Hi,
I'm new to the forum and have recently purchased a PS S45 ( cracking Camera so far, all praise and no probs yet!) although I am having trouble downloading pictures from the card reader that came bundled with my purchase.

I have had no trouble installing the camera software etc. and down load images straight from the camera, but when I use the card reader, something conflicts and my computer locks up.

I am using XP home as my OS, and have tried uninstalling and re-installing the hardware as instructed by the card reader manufacturer, to be honest I have spoken to a number of people, from the makers of my computer, the makers of the reader, the outlet that the camera came from, all gave good ideas to try none of which have worked.

I know the hardware is OK due to the fact that a colleague of mine tried the reader on his XP machine with no problems.

My system reports that the reader is working correctly and I can copy pictures from other sources (my Hard drive ,CD etc) and can paste them to the CF card via the reader and read them back no trouble, I'm sure fundamentaly it's working, but for some reason when I try to do anything with the Canon102 (or whatever it's called) directory in the DCIM directory on the card. Basically its the stuff the camera has saved that I can't get access to, I can see the jpeg icons for all of the images but can't view them as thumbnails (just Icons) and whenever I try to open or save any of them (using explorer or the canon software) my PC locks up.

Any one else had this problem or is it just me?

I have tried formating the CF card both via the Camera and in FAt 16 via the card reader and still no joy.

Any Ideas???

I can still download from the Camera so it isn't too much of an inconvenience, but it would be nice to get it working to save on battery power and justify the extra cost of the money saving bundle.

Any suggestions would be greatly apreciated.

Regards.

Try uninstalling the card reader software and use the card reader without it. Windows 2000 & XP are able to work with USB card readers without the drivers, you only need to install those with 95, 98 & ME. My laptop works fine with XP and without the drivers.

Cheers for the fast response Peter,
I forgot to mention that I did actually follow the guide lines for installation and didn't use the drivers due to the fact that the instructions indicated that I wouldn't neeed it when using XP, so I installed it without using any driver software, but just plugged it straight in and it installed itself, like I mentioned in the original post I have subsequently completely uninstalled it and re installed it twice. I think I am having some conflict somewhere but not sure where, I also wanted to mention this because I have seen a number of posts on this forum where people are having similar problems hooking up the camera and some sugestions have come in the form of 'don't bother , just get a card reader instead' but I wanted to make the point that I have had nothing but trouble with my card reader and have had no problem with the camera.

thanks again for the suggestion, do you have any more or does any one else have any ideas.

I don't hold out much hope for these suggestions but give them a try.

Remove all USB devices.

Boot without the reader plugged in.

Insert the card in the reader and then the reader in the USB port. You may get a 'ding' to say 'connection established'

See if you can open the card with explorer. (XP may well offer to do various things with the device before you get to explorer)

Repeat if necessary with any other USB ports you may have.

best of luck

Thanks for the suggestions,
I ended up borrowing two card readers from colleagues at work to see if theirs installed and worked on my system, both of which did.
I sent my reader back to the place I purchased it from and asked them to replace it with one of another type ( incase the installation was being corrupted for that partiular model) and hey presto evrything works fine, I now have full use of the card reader and can save on my download time and battery power.

Thanks again.
