Pekka,
Is this forum going to officially be called
"Canon Digital Photography Forum" as read in the large logo in the upper left or will it be called "Digital Photography Forum" as noted else where?

Just curious to know if you can use the Canon logo up there?

I call it as Canon forum now, I'll hear from Canon marketing soon if it's not ok. :) They know about this for sure.

Is there any other way to say that this site primarily hosts Canon forums?

I guess there is no way to alter the name "Canon" to mean the same thing.

"Can-Pekka-on" perhaps :eyes

If Canon kicks up a stink they would probably not object if you called it the "Digital Photography Forum, using Canon cameras". In my humble opinion they will probably not offer any objections to the use of their trade mark, unless there is a groundswell of Anti-Canon messages!

Cheers,

Pekka, do you remember this thread  I did a quick search to see when and how the idea of this fantastic forum came to live.

Wow, there's more than a little bit of history in this thread. Apparently Canon didn't object.

belmondo, they did. But Pekka said that he's other option to name was:

"Digital Photography Forums of Happy Nikon Wanna Bees"

and the current name stuck.

5 years!

Using the logo is not permitted (although 90% of other websites use it without remorse) mainly because it can not be used inside text. Otherwise the name and logo is done so that the site is not "by Canon".

Canon loves this forum. Even if Chuck Westfall doesn't post here (at least not under his real name). :D

He'll start posrting under his real name after the announcement of new 20D++, 85L on steroids and 50 f/1.2 L. Until now he'll remain under his pseudonym "Dante".

Canon users forum?

It is best to have main (Google) keywords in the name: "canon" "photo(graphy)" "digital" "forum". You can see in Google how effective that is :)

canon forum (1st hit)
canon digital forum (1st hit)
canon camera forum (1st hit)
digital forum (5th hit)
canon digital (6th hit)
canon users (1st hit)

"Camera" would be good to have on the name, too, but this is not only camera related (i.e. tech forum) but big part of it is about photography which pleases me very much.

Why would Canon mine about this Forum think of all the free publicity it is getting for the L lenses. Think all the sell because members here recommend it to the NOObies and the regulars.

Just email them a copy of our "How much have you spent on Canon gear this year?" totals.:D

Why would Canon mine about this Forum think of all the free publicity it is getting for the L lenses. Think all the sell because members here recommend it to the NOObies and the regulars. It's brand protection. Like Kleenex or Xerox, they have to seem to be trying to maintain their "brand" identity, otherwise they run the risk of losing trademark rights. Allowing people to seem to be using "Canon" and "camera" interchangeably risks losing that identity. And I'm sure if you thought about it you could find a number of examples where people have posted questions about, or answers recommending, other camera brands than Canon. If Canon's lawyers were to decide that was a problem, they could demand that we stop using "Canon", "EOS", "PowerShot" in the forum titles. Whether they could make the demand stick in a court of law is irrelevant - I'm sure noone here would expect Pekka, even with the POTN Legal Defense Fund behind him, to try to defend against it.

I just read another article about the Union Pacific Railroad demanding licensing fees from model train manufacturers that manufacture models of UP equipment, or that of any railroad that has been absorbed into the UP systems. They are actually suing a company over that very issue right now. Sometimes, greed knows no bounds.

Actually it's not always greed, but as Jon said, brand protection.

Granted. But how is the railroad injured by a model train, and why are they entitled to............?:mad:

Oh never mind.

Once lawyers get involved, better off not doing it. I think this works very well. After all, I found this place and I don't surf very much at all. But I think we should all write to Canon and tell them how much we love their products and ask if they can provide some kind of conference for us in Hawaii and give out free gifts. :)

A number of Aircraft manufactors tried doing the same thing with model plane makers, I have no idea how succesful it was, but it made "Silly American news story of the week" story here.

I'd consider it a "silly American news story" as well, despite living in the US. Same with the model train issue and such.

Back in the day when Volkswagen had a good hold on their market ('60s & '70s), they would periodcally go after successful independent repair shops that used a slogan like 'Volkswagen Repairs' and force them to change it to 'Repairs for Volkswagens'. The deal was that they didn't want folks to think that these shops were providing factory-authorized repairs. The lawyers had it pretty well down, and all the ones I know of had to change their signs.

More recently, some of the auto manufacturers went through a phase of requiring anyone making images or models of their cars to get permission and/or pay royalties. My understanding is that they were fairly successful as well.

In the case of the railroads, maybe they are trying to leverage their brand.

This does go through phases.

Have Fun,

I bet there are lawyers out there who have lists of frivilous law suits just waiting for when they have a quite month, or need a little publicity.
