Seems like you are working with some serious low DOF. I bet that makes hockey a bear to shoot. Were these over at the sportsplex? I may shoot over there soon, a couple at our church as a 10 year old that does figure skating there in the early-early mornings and I may try to get some shots for them. It will be interesting. Did you also shoot this with your new Mk II? Did you see a big difference in it's abiltiy to focus in venues like this? Cheers.

Mark --

these were shot at Raleigh Ice House. There, and Cary, are the two darkest ice venues in North Carolina. The lighting is a vile mix of flourescent and tungsten. Exposures were 1/400, ISO1600, f2. I haven't used the 1D at ISO3200 yet.

the sportsplex lighting is much better, but still not great. Typical exposures there are ISO1600, f2.8, 1/400.

The Mk II focus is much faster than the 20D, and it doesn't get fooled by slow-moving high contrast items in the background the way the 20D does. Custom function 20 lets you set AI-servo sensitivity to picking up other objects, I've got it set to "slow" for this and it works very well. With CF-20 set to "fast" it replicates the 20D's problem.

Figure skating is fun to shoot. They often don't turn on all the lights, so it can be darker than hockey, and there are interesting colored lights and mirror-balls. I'd use a strobe for fill.

hybridwire -- thanks. you picked out one of the few guys on the team who really skates head-up.
