Have just started using my new IXUS400 (first dig cam)for short movies and notice a background hiss even when recording in a silent room. Is this common to all cameras of this sort? (due to the size/location of the mic) I did see an old post on the S30 that said all S30s suffered from this. Just want to know if I sholud have it checked or not.

OK so I was economical with the truth in my earlier post re my old A20. I couldn't wait and bought an A70 on Monday. I've been trying it out!
I noticed the same problem with movies. I guess its just electronic noise that 'leaking' from the DIGIC processor chip. Here's my solution.
Don't move your fingers when recording. Or breathe too heavily!
1. I used cool edit pro to extract the sound from the movie.
2. I made a short (10 sec) movie in the quietest place I could find. I extracted the sound as above and converted it into a noise filter.
3. I applied the filter to the real movies sound file extracted at step 1.
4. I used cool edit to amplify the remaining sound and removed frequencies above 12kKz and below 60Hz
5. I saved the resultant wav file
6. I used videoworks to import the sound to the clip in 'replace sound' mode.
7. I saved the clip using the DivX codec reducing the file size by some 80%
When played in Windows media player the result is stunning and sounds great.
It sounds a lot of effort but only took 5 minutes!
