I am a newbie to D-SLR. I learn a lot from this forum. Thank you so much for sharing your experience here. I only got my 10D for 2 weeks and I love it so much.
I have 17-40 F4L and 50 f1.8 now and is considering a longer lense probably for portrait. I have read some good comment on 100 f2.8 macro but will it be too long for portrait when x1.6? Or is there any other choice?
Thanks
Here's some of my test shots:

That's a nice lens.
Other choices in your range are the 100 f2, 85 f1.8 and 85 f1.2. All of those are also very good. I have the last and it's my favorite overall lens.

Consider the 2,0/135 L USM. The big 2,0 gives you a dramatic DOF and the nearly round apperture makes the background very soft.
Additional this lens is sharp like a rasor.

135 x 1.6 is like 220mm on 10D, will that be too long?
My next target is the 70-200 f4L. Now I'm more tend to 100f2.8 which can double as macro lense which sounds very attractive to me.
Some said 24-85 is sharp, can any user comment on that?

"...for portrait"
believe it or not your 50mm is a great portrait lens. I have the same one for my D60 & it works exceptionally well.. 80mm equiv. @ 1.6x.
I also use a 100mm f/2.. amazing lens that is pretty unnoticed by most. You'd think w/ the 1.6x factor it's too much, but I haven't found this a problem.
note that for portraits you want a wide aperture to obtain good bokeh (background blur)... IMO, prime lenses are the way to go here, unless you'd want to spring for a 24/28-70mm f/2.8.
for example, here's one I took w/ the 100mm f/2:
