Anyone here ever try to make your own camera cases? Im usually pretty decent at makin stuff, and I got a girlfriend who can sew just about anything, so im tempted to give it a try, but im not sure if i want to put my expensive equipment at risk. Maybe im a moron, but i thought id see if anyone here had attempted that.

I made my own from a luggage case. I simply couldn't find a case that would carry what I wanted, so i made one. It basically holds everything in my sig except my flash bracket.
Case $30
Foam $40
Silky Material $10
Velcro $15
A case that fits everything perfectly... priceless.
Oh, and that's Aussie dollars, so take a bit off that for UK/USA etc.
Sorry for the dodgy pic... it was a really quick one.

Rob, you've put a lot of work into that case! Looking good.
I hope there is another strap to back up the zip around lid. Zips are not trustworthy when holding back weight.
What do you use on the move, say covering a race riot (LOL) or fun run?

Wow! That looks great!
Did you get the foam at a craftstore?
I bet it's easy to take on flights too

Carzee,
Whenever it is on the move, there are a few straps that i put around it to be sure, especially if it is going in luggage on planes or busses etc... but everything is pretty snug so if it is getting dragged around at a wedding or something it is really secure anyway.
As for fast paced stuff... i have a small Canon bag that i bought a long time ago, which basically just holds a lens and accessories. I keep my bodies and important stuff on me (partially for convenience, partially because it doesn't fit in the bag!).

Thanks Mike,
The foam came from Clark Rubber. Sorry, don't know what an equivelant would be in your part of the world. It was pre-packaged as a Yoga mat or something - which was more than i needed, but made it really cheap.
And yes, very easy to take on flights. Much easier than my old aluminium case i used to use.

My 2c at home made...
The other Sunday was the big Motorbike Toy Run. I had to be able to move thru the crowd looking for shots etc.
Cond: Daylight and dry - if it was dark or wet I may have had to totally rethink...
Security: well, they're bikies and family crowd types. Had to keep stuff on me without getting in the way or occupying the hands.
Beltpack: 3 pouches for a lens, batts, filters, flash, CF, blower brush, etc stuff. I brought very well stitched nylon, especially the belt loops. Newswear. Its quick access, velcro.
Shoulder bag: It was a Laptop bag I got 3 years back. I got it out of the garage (aka The Purchase Archives) and checked it over. I tried a body with the 135 tele on it and it fits with plenty of room around. Plenty of access. The shoulder strap is wide and very well stitched at the joins to the bag. And all the bag seams are reinforced. I gutted it of the laptop partitions and stuff. The opening has a zipper top with 2 backup clip belts over the top. It has 2 zippered pouches for 3.5" disks etc out front. (Remember 720k and 1.44mb floppies?)
The day cometh: I operated 2 camera combs. A Tele and a WAngle.
I did not want both camera combos on my neck... which I used to do with my Olympus OM-1 FSLRs. So one combo is in the shoulder bag, the top unzipped, simply secured shut using one quick release clip. I combo is in the hand.
Okay, time to do a quick swap over of the combos.
I have a POTN neck strap with a ring thingy to park the combo in hand while I get out the other combo from inside the shoulder bag. I use hand straps on both bodies, and its the handstrap I use to clip onto the ring thingy.

I can attach and detach that thingy single handed. It proved safe and fast and comfortable to move with. Thats all I did, kept swapping combos till I was finished.
One further thing. At times, taking various shots, I remembered to check and ask myself, "Would a monpod be good/better here?" Not one time. And I was thinking Santa might spring for a monopod. But it was a sunny sunny day...
While one body/lens is being used, the other body/lens is in the top opening nylon bag.

Nice work! If i am trying to pack light, I just strap up my belt cases for my 24-70 and 70-200 and swap them in an out. They are deep enough to leave the body attached, and fit very snug so they won't slip out. I am still very careful with them though. Don't want any expensive mishaps.
