Just got G1 for my wedding and took over 400 pictures down in Cabo. Got back and organized pictures for a slide show and used some renaming freeware to make names more descriptive for archiving/storage purposes. I now want to set up a small slide show and use G1 to drive a TV monitor. Problem is when I write the files I want to a flash card the G1 does not recognize unless i go back to the old IMG_XXXX.JPG format. Please say it ain't so!

It is so. You also can't put back anything you've edited, most likely. I think the EXIF information has to be intact.

Speaking of file management, I've finally gotten around to trying to organize about 9 months of images in some rational way using Zoombrowser. (Yes...I've been pointed to Breezebrowser and am about to try that out too!).
My question is...when I create a new Zoombrowser folder and move photos into it, it's not clear to me how the photos in the browser window are ordered, or how to change the order of the pictures in the thumbnail viewer. What I would like to do is arrange the photos from upper left to lower right being from oldest to newest. I can't drag and drop thumbnails within a folder, which would seem to be one solution, and I can't find anything in the Zoombroswer help that might give me a clue.
Any ideas how to order pictures within a Zoombrowser folder?

Zoombrowser is very good at quickly acquiring images from your camera complete with exif data and for processing raw format. However as an image viewer and database manager it is slow and unstable when compared to programs like Acdsee.
I just use ZB for emptying my camera and I use explorer to copy (not move) files from it to a directory on my hard drive where I use acdsee for organising and storing images.
ZB is contrary about altering its files with other applications hence the copy rather than move command. Once copied, you can then use zb to delete the last images and have an empty folder to download more.
Two other small programs I have found indispensable are Fash Renamer which will rename hundreds of images in seconds, and PixVue which gives you instant access to a preview and exif data by right clicking a jpeg file in Explorer.

AcdSee (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10077-100-1808446.html)
Pixvue (http://home.san.rr.com/pixvue/help1.html)

I did this with my G1 and some pictures I took in Costa Rica. I even uploaded images that I took with my 35mm film camera to the G1 for the slideshow.
It takes some trial and error. The camera-download window also has an Upload button. This will allow you to store images from your PC's hard disk into the G1. It even seems to fix the JPEG format as the G1 seems to be a bit picky about it. The trial and error part comes in because the software will ask you to upload the image as small, medium, or large. Depending on what you pick, you might get a tiny image or an image that has been cropped. I'm sure it's possible to figure out which to use based on pixel size, but I haven't used it that much. But I eventually got all my images into the G1 and set up a slideshow. Pretty handy.
