You like it. That's all that matters given the subject (girlfriend) and when it was taken (on vacation).

But since you asked, I'll offer an opinion.

Not seeing more of her facial features compromised any advantages of the tighter crop you have here. Including the left eyebrow would have helped for instance...and also not having the blurred out hand dominating the foreground. Had you not explained that she was biting her fingernails, it would not have been clear why the hand was there in the first place.

To me, these are the types of pictures you put in an album and have fun describing the circumstances for friends and family looking at the photos of your Cuba vacation. For that purpose, this picture is perfect.

Cheers

When we look at pictures of ourselves, we either like them, or we don't.

I took a candid shot of my sister-in-law last summer that I thought was great. It captured her natural smile, was sharp, perfectly exposed, well-composed, with a creamy bokeh of complimentary colors. I spent extra time post-processing, tweaking levels and such, then had it printed.

She took one look and threw it in the trash. Go figure.

Wow. That's way harsh...
I hope in all other respects, she's a nicer person.

Print it and give it to her again. j/k :) :)

She is actually a very nice person.

I like how the hand, being dominant in the foreground, draws me to her eyes. Even though this isn't "following the rules" I like it...we are meant to break rules sometimes! ;)

I think the shot is so-so. I'm not crazy about it and I can understand why she isn't either. It's amazing how we see ourselves as opposed to how the camera sees us. We have to develop better cameras I guess.

I don't live in the states, I kind of vary my life etween England (Leeds) and Germany (Munich)...where the GF lives.

I think she is against the picture because I didn't Heal the wrinkles out :) But for me it shows her at her most natural, most of the time she is smiling and has a very photogenic smile, for a change I caught her more natural.

I am also blown away by the Canon 50mm 1.8, £75 well spent!

well, what were you thinking by posting the photo even if your gf didn't like it? she might actually have a reasoning as to why she doesn't like it.

for instance, the photo overall is not pleasing. i am sure she is mch more beautiful than this photo represents. i think as photogaphers or wannabe's like me. we should try to represent ourselves better by posting photos that is pleasing to the subject we are shooting. everyone else's opinion is secondary.
thats my subjective commentary.

What do I think? If she doesn't like it and found out that thousands of people are looking at it... she probably won't be too happy!!

So who is right, the subject or the artist? There are many factions of photography...Landscape...photo journalism...travel...porn...right down to surrealism. So who draws the line as to what is right or wrong, what is good or bad? Who decides?

I like it, so there...and thanks to all who answered, critisism makes me better at what i do!
