This is our 7 1/2 month old daughter's first Christmas and we decided to get some shots of her playing with a present in front of the Christmas Tree. What do you think?

XT, Tamron 28-75 XR DI, 48mm, f/4, 1/60, iso 400. Some minor post processing and resizing.

She is just precious. You captured the joy of Christmas in a child!

I hope she isn't unwrapping new camera equipment? :) Nice picture by the way.

Great picture. If she is like my children they have more fun with the bows, paper and boxes than the gifts.

She is, as you can tell by her drool.

She crawls to the presents whenever she gets a chance and plays with the bows, and she throws small boxes around.

I think she's drooling over the Canon 5D she thinks is in the box.
Wonderful family memory. Thanks for sharing it.

Anybody else have anything to say. I would like to have a little more info so that Christmas day will yield pictures that are as good as they can be.

This is a great shot for a number of reasons. Firstly, you're on the same plain as your daughter - you're not looking down on her. Secondly, she's in focus, but there's no overly distracting background - just the tree, but it's blurred enough to not be distracting. Finally, your daughter is well lit, but you use a fast enough shutter speed, that the background is not lit as well, again keeping the focus on your daughter.

Have a lovely time with her - it's a very special time, and she's a gorgeous little girl.

Thank you very much. I hope to get more pictures like this one on Christmas.

This is a good angle. If it were me I'd be using the 50mm or the Tameron 28-75 Christmas morning. Open up the aperture and try to get as much of the natural light in as possible.

If you do use a flash try not to make it the dominant light source. Use it to brighten up the background and fill in your subject. I am by no means a flash expert, so if you search around in the lighting section you should be able to get a lot of great info there. I'd shoot in M or AV mode. The flash should do it's thing for you there.

turn on the tree lights... It's a great backdrop. With a large enough aperture you'll blur it out and your subject should pop out a little more for you.

You have a very cute kid, so good pictures shouldn't be a problem :)

[EDIT] Keep a washcloth or towel handy to wipe drool away. It will reflect the flash if you use one.

Thank you for the advice. We will probably shoot in Av modeand have the same lights on as those in this picture. For now we will be using the built in flash and the washcloth or burp rag will be readily available.:p

The higher the ISO and the longer the shutterspeed, the more light you'll get into the background. I don't have the 350d but I have read that it is pretty decent up to 800 ISO. Merry Christmas!

400 is the highest we have used so far and like the results. Since she tends to move around quite abit the shutterspeed will have to stay pretty quick but we may have to go up to ISO 800.

Thank you.... She's my baby... they grow so fast, but those tiny faces are absolutely precious! Gotta catch them when we can! ;)

ps... I get terrible results with my 20D at ISO 800, so I avoid it. Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but anything over 400 is so noisy.

Here are some ISO 800 pics on my 20d, a few of them have noise reduction but not all. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=120137

Here is 800 ISO with my 300d http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=68388&highlight=800+ISO
no noise reduction in that one.

I'm not sure where the 350d fits into the mix but I get good results. I have have very nice results at 1600 ISO with my 20d.

I would be happy with any of those shots but to be safe I will test it tonight or tomorrow night.

If you can try to set it up just as it will be on Christmas morning. See if you can get some window light etc.

The room has 2 East facing windows and the sun will most likely be coming up over my shed about the time we commence to opening. One of the windows is blocked by our Christmas tree but we should get some good light if the weather cooperates. Maybe I should wait until Saturday for some test shots.

Here is an example of balancing flash and room light. I used strobes for this, but you could do something similar with a flash.
