This was with my new 17-40mm L and it was better than I could have wished for.

I absolutely love this shot. Nice and sharp... no distracting cars or anything... and it has a European feel to it. Great photo.

I see plenty of evidence of cars ;)

Awesome shot. I like it lots.
It looks as if the UK roads dept/Gov are taking light polution seriously. It looks like there is little light escaping into the sky.

Most places suffer serious light pollution... I guess they may be trying to change?

This shot is amazing. I honestly think that I could not get a shot like this in San Diego no matter how hard I tried. Like adam* said, too much light pollution. Here's what a typical shot for me looks like :? Light everywhere!http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a378/speedy_3/wideangle_filtered.jpg

By the way do you have a hi re version. Would be a great desktop wallpaper!!

very nice image. I'd like to try night shots once i get the hang of my dSLR. One thing that puzzles me though, when using slow shutter to capture the movement of cars and such like, how come it is only really the lights that are visible, where is the streak of the actual vehicle?

cheers

Wow, great shot. I'm very new to DSLR or SLR camera. I just got a Rebel XT for Christmas and wish to capture an image similar to yours. Do you mind share the setting you set on your camera to captured that shot?

I'm no expert, infact I'm a total newbie but I'll use common sense to answer you. The lights leave an impression because they are an intense light source, the rest of the car doesn't produce light, it only reflects ambient light. While the car is moving, the reflected ambient light is not in one place for long enough to leave any real impression (or 'burn') on the sensor. I'm sure if the car was driving slowly enough, and the ambient light was strong enough, then you would infact see a streak of the car.

Someone will probably come up with a better way of explaining this but that makes sense to me.

What kind of WB did you use? tungsten or custom?

I used custom, I tried the preset at the time and nothing was right. But the day before I had manual WB some indoor lights at home and I switched it to that. And the result is as you see (done this method a few times now)
