View Full Version : Photo browsers/management software that work with CRW

Is there a list of photo browsers and image management tools that work with Canon Raw files, in my particular case a Canon S50, but I hope to replace my film cameras in the not too distant future.

I know that iMATCH works, to a limited extent, Thumbs Plus has recently released a Plug-In. But the demo's of Canto Cumulus, Fotostation Pro, and Extensis Portfolio don't seem able to recognise the CRW files.

The currently available PC version of iView won't read CRW, but possibly the Pro version will, when it is released.

This must be a recurring question, and I mahoping someone will be able to point me to a web site which covers this issue.

Many Thanks

Hi Myotis.

Freeware "irfanview" can handle the job quite well, it just depends on what you mean by "image management tools". It actually uses the CANON dll's which you can download from a link on their site.

I personally use BreezeBrowser, $45 to purchase or free if you can live with a limit of 12(?) images per shot in batch operation.

I'm sure there are others.

Good luck.

ACDSee 5.0 can handle the CRW-format and is a great organizer.

I should have made myself clearer. I too use BreezeBrowser and indeed Downloader Pro and Irfanview, but I was meaning cataloging programs like the ones I listed. I suppose I am surprised that the big names like Cumulus, Fotostation and Extensis seem to make no specific mention of working with camera files on their web site. Or maybe I cannot find it. I was hoping that maybe I was missing something.

Thanks for the reply.

Graham

Irfanview handles my G2 .crw files ok but doesn't seem able to cope with 10D files.

Yes there have been some changes to the 10d Raw format and a few programs have been caught out.

I sent IrfanView a 10D crw file & they've emailed me to say they'll upgrade the program soon.

Hi
IrfanView 3.8 (German) works fine with EOS 10D CRW-Files. But it is a little buggy. For making it work with the files you have to patch the i_view32.ini file in the main directory of IrfanView.
Search for the entry
ReadCanonCRW=1
and change it to
ReadCanonCRW=0
After I have done this it started working with my CRW-Files.
Good Luck!

PS: I have not contacted the author of IrfanView jet. But I will soon
