Hi all, I've recently made the decision to upgrade from the pro 1 to the 350XT. incredibly excited and i'm looking forward to the new camera. although it is a bit of an extra expense. so, my thought now is should I keep the pro 1 as a backup or sell it to offset a portion of the new camera. just looking for a little feedback, or a good justification for keeping the old camera. Sari.

If it's in super duper like new condition, I'd say sell it. It's getting a bit outdated. However, if it's not in tip top shape, you'll probably not get what you want out of it, and it'd be more worth it to you to just keep it. Really up to you.

If you keep the pro 1,.. then you can decide after you are more familiar with your new 350 if you want to hold onto it or not...

I decided to keep my G2 as walk-around-cam when I got my 20D about a year ago ... haven't used it even once since then

Just thought I'd tell you...

Best regards,
Andy

PS: Maybe you'd know somebody who'd be happy to receive a Pro1 as Christmas gift...

I'm with Andy. I don't even know where's my 300D after buying the 20D.

Got my A80 after the D60 so I could carry something a bit smaller around on a daily basis. I don't think the Pro 1 is small enough to fit into that catgory though . . .

So the suggestion might be ... sell it now when you can still get a decent price for it ... once the Pro2 is out, it won't be as attractive as it is now, just before Christmas.

Best regards,
Andy

I use my G6 a lot for street photography even after I got my 20d nearly a year ago. It's more compact and accompanies me on 'non-photographic' trips and errands, That way, I never miss a shot. It's all up to you - if you'd like a compact camera that you can carry at the times when a dSLR won't do, keep it. Otherwise sell it for more dSLR glass, or give it to someone who will use it.

One thing you can do is check ebay and such to see how much one selss for used. If you are thinking that getting $500 for it would help off set the cost of your new camera, and then discover they only seem to go for around $10 that may swing your decision.

$10 for the Pro1? I'll take 20 of those please! Seriously it might go for $400 to $500, I think. I would keep it, but that's just me.

He didn't mean the $10 literally but as an example of dropping in price ;) If it were that cheap, all of us will buy a couple of them :D

Thank you, spot on. The $10 was deliberately low to overstate the point, not because I really expected the camera to sell for $10. I have no idea of the value of a Pro1, the numbers were simply illustrative and do not indicate an anticipated value. :)

Sounds almost like a legal disclaimer that. :)

I'd keep it for a backup camera in case (shudder) your DSLR malfunctions and needs to be sent in for service. It's also nice sometimes not to have to lug around a DSLR and all the lenses and other crap that goes along with it.

Hi Liza. I would have agreed with you if it were a different/smaller P&S, but the Pro1 is almost the same size as the 350XT.

I forgot about the XT being so small. I lug around the 20D and a case full of lenses to various sporting events, so that's my point of reference.

thank you all for your thoughts, in case your wondering here's the decision. my uncle is considering between a couple of cameras if he wants mine i'm selling it to him for about four hundred, if he decides to go for a different camera then i'm keeping it. by the way, I got my 350D this morning. I have never wrote a check for this much money at one time. but after half an hour doing practice shots of my christmas tree I think my pro 1 days are over..... and the sizes between the two are extremely similar (before lenses). All in all i'm completely thrilled with my new camera but I do feel kind of sentimental about the pro 1.... maybe it's a girl thing.... anyway, I would be very happy to keep it just to have on hand. but, as crazy as this sounds I know my uncle would take good care of it and get some great use out of it. kind of like giving a puppy a new home. Plus, I want him to shut up about film versus digital and I want him to shut up about nikon... sari.

my six year old niece keeps asking for my old camera. I have a little point and shoot under the christmas tree for her. but, it is kind of funny that the little blonde first grader is convinced that she should be able to have a six hundred dollar camera.... kind of scary that she's already got such big ideas. Sari.

Actually, I am happy that my 2-year-old can still be convinced that he is not that he is not allowed to have my 20D ... and only insists on using my G2 instead...

I have tried to give him an old manual M42 camera instead for playing, but he does not understand what value a camera has if you can not see the images

Best regards,
Andy

a two year old with a 20D??? mine doesn't pay any attention thank god. but I understand the wanting to see the images with the little ones. the six year old knows how to take the picture and download it onto the computer so she can view them. it's fine with me as long as i'm around to surpervise. makes me nervous sometimes. like when she wanted to borrow my pro 1 to take to her riding lessons. a six year old on a horse with MY camera. i'm just not that cool. howd i miss this one?

i did the same thing, went from pro1 to 350D, and kept the pro1.I love the pro1, esp. for macro..hey, i get great macro shots and dont have to buy a macro lens! (of course i did have to buy the pro1) but it does have the "L" lens on it and its 8 MP and works great for landscape, macros,portraits..basically, anything that doesnt move!

how did I think that my kids were the only ones who do that.... I know exactly what you're talking about. Sari.
