hi,
I am looking at upgrading from the G3 to the 10D, and I am not to sure if I wont to keep the g3 as a 2nd camera.
How many of you have just a point and shoot as a 2nd camera.
I am not a rich man by any means of the word, so I am not to sure if I can justify the cost of the g3 once I have got the 10D
Your views on this will be most helpful.
Thanks

Sorry, but I think, nobody can help you with your financial situation. Why not ask your mum?
But it should be possible to eat bread and drink water, spend no holidays ... and use 5 digital cameras.

I would hate to tell ya this, but I was not asking for financial help. I old enough to sort out my own money problems thanks.
I guess the question kinda flew over your head, but I was asking if any one had a 2nd camera as a "backup" so to speek.

I have an S45 as Backup to a 10D.
very useful for quick snaps or if i want to take a wider shot without changing the lense on the 10D

Well, it depends on one's needs really. In my case I need to shoot transparencies for my Polaroid transfers. So I have an EOS 600 for that. Now I'm trying to find an early 2 megapixel camera that is suitable for Infrared. Hellishly difficult to find one of those early Nikons for example here in Sweden. But to I don't think any of these really are second cameras in the sense that I believe you mean.

It really depends on what you are doing. I have a D30 for a back up to my 10D. I have found that I use the D30 less and less, but just the same don't want be caught short.

When I bought my D60 a year or so ago, I kept my G2. I now have a 10D, and still have my G2. When I am in situations where using the big, heavy and EXPENSIVE DSLRs is not practical (lots of moving around, I am drunk, etc.), the G2 is a great alternative.

There are definitely times when you don't want to lug a DSLR around with you. If you can afford to keep it then I think you should, unless you can get a pocket camera that really does do everything you're going to want from it for a lot less than you can get for the old camera.
Rich.

If I don't want to carry some kilos DSLR & lenses, I take my 120g-camera

smaller than a box cigarettes ... and 1001 times healthier

I just got a 10D as I had tried the consumer level digital cameras and didn't get on with them. I just sold my previous digital so I could buy the speedlite 550ex - go on, treat yourself :)

I plan to keep my G2 because of the size - and because I love the macro abilitity - and because I really love the black and white setting!
It does both well and is easy to carry around all the time. Another plus - its unabtrusive in moments you don't want to draw attention to yourself. When using the 10D I've had people from camera clubs ask me what magazine I am shooting for..... darn thing looks good!

I use both G1 and 10D,
Handy, cause I can use the same batteries,
just one loader with me when tarvelling.
I use G1 when I need a lot of DOF or macro,
or I am just too lazy to change the lens.
The only thing I am missing with G1, is a wide agle lens. 28-xxx mm,
Nikon made that better with 5000 & 5400. :(
Still thinking, should I upgrade to G5 or 5400 ??
Hei Mr. Canon if You read this.............

I too have the G3 and wouldn't part with it for the world, unless of course I felt the need for the G5, I have a 10d arriving on Thursday and am very excited but also slightly reticent because of the 'softness' issue I read about so often on here.
However, I have a 16-35mm f2.8 L USM, and a 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS USM lens coming with it, although tonight I have noticed that a lot of people use the 50mm f1.4 and I am now wondering if I should have that one as well as an everyday lens. So much to choose from and so little knowledge!
Anyway, keep your G3 if you can, it is as other people say, so easy to carry about and use quickly etc.
Good luck.

I carry around a little sony cybershot as a backup to my 10D now... well not ALWAYS as a backup... the sony is small enough to fit in my pocket, so if I dont feel like lugging around a "big" camera, I bring that with me... if I am just hanging with friends or something.
Funny thing, though, I had my 10D one day at a party, and went home (of course took it with me) and left it at home cause I didnt want to have the camera... I just wanted to party. Anyways, I didnt have my sony with me either... best photo op of the night came up... it was a beautiful shaft of light, wish I had a camera. So I asked one of my friends if I could just borry his little digital (about the same as my sony)... but he wouldnt let me lol.

first off I would like to thank all those that have posted. since I am a couple of months away in getting the 10d :( I have got that time to decide.
At the end of the day I will let my habbits tell me. after getting the 10d and I find I don't use it then I might end up getting rid of it.
I can see merits of both points rasied in this threed. ohh well only time will tell.
On a different note, a friend of mine has just brought a 10d and he loves it. he has only had it for a 5 days and already taken over 1500 pictures. :)

Good plan. I kept reading this thread and thinking "only two?" I could understand questioning the utility of your 11th camera... :D Everyone is different in their photographic needs and interest.

Your G3 is bought and paid for. I would keep it as a second camera and learn to get the most from it. I use an S50 as my second camera. It fits in my pocket and, with 5 megapixels, takes some pretty amazing pictures.
I have had my 10D since March and am completely satisfied with the performance. I had a D30 and D60 which are now used by my grandson and son in that order. It seems that Canon programs these cameras to render soft images so you can sharpen to your own tastes. I don't find this a problem.
My most used lens is the 24-70 2.8L and the focus and results are great.
Good luck with your decision.
Regards, Fred
