T1i and the 2 kit lenses-18-55 and 55-250. Am waiting for my ebay 28-105 f3.5-4.5 usm lens right now, am also after the canon 70-300 is usm-hoping for a good deal.
Basically I like macro, scenery, my kids sports, and family memories-I like to scrapbook(reason for the Dr Seuss quote).
Thanks again for the welcome. Truly enjoy reading and learning here.

haha it's much less sophisticated than that. It was coined by Joe McNally and stands for "voice-activated light stand": someone who holds, carries, and repositions lighting equipment :D

I am still very much learning, so everything! When I get the time, I practice on anything I can around the house and yard. Unfortunately though, there is of course work. And this year, my work has taken pretty much all of my free time. :( So I don't get to shoot as much as I would like, but I do get to spend a lot of time on this forum instead .:D Which is good in it's own way. There are a lot of great people on here who know more about photography than I ever will. I just need some of that knowledge to rub off onto me.
My goal is not to become a professional, or to have something published, but just to capture all the moments that will happen in my new, growing family.

Figured I'd drop in and say Hi. I'm in South east Michigan. Taylor to be exact. I've alway been interested in photography but just started getting into it (dslr) a couple years ago. It's only been about a year since I started to get into it in any type of "serious" fashion (reading more, figuring out how to use the gear properly, trying different things, ext). Always looking for new things to learn, how to get better, and different things/places to shoot.
Welcome to POTN, everyone! What do you like to shoot?
I mainly shoot landscape type stuff but I've been wanting to try my hand at portrait shooting now (and I've been buying way to much gear)

Any S.E. Michiganders (or anyone else) interested in getting together for a meet-up sometime later this spring or summer? I was reading couple of threads for meet-ups on other states, and thoght it might be kinda cool to get together with fellow shooters in this area and do something we might not do ourselves.
Be a great chance to meet and get to know other "locals" here on POTN and have some fun. Open for ideas on where and what to shoot, I know there are all kinds of interesting things in this area.
Your thoughts....
