I was at my 5 year old sister's dance recital... and I got bored so I decided I would take some photos for my amusement, but I decided if I wanted to use them for future use I would of had to of gotten a release form... so I thought feet would be interesting... so here it is

Very nice work, and a creative way to get around the model release issue. I got some great shots of my 4-year old daughter's ballet class but won't post them for the same reason.
As far as critique goes, not much to suggest. Maybe some modest post-processing: leveling the floor, cropping a bit off the bottom and cloning over the highlight lines on the legs. Otherwise I like it very much!

Have to second Mitch on his comments (as most of the time). You might want to boost the red on the top a little to match it with the warmer red on the floor.

Great photo. The little feet one is better in quality. This one seems like you had to deal with a low light issue. Blurry. Levelling the photo would also help.

Yup, deffinently low light... I didnt know I was taking photos of this that day, so I didnt bring a tripod... so I used the stage, lol.

i really like the imagery of this photo. i think perhaps leveling the entire photo may improve it.
in re to the 'model release' what is the legalities of this? as an example, if i am out in a public place, at an outdoor maket as an example, can i use people photos that i took, in public places?

I'm not an expert on this issue, so I am sure others will correct me if I mis-speak...
As I understand it, if the subject is a significant part of the photo, you may not use it without a release. By way of example, a photo at a concert, which happens to have a few audience members in it but who are not the main subject of the photo can be used, but a photo of a particular person who you shot because of a facial expression, mode of dress or something like that (which is the focus of the photo) may not be used. There are also other exceptions which allow use without a release. If you plan on posting or publishing photos of people (I generally do not), it is something you should definitely read up on. I believe that laws vary somewhat from state to state, so it also depends in part where you are from.
Again, don't hold me to any of this...I could be way off base here, and I am sure some of the commercial and portrait photographers on this board would have better information than I do.

Thanks Chuck, I'll do a bit of research and see what I can find out.

Yes this is a lovely photo -- and we have had several similar shots over the year.
I just like the color -- it could just as easily be a field of tulips.
Besides leveling and cropping the bottom, I'd clone out that black spot on the floor and see if the black left hand side is essential.
Lovely colors.

I found this thread that has a different slant on the use of strangers in photos.

I'm not sure what slant you are referring to, they seem fairly consistent. However, law is always a gray area, and laws do vary from place to place, so inconsistencies are probably common in many forums.
For purposes of this board, where many are simply displaying photos, but not promoting a product or service (I think selling fine art photography would still be considered promoting) you are probably OK, but if you plan on selling prints, you will probably need a realease. I'm not an expert, its just my understanding. There are many professional photographers here who could probably provide more accurate information than I can.

That is an excellent thread.
A key point is made by the person who is an attorney: Regardless of whether a claim has merit, you can still be sued!
So if the faces had been shown in the dance recital photo, barnold999 might still face legal action and have to go through the hassle and expense of hiring a defense attorney - even if the photo is protected under the law.

There were opinions in the thread that said there is no legal issue with using photographs of people you take photos of on the street. This is the different slant that I was referring to.

That is probably true if you are not using them for commercial purposes.
