Practice, practice, practice! We tried some Christmas tree shots today. Just trying to get used to the equipment. Comments/suggestions desired.

I've added a re-worked version of the photo that I think I like better and is hopefully more technically correct also.

Actually, very good composition. Nice work!

I am new to this to really know but, it seems that the top of her outfit is too bright and that distracts me a little. The facial tone looks good. The right side of the photo may be a little dark.

Nice work with the model, she has a perfectly relaxed and pleasant appearance.

I think your highlights may be a bit overexposed. I lose the detail in the white sweater. It's always hard to get a good exposure when the subject is wearing white. I think your camera factored in too much of the background when metering for the shot. I would have stepped forward (or zoomed in) so that the white sweater filled most of the view finder, then held down the exposure lock when I reframed for the shot. If I lost too much detail in the shadows, I would have brought them out in post processing.

All in all, you did good!

Thanks all for the comments. I should have know better when I saw her in white. It's her color but a real tough one to deal with at my level of expertise. Well, it WAS a practice session.

VegasGeorge - Using studio lights and remote flash (no Canon wireless yet) I'm not sure how I could meter this with the camera. Perhaps a flash meter which is on the list to acquire? Everything was manual mode. But I do agree that the sweater looks a bit blown.

The playback and histogram should have made it clear that the sweater has insufficient detail. Did it not show up as clipping on the histogram?

If you were shooting RAW it may be repairable. Even if you were not shooting RAW, did you try Image->Adjustments->Shadows/Highlights?

Bob - it didn't show in the histogram because it was blown out in post processing. I don't know who might have done that but I have my suspicions..... The more I look at this image the less I like the post processing on it but I want to try to fix it. It was indeed shot in RAW and I am just learning raw in CS2. I'll fix and re-post in the AM. Thanks for your input.

That's good news. If you are just learning RAW processing, allow me to recommend my paper on that subject at the following:

Thanks Bob, I read this last night. Good stuff that will require several more readings. I've re-worked the image from raw to final and like it better than the first one. Looking at the first image it was just too bright and the color looked off - at least from reality.
