View Full Version : NYC POTN Meet!
Ronald S. Jr.
15th of December 2005 (Thu), 21:57
Ok, who's up for it! I know there's plenty of us in and around NYC, so let's meet up! Has to be one of the best places to shoot. Someone more familiar with the city will have to arrange it or tell us a good spot to meet...I'm just not THAT familiar with it! Love to see the city again though!
It's been discussed that it should be spring..maybe early spring. Want it to be warm enough, but I don't want to wait too long! :-)
Ok, NY POTN'ers, who's with me?!

I love Fifth Avenue at Christmas. I will be by the big tree or at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Wednesday near noon. Going to see Phantom so I thought I'd walk around Broadway. I hope there's no snow. It's really gross this time of year, but the displays are fantastic. I've skated at Rockefeller Center and that's really fun. Also there are amazing buildings, Chrysler Building, and my Dad worked at the Plaza Hotel and I remember that building is beautiful inside. The inside of Macy's on 34th Street is definitely worth seeing. I say, go for it.

i would suggest a few places for a photo shoot .. the west side hwy is always best and have alot of good sites from battery park all the way up to the Intrepid ... and the best part is that there's a walk / bike / roller blade path with street vendors and such .. so all shooting styles should flow well and its great for large amount of ppl .. thats just my .02
but definitely count me in for this event ! .. i live right outside of manhatten .. so i can be there in 30 mins

Hey, I can't believe I missed this thread. Life here has been quite busy for the past few days. I'm all for this meet, I am available most weekends (with at least a week's notice, sometime's even less). It's high time POTN members in the area meet up.
We can do a series of meets this spring/summer, as NYC is definitely too big to be tackled in one day. I propose that we tour Lower Manhattan first, such as Canal Street, Brooklyn Bridge, City Hall, etc. We can time our route so that we will be in Chinatown by lunchtime and eat in one of the excellent and inexpensive Asian restaurants there. Looks like an adventure in the making.
By the way, is anyone going to the New Year's Eve celebration at Times Square? I might be there.
Ronald S. Jr.
25th of December 2005 (Sun), 15:15
I think I'm gonna try and make it down. Never been there, and I'd like to see it. Only thing that worries me is with hundreds of thousands of people, I'd be awfully worried about my gear!

How about having B&H's House of Pain host a gathering of POTN members at their store. We could all meet there and if there was enough of us coming, perhaps they would offer those that showed up a discount on Canon equipment for the day.

25th of December 2005 (Sun), 16:15
Hmm...not bad! ;-) Obviously, I'd like to go to B&H. I've never been there.

25th of December 2005 (Sun), 16:18
You know, I was thinking...when I go, I plan on staying for a few days instead of coming and going. Is there some kind of thing where hotels will give reduced rates if a bunch of people stay in the same place? We gotta make this thing official. Do we want winter, spring, or summer? How long do we want to stay? Anyone wanting to stay for a few days at least? The NY is huge...we'll need days to cover it. That's why I'd like to see if anyone would want to stay for like a week. Let's get this going!
tsw910
27th of December 2005 (Tue), 11:17
this sounds great working from downtown to chinatown and up to B&H ... i am so up for this ! ... i can't wait .. anytime is good for me winter, spring or summer !
as for the hotel .. i can look into it .. but if you guys want to stay in manhattan, its gonna be pretty expensive ..
Ronald S. Jr.
27th of December 2005 (Tue), 13:54
if you guys want to stay in manhattan, its gonna be pretty expensive ..
Yep, I figured that much. I'm not too into spending $1000+ for a week of hotel stays, so I'd stay with my uncle in W. Redding, CT and take the half hour- 40 min. train ride into the city each day. Like Ricky R. used to do. 8)

Alright, everyone should post when they're free starting late Jan.- Early Feb., or whenever you want to do it, and tell how long you'd want to stay. Some might want to make it just a day thing, but I think I'd rather take a few days to cover all the good points in the city. Not to mention probably spending a whole day in B&H  Basically, I plan on staying a good week or so, since I won't have to get a hotel.

I would be up for it. Am 30 to 40 minutes from downtown Manhattan. Would rather do it in warmer weather though. Oh, and if you do the Empire State Building, you get a coupon from B&H for a free gift with a purchase. I still have them from my last trip to the observation deck. Bought a "nifty fifty" at B&H and got a small vinyl backpack as the "gift". B&H was pretty interesting to see.

BB, you read my mind about Chinatown. My suggestion would be Big Wong's, but certainly are a lot of choices in that area.
About whatever route you guys are interested in, keep in mind that snapping pictures will slow you down considerably. If we went from, say, the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn bridge to B&H in a day, that would be about 3 miles of city walking. Also, B&H is closed on Saturdays.
Check out this thread, too:

Ok, let's get the ball rolling! The annual Chinese New Year celebration is coming soon, and it is a colorful event (or series of events actually) that would lend well to photographs. Who's down for it? The Lunar New Year celebration actually lasts around 2 weeks, from January 29 to February 12. I will be there on several days, but these are the days of note:
January 29, Sunday, Firecracker Ceremonies at 12 and 2 pm at various locations in Manhattan Chinatown, lots of dragons, lions and unicorn dance troops cavorting.
February 5, Sunday, 1 to 5 pm, the Annual Chinese Lunar New Year Parade will be held. (It's a parade, need I say more?)
February 12, Sunday, 10am to 6pm, Dragon Parade marking the end of Chinese Lunar New Year Celebrations. There will be up to 15 Dragon troupes participating.
In all likelihood I will be there, and it would be a good time to meet POTN'rs in the area. For those who can't make it, fear not. I am thinking of setting up a POTN meeting every month or so, with a different shooting location every time.
So who's interested?

But $22 seems pretty unnecessary for me since I currently only have the kit lens. Solely for identification would be ridiculous.

As for the cell phone idea, it was more if we were in the same area but couldn't locate each other, not if you're lost in some random part of the city.

Can someone think of a good place to meet, and give the exact address/intersection?
Ok, let's meet up on January 29, Sunday. The parade is from 12 to 2, so let's meet at around 11:30 am, outside the Starbucks at the corner of Canal St. and Center St. This is near the Canal Subway Station and one can't miss it. Bring appropriate clothing (for the weather) and as we will be walking, comfortable shoes. I would suggest bringing a bottle of water unless you want to buy overpriced mineral water. Bring a sandwich for lunch, or we can go to a restaurant for lunch, in which case bring some lunch money. $10 is more than enough, I'm thinking if it is cold a bowl of hot noodle soup (Vietnamese pho, sround$5,comes to mind) would be really great.
And don't forget your camera! I hope more will come.

Also, I was wondering if anyone else may be staying a bit longer than just a few hours, and might want to chum along with me so that I don't get lost alone. Anyone else gonna stay for a few days?
Man, I'm not sure. It might be cheaper to find a hotel at Jersey side, and go into the city via the PATH train. I'm afraid I'm not much help in this area. I'll ask around though.

I wonder if they have hotels in Tarrytown. You can take the train to the city to grand central. I'm going to do that. The ticket off-peak is $7.50 I think. It's only a 40 minute train ride. The hotels in Tarrytown are likely MUCH cheaper than the city, though I can't confirm that.

I stayed here about this time last year and got great 'Winter' rates in a superb location on Lexington Ave:

Well worth checking out a few of the many hotel discount sites online. Dunno about NYC but hotels are usually cheaper over weekends because there are fewer business travellers so they go for the tourist/weekender crowd. Of course, Chinese New Year will make it harder to find a nice place at a good price.

Well Condyk, that place looks just fine, but at $400 or so per night, I think I'll look around. I don't need a fancy room with 3 phone lines, a 24" flat screen TV, and a private veranda to get a good night's sleep. I just need a bed. I'm not looking for luxury, I'm looking to not have to leave the same day I get there. I want to stay about 3 days. I just don't have $1500 for that. If I had that much, I'd skip the trip and buy my 100-400L over again.

You're looking at rack rates I suspect! I paid equivelent to around £65/nightwith breakfast last February ... as I say, worth checking the hotel discount booking sites for last minute offers once you have the date fixed. I do that every week for London hotels and never pay more than £70 for 4* and that's what I do if I travel to NYC, or anywhere. Hotels.com is Ok for a start tho' not the cheapest, search around ... just trying to help ;)

Mind telling where you found that hotel at that rate? Is there a particular site you use, that isn't exclusive to UK?
condyk
16th of January 2006 (Mon), 03:16
I have no idea which I used now. It had more of a US bent than the UK ones I more often use. Any search for new york hotels will bring up several booking sites. If you know approx. which area to stay in then locating a range of options in that area and a range of prices will be quite easy.

If you want to stay near Chinatown, I would suggest looking for a hotel in the lower east side. On a walk to lunch yesterday, I came upon this place (http://offsoho.com/home.html).
It's about 8 blocks walk to where BB wants to meet on Canal and Center in a pretty hot part of town.
You might also check out some places in Brooklyn, might be some cheap alernatives there.

Hi guys,
I don't post here that much, but I am a pretty regular lurker. I happen to live here in Staten Island, NY, but work in "the city" (what we boroughs folks call Manhattan). I would love to join all of you, but I am actually out of town until the 27th and I'm sure wifey would like to have me around that weekend (not to mention I'm still at church at 11:30 AM on a Sunday).
In any case, have lots of fun! I really wish I could make it out. I used to work around Chinatown for something like 6 years and it will be quite a great photo day, I'm sure.
I'll keep my eyes and ears open around here for other chances to get together here in NYC with some of the good folks from this board. Email me if you're local or planning on visiting and want to say hi.

For those of you that can't make it on a particular weekend, don't worry about whether something will happen later. BottomBracket mentioned way back in this thread that he wants to get together often so people that can't make one weekend can make the next meet. I'll be there on the 29th and BB will be there too, from what he's posted.
If it ends up being just two or three of us, that is no sweat, we'll post our pics for the day and then we'll work out the next meet and grow the club that way. Main idea here is that we won't shut down for the year and hide in our apartments for a year until next winter.
Cheers,
James

This is a picture of the street that separates Little Italy and Chinatown in NYC. I was there in May with my son's high school orchestra. I spent the afternoon with my sister eating at a really little "hole in the wall" restaurant that made rice soup. It was wonderful. I will be so jealous of all of you in NYC. I am from Hong Kong and speak fluent Cantonese still. I've never been to Chinatown at New Years. It was always too dangerous when I was young. Now it is a lot safer and apparently, not as loud. The city doesn't allow firecrackers anymore, but people still burn them. Have fun!

NYC is just too big to be tackled in one day, a week, or a year. I think we in the area should get together often and shoot one particular locale on each day. If there are any out of towners who are coming to the city, we can adjust our plans to fit the traveler. We can certainly make an April meet!

Sounds like a good idea to me. By April, I might have my 70-200 f/4L! :D
A monthly or every other month meet would fit me since all I have to do is get $7.50 and call my sister, but for those that plan to spend the weekend there, it may be a bit of an expensive weekend especially to be held so often. Anyway if they're held so often, it may not be vital to go to every single meet but to the one that most fits and interests you.

I held a meet for the NY International Auto Show last Saturday. It wasn't very interesting though and many couldn't show up or chose to go on other days. With the coming weather, I'm sure there will be POTN meets all the time. I've got plenty of ideas in mind as long as everyone is available on the same day.
By the way, the "En Why" gave me a real chuckle.

I'm about an hour and 20 minutes outside of Manhattan. Maybe a bit more by train but roughly thats about how far I am north of Manhattan. So if you let me know a week or so in advance or really when ever you can maybe we can do something. I'm pretty busy with work so I can't make any promises but we'll keep in touch.

Hah, of course everyone around thought it was ridiculous just for the way he looked. We photographers can laugh at the other aspect of it: he was using his monopod when it couldn't be more unnecessary. Bright sunshine, an f/1.8 lens, and street shooting. The monopod was so unnecessary!
You and your wife ought to come to the city every now and then Zacker! Not only could we have fun shooting, there are many other things to see. If you make some time, I'm sure you won't regret it. Heck, you might even become as addicted as my cousin and I as we find ourselves in Manhattan every weekend (for the past three weekends). And guess what? We're going back this Saturday!
I guess we have more time to do these sorts of things since we're kids. I'm 16 years old and my cousin 23. We couldn't have a better time shooting in NYC. Money might not be there (hence my one lens), but pictures aren't lenses.

We might come in from time to time to catch a Rangers game in the winter and I might be in for a couple of Yankee's games... that is still depending on if I can score some free tix...lol, even then i prolly wouldnt bring the cam, prolly couldnt get it into the garden or stadium. I have to try to get there just to shoot.. that would be cool. My cousin and I always go to B&H just to play with toys. We're never serious of buying anything, but of course, the staff don't know that.
You could always check the rules for the stadium. Most sports restrict lenses of a certain focal length. I'm sure there are ways to fool security. I even wonder if they know how to find out the focal length of a lens.
It's supposed to rain like nuts here actually! So where are we going in NYC? We're going back to the auto show so I can take some real pictures this time. I'll be using my cousin's Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 rather than my 70-200. I might even throw on my kit lens if I need something wider. I'll probably be posting those pictures in the car forum.
If only we had a weather sealed 1D and lens, nothing would stop us! Except for the fact that we would be homeless.
