View Full Version : 350D + Bulb + Remote + Mirror Lockup = Impossible?

Hi All,

I have a 350D, and am beginning to get into astrophotography. I have attempted to hook my camera up to a telescope, but notice that the vibrations caused by the mirror swinging up often vibrate the camera to the point of blurring pictures. Naturally, I thought using the Mirror Lockup feature would alleviate this problem.

However, I am not sure how I can use Mirror Lockup while taking a Bulb exposure (or any length exposure for that matter) while using the Canon RC1 remote. Is this even possible to do with the remote? (*crosses fingers*) Thanks in advance. :)

You can try it. See if it works.

I don't know about the RC-1, but I have the RC-5 and that works just fine with mirror lockup and any exposure. Pressing the remote button is just like pressing the shutter button except in the case of bulb where you press it a second time to turn off the sensor and return the mirror.

Without the remote you can set mirror lockup and time delay and it will lockup the mirror when you press the shutter button and take the photo 2 seconds later. Unfortunately, this won't help much with bulb since you have to hold the button down and this will likely jiggle the camera, but works well enough for 30 seconds or less.

Alright, here's a bit of an update:

With the RC-1, I switched the remote to the two second delay option, and everything seems to be working fine. I guess there just isn't a way to have the remote click once to lock the mirror, then click again to take the picture. However, a two second delay should be enough to minimize vibrations during my astrophotography sessions.

I didn't have a problem with any of my other shots. I used the remote, mirror-lockup without any problem. Clicked once to remove the mirror, clicked and held again (with the timer on as well) and it went, after 2 seconds for as long as I held it.
