Here is a picture I took using my father's D30 with 70-200mm F2.8 Lens and 1.4X extender.
When reviewing the pics I've taken, this one reminded me of some of the pop-outs I've seen on this forum and decided to try it myself.

Very good action shot and the pop-out works very well indeed.
I wonder if a drop-shadow including the arm and leg
would make it even more impressive.
Just a thought.
Well done.

Thanks Eland,
If I get the time, I will try to add a shadow. I have to figure out how to do that first, though.
I was cutting out an image of my daughter to put on a birthday invitation when I suddenly realized how to do a pop-out. I just need more time playing with Adobe and trying different things.

I like this photo Michael, good job...the framing is neat as well.

Well done. I like the motion of the "foot out" and "arm out" along the Left(bottom) to Right(top) diagonal. I am not sure that I would have thought of that! Clever.
Did you use a tablet to select these limbs?

Still being a novice with Photoshop, I don't fully understand the question.
When I first saw the image on my computer, after uploading it, I saw what I wanted for the pop out. Once I understood what cut to new layer meant, the light in my head turned on.
The first layer I created was the central image, a simple rectangle. Is this what you mean by tablet?
I then cut the leg out from the background into a second layer.
Next step was to cut the arm from the backround into a third layer
Last step was to pick a color and fill in the background layer.

hah, naw..
a tablet is a type of input device that allows you to use a special pen-shaped stylus as your mouse..and thus makes it easier to select stuff, repaint in lost objects, and the like...
the most popular tablet company is wacom: www.wacom.com
I have one of their graphire2's and love it.

MICHAEL
I too am a novice with PS. I would have tried your aproach. But as the above post suggests, some members may use a tablet that makes tracing an object easier. No matter. The result is just great.
Thanks.

Hi Michael - good work. The pop-out is not overdone, just enough to make the image fun. As eland suggested you can consider a drop shadow to add to the effect next time.

Oh, a Tablet PC. Doh :O
When I first read the comment I was thinking software/technique, not hardware. Thanks for the clarification. :)
