Hi

I'm new to photography, but am wanting to learn a bit by show and tell I guess...

I've posted a of pic here that I took with my ixus400.
I quite like the photo, but in post-processing I was trying to make the most of it by cropping to suit the eye.

The first image is the uncropped, and the second is my attempt at cropping. [both reduced in size for ease of downloading]. could people please comment on this for me.

Please note I didn't have a lot of time to compose the image as i was waiting in the traffic lights, and as you can see they were just about to change.

regards
Mikey

Well I do not see any quick cropping solution.

The prize here is the sun, and its underexposed foreground. The viewer wants the image to deliver even more interest. However, on close, the sun is stuck with a somewhat underwhelming supporting cast.
- the houses offer limited interest (but together with the sun suggest serenity.
- the street lights just seem to go against this flow and say urban, urban, urban.

Nice color but the image is limited by the available subject matter.

Thanks for your comments :-)

I think the cathedral to the left of the sun adds more to the image for myself, due to knowing what the structure is.

I agree with your comments... if only i'd parked up and moved to the other side of the lamposts ;-)
thanks again

The pic, as already stated, has no great pictorial value on its own but is quite interesting.
As part of a picture story it could be ok.
Keep it for that reason and as a yardstick to mark
your future progress.

Your image size for this site is fine.
If they are too large or if people show too many at once,
viewers (myself included ) just hit the STOP button
and go elsewhere.

Welcome to the site. Have a happy stay

PS I prefer the first, uncropped image.
It has more of interest than the second.

again, thank you for your comments. :-)

I will keep trying and see where I get to... going to France soon, so hoepfully i'll bring back a few pics worth getting some critique on too.

Thanks for your reply.
France is interesting and different.
Make sure that you use MOOD in your images.

Try to avoid taking shots around midday when the light
is blue and uninteresting.
Early morning, late afternoon and evening as you showed here
are the best.

If you can get mood into your pics as you did with your sunset,
then you are doing more than just recording what is in front of you.

Have a great trip
