Noisy Image Stabilizer Motor????

I just purchased a 70-200 f2.8 IS L lens and it seems that the IS motor is a bit loud and "crunchy". With IS turned on, when you press the shutter 1/2 way, you hear this noise for about 1 or 1.5 seconds. With IS turned off there's no noise. Is this normal? I never heard this on my other IS lens, EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM. Did I get a bum lens?

I can hear a noise which isn't quite a "click" but close as soon as you activate the IS (by focusing or half-pressing the shutter) and then an audible electric whine which is just at the upper range of my hearing... there's another "click" (which might be described as a very soft "crunch", I suppose) after 1.5-2sec, which I take to be the IS turning off again.

This is the 17-85 IS USM I'm speaking about here.

Yes, mine also makes "noises." Think about it this way: I like the noise. Gives me instant feedback that I have IS on. I have shot many pix thinking the IS was on when it wasn't (those butons are easily moved.) None of the pix came out.

Thanks Jim G and gasrocks. I just went to one of the local photo stores and listened to the same lens. Sure enough it makes the same noises. Thanks again for replying. I feel much better now.

I just picked up a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS. With IS on and the shutter pressed 1/2 way the noise continues until I take the photo, sometimes after. Is that normal?? If I were to hold the shutter 1/2 way for a long period of time the noise persists. Is that normal?

I think that mine only makes the "crunchy" sound for about a second and then stops. Unfortunately, the lens is at my office, otherwise I'd try it right now for you. I should be at my office later today. I'll give it another test.
