Beautiful color! The images are tack sharp, and the action is well captured. And that center is absolutely frightening! What lens did you use for these?

Hey Liza - I used two lenses (sigma 70-200 f2.8 and Canon EF 85 f1.8), but I think all of these came from the Canon lens. They both work very nicely though the 85 is my most trusted.
Tour... ~ this is all natural lighting in Cameraon - no strobes required. I accidently bumped the dial part way through, hence the poor exposure on the first shot. But typically with the 85 mm it is ISO 800, f2.0, 1/1000 to 1/250, and with teh f2.8 it is ISO 1600, f.2.8 @ around 1/800 or there abouts.
As an aside, UPS just delivered a box from B&H for my wife.... Christmas is looking up this year.
Thanks both for looking and commenting.

#1 is a stonker of a shot... in fact, they're all top banana.
Wonder if #1 would benefit further from a tighter, vertical crop? Hmmm... maybe... maybe not...

Gavin - If you have ideas on better crops... please edit away.... would love to learn from you...
... and that goes for anyone who has another or better idea. Editing is not my strength.
That particular shot was done raw... and is a bit blown out. I need to revisit it again. I was just happy to recover it after a file on my card was corrupted.

I see where you were going with it.... it also get rid of that horrible blown out area. I will reconvert and see if with detail back in it makes a difference. I have a talent for taking odd shaped shots. The fact that the hands are extending beyond focus is a little bothersome too... so close... and still not just totally there yet.
here is another try.....

Kinda looks faded - doesn't it.

Awesome shots Mark. Very nice. College would be a blast to shoot. But alas I'm regulated to HS right now. Speaking of which, I need to go shoot some of that here soon.

Very nice work I'll be shooting a mens game there next year (12/30/06).
I always try and get the Face, Number, Ball and the Basket/Net (if its in the paint). Blur, I like it when it shows motion like in the fingers after a shot or as a ball is being moved across the frame. "focus" Someday we'll
all get that one shot that's good enough for the cover of SI. :)

That might be too tight, but somewhere in between yours and Mark's shot, is probably the right amount of tightness. I think right now, too much leg is cut off.

carsandbballs ~ you'll love it. The lighting is just wonderfull.
joey ~ to be honest with you, I have just not been raising my hand on the mens games yet. When I shoot it, I want my work to be clearly be something out of the ordinary... and ordinary is all I can deliver right now. Trust me, I want to shoot it as soon as possible too. But this would be a first impression on a stage that I can't afford to mess up. I have been spending my time on sports where expectations are frankly less critical. I hope this makes sense.
Quasi ~ you are always much to nice... thanks though!
Grego ~ if you are inclined.. please feel free to play with it... I am at a loss still on the croping thing.
Happy Holidays all.....!

Hmmm.......now this is interesting. Granted I'm not a professional photog by any stretch of the imagination. But your images are as good (and most of the times better) than the "professional" shooters here (meaning Utah). And your stuff is as good as a lot of the stuff I've seen in magazines. It's funny how we are always harder on ourselves than most others tend to be. I understand where you are coming from. Your a perfectionist and you have standards that you are after. IMHO these are as good as what I've seen and better than most. And it's good to have people like you and some others in here that I admire to try and come up to your standards.

Blinking8's.... you need to hang around here more and contribute.... share some of what you have been learning!
Quasi~ just taken it slow and having fun.... I don't want it to feel too much like work, I already have another job that feels that way.
Merry Christmas \ Happy Holidays all!

Gavin I like them all. Each one is a specific moment and tell a story or shows the competivness or fight of the moment. I think there great work. The facial expressions are wonderfull. The are almost gladiator like. Keep up the good work and I hope that Santa brings you a great present.

Sorry - those images are on a machine I haven't touched for about a week. I am taking the next two days off and I will see if I can log onto that machine and pull it down for ya... appreciate the offer to work with it.

Don't worry about it Mark. Take your time. Just thought you might forget. By the time you get me the images, maybe I'll have finally put up my Stones concert images or my women's College Cup ones.
