Hello all

I'm getting back into photography after many years away. I have a 350D which is giving me good results, I'm interested to hear any opinions from you all as to if a 20D would be a good choice to either replace the 350D or just become my 1st choice.

Comments very much appreciated

I'm currently looking to upgrade from the 300D, and have looked at both the 350D and the 20D.

For me, the 20D wins in a walk, primarily because of the physical size of the camera. I don't have the smallest hands in the world, and I like to have something to grab on to.

Both have improved low light performance over the 300D, so that's less of a concern between the two. My understanding is that the 350D and the 20D are comparable in that department. I shoot, mainly, live bands, so I need better performance than what the 300D offers.

If I had smaller hands, I'd probably go with the 350D but, like I said, I've got big hands, and the 350D is just too small for my hands.

Of course, I haven't tried it with the grip yet...

I'm right there with ya Steve. Honest, I have to admit that I absolutely hate the look and small footprint of the 350D. Good camera as it may be, I just don't see myself owning one. 20D just feels more *right* in my hands.

It rocks with the grip.
My move up will be to the 5D.

How close are you to upgrading Steve?
Dante King is looking for a used 300D. He's got a post in Marketplace

Probably within the month. I'm not sure I want to sell the 300D just yet, though. Would be nice to have a backup...

The 350D is packed with amazing technology and can make awesome pictures, but I think Canon erred by cramming it into such a small body. It was uncomfortable for me to hold, even for a few minutes with a small lens.

Sure, you can get a grip for it. But that makes the cost difference vs. a 20D less significant.

Personally, I'd be going with a grip on the 20D, too.

What did you think of the 350D with a grip attached, if you had the chance to try that?

What did you think of the 350D with a grip attached, if you had the chance to try that?I didn't try it with the grip. But it's more than just a size issue. The side grip on the XT has more of a sharp bevel on the side next to the lens, rather than the more rounded design of the 300D or the 20D.

With my favorite lens (Sigma 70-200 F2.8 ), flash unit, body and batteries, the combo adds up to more than 5 pounds (2.3 kg). When you carry that around all day, minor differences in grip design make a big difference in comfort!

The 20D is a better camera than the 350D, but it does not offer that many additional features. If I had a 350D I would wait to see what the next generation of the 20D has to offer before considering an upgrade.

Thanks, Scott.

I'm going to be upgrading from the 300D, and I've been looking at the 20D for some time.

By the way, I notice you're in Kelowna. I was up there on business in September. Man, you're sure not at a loss for great places to shoot:

If I can work it right, I should get up there once or twice a year. Lake Okanangan offers some great opportunities...
