I recently bought a laptop with a firewire port.

My lexar card reader has the large firewire connection.
the laptop has the small connection.

does anyone know where I can find a coupler to connect the two?

I've already tried Radioshack with no luck.

any help would be appreciated.

There are two types of firewire connectors, the bigger 6 pin connectors and the smaller 4 pin connectors. You can get firewire cables with any combination of these two connectors. You should be able to get these cables just about any place where they sell firewire cables, such as Best Buy, Staples, etc. Or, you can mail order them from The Gateway Accessory Store or any other online computer supply store.

BTW, here's the URL to the cable you want at Radio Shack:

thanks for the suggestion but that cable is male to male.

the Lexar is 6 pin male that is fixed at the reader end and the computer is 4 pin female.

I need a 6 pin female which converts to a 4 pin male.

I just tried the PCMCIA card from my old usb card reader.

does anyone know how much faster the firewire is vs. pcmcia?

the ease of not having to carry another item may outweigh the speed anyway.

When you say PCMCIA card, are you referring to the card where the CF card plugs into and then the PCMCIA cards plugs into the laptop? If so, that's as direct as you can get to connecting the CF card to the laptop. In order words, it won't be any slower than using the firewire card reader. Theoretically, it should be faster but the weakest link in this case is the speed of the CF card itself.

BTW, sorry about my previous cable suggestion. I didn't realize that you needed a 6-pin female on one end.

Yes exactly.

Thanks for the info!

I'm glad I don't have a carry a card reader with me.

I assumed it would be slower because of its' age,
5 years is a long time in the computer business.

don't be sorry for the suggestion PacAce,
I appreciate all the great help I receive here.

If not for this forum I would be still be using my S100 in Auto mode!
