How to capture text?

I've been trying to capture a small amount of text from a book to post it on the web, but to no avail (I don't posess a scanner). Most of the time the flash covers the whole screen and returns a very bright picture.

So is it possible?

Yes. Don't use the flash. Instead use a bright light source and mount the camera on a tripod or take the book outside. If you must use the flash, point it away from the page. Point it at the ceiling or the wall. Or use a diffuser.
