Just wondering who is and who is not planning to upgrade. Since I'm still within my 30 days, I'm wondering if I should wait for the G5...
Any thoughts?

Nope, not planning to.
G3 is as good as G5, except with the 1 mp jump and other features.
I also heard the G5's photo's are supposively more noiser, anyone back it up perhaps?

I probably won't despite my compaints of shutterlag. The 1 megapixel jump isn't substantial enough, and I don't know what it would necessarily give me. I think at this point, if I were to upgrade, I'd probably go with a digital SLR if only to take advantage of better glass and a variety of lenses.

I have a G2 and I'm not going to upgrade. If the G5 had a 5x or 6x zoom I would have. Oh well, maybe the G6....

Here are G5 sample shots. Not really impressive...

I've not had my G3 that long and even if I did, the extra $$$ isn't worth it to me.

From the sample photos and specs I don't think there is anything exciting that will motivate a G3 (or G1 & G2) owner to upgrade. 1 MP is not a major improvement in the product line. The G5 is intended to lure future DC buyers away from other brands, not as an upgrade to current G owners. To get current G owners to upgrade, improvements need to be made in the OVF and internal flash in my opinion.

The main differences between G3 and G5 are:
1) 1 more mega Pixels
2) Black body
No intention of upgrading ... simply love my G3 ...

Absolutely not. It's me and my G3, dammit!
However, I'd be very interested in what they could do with the Pro90IS, which many feel is long overdue for an overhaul.

I bought the G3 after being sold by the picture quality from the G1 and G2.
I'm "detail rich" already in the 4mp world...so it's just too much trouble and money to think about it....I'm happy...like other posters, any eventual upgrade I do will be for a significant technical break or for...get this now...a camera just as good as the G3 but SMALLER!.....

I have about a month to decide whether or not to keep my G3. So, for me, it wouldn't be an upgrade as much as a more expensive choice. Depending on who you talk to, 1 MP can make a big difference. I won't necessarily be printing large posters (although the need came up the other day and my 4MP wasn't up to the task, but that had more to do with my unfamiliarity with the camera's features than the camera itself). What I will be doing is digitally cropping my pictures on my PC, and so perhaps the extra MP will come into play there...

I did a 24 X 36 print of a sunrise shot with my G3 that looks incredible. It can be done with a 4mp camera.

The price premium for the extra MP isn't worth it for the majority of uses for the majority of users, IMHO.
In fact, until the reviews are in and the potential downsides (additional noise or CA, or other unknowns) are clear, I think it's a potentially risky choice. I wouldn't have purchased the G3 if it was so new there wasn't a fair amount of info in terms of reviews and user discussion on webboards. Right now, "who you gonna call" to ask about their real-world experiences w/the G5? :-)
I don't think photography is a great place to be an early adopter...too many potential downsides w/new gear. I always intentionally stay back from the cutting (bleeding!) edge.
To mis-quote a line from "The Music Man:"
- The older but wiser camera for me. :-)

P.S. I do, however, have to admit that the black case is WAY sexy. I would have gotten the G3 in black were it available. The first time I see someone w/a G5 I know I'm going to have camera-color envy. ;-)

It seems that there might be a slight increase in noise due to the larger and warmer sensor. I can neither confirm nor deny this, since I am a happy G3 owner like everyone here and haven't seen comparative shots with the two. I would suggest, however, to see a side-by-side test and if the noise problem is only slight, or even non-existant, than DEFINITELY go for the G5. Since it is virtually the EXACT same camera with all the G3's great options and controls, an extra mega pixel will be worth it.

I'd love to see the shot you blew up...
I'm ready to buy a G3 and would like to have the ability to print larger than 8X10 if possible...

I found a site with a less than scientifc comparison of noise levels between the g3 and g5.

I thought the next model (G5) would have been much more advanced over the G3, so will continue with the G3 until then.

I still like my G2, but I'm very happy with my new G5 and just as happy I skipped the G3, though I was sorely tempted.
The G5 gives me perfect prints up to A3+, and they are spectacular!

I have only had my G3 for a little over a month. I thought about the G5, but basicaly did not want to pay for the extra MP.
My G3 is an awsome camera, and I know there are many pictures there waiting for me and my G3.

I bought my G3 about a month ago. I could have bought the G5, but just didn't think that 1 more megapixel was worth $150-$200. I've seen a bunch of posts on forums of G5 photos. They're great, but no better than a G3.
That extra money bought me a bunch of extra goodies.

My upgrade will not be to another point-and-shoot. My next digital will likely be the 10D or comparable digital SLR, but that's at least a year or two off!

i am a fairly new g3 girl and love it. i'd only consider trading up for a slr - perhaps the nikon d100.
skipgainer, homer simpson really said that?

No, i don't.
The g3 is a very good camera. Maby in the future i will buy a EOS 10D SLR or something like that. I think then you will notice the difference

Just jumped from the G2 (and prior to that the G1) to the G5 and I'm glad I did!

...and I would have too..
..but if you are already in a G3...it's best to wait for the next "jump" in quality or advantages...
G3 is just good enough...wait!
