Underwater photography - advice please

I want to take up underwater photography and I have a Canon Ixus V 2.1 which I'm thinking of using for underwater use. Ikelite housing is in the range of $500 so before investing in this, has anyone used an Ixus V and/or the Ikelite housing? Would be interested to know if it worth investing in alternative camera/housing instead (although preferably not)

I can vouch for the Ikelite housings, they are first class and a good value as well. Haven't used that camera. I'm a large boat divemaster and have worked with several pros who use the Ikelites and never heard a problem from them either. Pay close attention every time you open the housing and be sure all those o-rings are siliconed (not too much) and seated properly. I've seen many a camera flooded by not taking care during assembly.
