View Full Version : Mistake Buying An ST-E2??

I just received my ST-E2 from UPS only to find out that it won't fire my 580EX in manual mode? Is this true? I think I just wasted $160! Is there any way to make it fire the 580EX in any mode other than E-TTL? All I want is an inexpensive way to fire my flash remotely.

Have you tried puting the 580EX in manual mode and setting the power on it and just using the ST-E2 to fire the 580EX. I don't have the ST-E2 so I don't know for sure but I am able to manual set the 580EX individually without needing to set the power on the master itself so I would think you'd be able to do the same with the ST-E2.

Is there a manual for it? I'd like a copy online, I have never had one and could do with it.

Hi,

Put 580 EX in a slave mode .... did you?

Thanks to all for replying. It seems that when you put the 580EX in slave, it sets the mode to E-TTL and disables the "mode" button. You can't change it! Unless I'm doing something wrong?
Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I just tried it again. I held the flash in my hand, set it to Manual, and then switched it to slave, which is the only way the ST-E2 will work with it. It automatically jumps to E-TTL mode. What a disappointment!
Carzee...if you reply with your email address, I'll scan the manual and email it to you. It's about fourteen pages long, but they're small. Are you on a Mac or Windows?

I have 2 580EX and ST-E2, you should be able to set the 580EX in M mode in slave setting. You have to push the mode button for about 2 second.

gbart has mailed me the scans of the ST-E2 manual. Thx a lot!

Now I can host it online as a series of html pages that load the jpg page scans and an index page.... should I?
Anyone interested?

From the sound of this thread; I think a lot of people in the future could benefit from this doc. Maybe an ST-e2 sticky/faq?

IIRC, vendors have asked people to not post their manuals on the Internet. This would also be a violation of the forum's ban on posting of material for which you don't own the copyright unless you secure written permission. Sorry to be a wet blanket - I'd like to get a copy for my files, too.
