Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a S400, and I'm loving it so far. But I noticed it sounded a little bit strange when the camera lens retracted... like something was causing the plastic to rattle as it went in. While I was nitpicking at the camera, I noticed a slight rattling sound when I shook it.

I've heard complaints with other Elph cameras, and that it's supposedly the orientation sensor... should I be worried? Can any other S400 users verify these sounds?

The rattle in my s230 is a detector for the orientation. I think it applies to the s400. Nothing to worry about. I can't help you with the noise. I suggest taking it back to where you bought it from and test their shop model to compare.

I have the S50 and it also has the "rattle" and it is the orientation sensor like khs8 said....sounds like a little bb or something?

However, I've never had the ball rattle unless you shake it next to your ear, then you can actually hear it. But when my lens retracts, it's only the gears making noise.
