Hello,

I have been using my G1 for over a year now and I am extremely happy with the exception of the chromatic fringing and being limited to 8x10 prints without the digits becoming too apparrent. I have read 1 review of the G2 and it was positive with the exception of these "diagonal jaggies". Any feedback from experienced G1 photgraphers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Darrin

The question is really whether the G2 improves things enough to justify the additional cost, and of course that is not entirely a technical question. As an example, even though the manufacturer of my car has released at least four improved versions since I bought mine, I haven't upgraded.

I did upgrade to G2 for the improved metering. I knew I would like this because I appreciated it on my S110. Additional G2 improvements are lowered CA, better color, positive AF lock indicator, and histogram display.

On the other hand, G1 still takes great pictures.

One thing you shouldn't worry about is the diagonal jaggies. As far as I know nobody has seen them in real life except when the image is displayed at an odd reduced size. Image software that displays images at percentages other than 50 or 25 percent may do a sloppy job of the temporary downsize and show jaggies. The solution is to do a proper bicubic downsample. Some programs can be configured to do this more time-consuming procedure when displaying images.

You can only blame the camera for what you see when viewing at 100%.

hi darrin, i had a G1 and it was a love/hate thing we had going. i loved the feature set and the pictures, for the most part, were fine. i hated the flat shape and the dials were hard for me to actuate. at one time, i thought 3.3-megapixels was all i would ever want. well, long story short, i now have a G2 and i LOVE the extra resolution and the controls feel much better to me. i still don't care for the plastic grip as it is still not big enough and it is slippery (the one on the upcoming nikon 5000 looks awesome). when i have my 420ex mounted on the camera, it's really hard to hold without it wanting to droop forward. my adjustment period from the G1 and G2 brought about a few surprises too. i was used to just picking up the camera and taking good pictures in P or auto mode. with the G2, it seems a lot more sensitive to camera shake and you have to be extra careful. it ALWAYS wants to push the aperature down to 2-something every chance it gets so you may be more inclined to shoot in Av mode and push it up to 4 to get more things in focus. the startup time is much improved...the wait for the G1 was interminable. the colors are much better too and the details it can pick up is much superior. personally, i wish canon would have made the G2 black to make it look more "professional" but that's a minor gripe.
