View Full Version : 10D photos remaining question

Question:-

On the 10D, why does the number of images remaining change when you change shooting modes? Why do images taken using [P] mode seem to use more storage space than those taken using [Portrait] mode?

I'm sure it's not a problem, I just don't understand!

Cheers

Joe

Joe,

The remaining images is only an estimate based on remaining space and anticipated image size. In the easy shooting zones, image format defaults to large/fine JPG, if you have raw format set for P and other so-called creative modes, then the sums will change.

To help you a little more:

...in Portrait mode, the camera blurs (bokeh) the background, needing much less file space

than in

P mode, where everything in the photo will be sharp, thus requiring many more pixels to make the nice smooth lines.

So, the camera will estimate you have more photos available in Portrait than in P.

Hope that helps.

Nope,. thats not it either Wild Bill :D
...//and I'm shocked you missed it too Roger (although it is true it is an estimate)

Do me a favor,. turn on your camera and look at how many images you have room for on your camera.

Got the number?

Now ,.. increase the ISO setting a few clicks,.. hell go all the way up to 1600 ISO,. just endulge me. :)

Now,.. How many images do you have left now?

See? :D

It will be a lot less.

The higher the ISO setting the more color information needed to record the image,. the larger the filesize.

As it happens most of the scene mode presets have different ISO values setting built in. (for instance 400 ISO for sports mode) so when you change the dial you change the ISO you change the filesize for your images.

:D :D :D :D

Cheek! :) Never having used the easy shooting modes, I was "interpolating". :D

Anyway I did a little playing around.

Actually, we are both right. If you have the 10D set to raw for creative zones, switching to Portrait produces a huge change in the pictures remaining estimate.

If you are set for large/fine, then the estimate seems to depend on the ISO set in the creative zone. Portrait modes uses auto-ISO, and from the manual, Portrait mode uses ISO 100 under all conditions. (The other ES zones uses other rules.) If your creative zone ISO is 100, then the estimate does not change. I use ISO 200, so the estimate increased by around 30 pictures.

The higher the ISO setting the more color information needed to record the image,. the larger the filesize.

You can't get any more "colour information" than the bitys per pixel allow. It's the noise in higher ISO that is less compressable.

Thanks folks - I'm glad the answer wasn't as cut-and-dry as I thought it might have been...

Noise,.. not color,.. I knew I was in trouble while typing it,.. but I didn't know why :)
