Ah Auckland, the only city in the world that span to both the east and west coasts of the island it is on (I am not sure how Hong Kong and Singapore are excluded from that, but that is how I heard the fact).

(For the kiwis, in OZ the public schools all seem to have the same yellow and green uniforms)

I've got Nifty a little journal to keep track of his friends in.
A page per person with something like.
POTN Handle, country/town, date recieved, where you went together.
The pic on the cover and proverb are somehow appropriate :)

What are we using for shipping Nifty around? I've got a 6-can drinks cooler that would be good. Solid, water resistant, and take much more of a beating than cardboard. We use them to send samples off for lab analysis and Fedex have to work really hard to break anything in them.
So if its already well packed all is good. If you guys want though I could upgrade the packaging when it stops in Sacramento.

Unless Carzee has any plans I think I'm next. There are a couple of PotN members in my area that I can get it to.
After that it sounds like it will either be winging its way to Manitoba or driving down the valley to one of the hoard of PotN folks down there.
I hope it will get on well with my 24 f/2.8.

Nifty's Log, Stardate February 27th 2006.
Arrived in Sacramento California. Thought it was supposed to be hot here. Instead its raining and blowing a gale. Locals are friendly. Met a nice 24 f/2.8. He said he'd take me to a few of the local sights. There is a 17-40 L here as well. Never did like those overblown L lenses. They might have their swanky Ring-USM focus motors and La-de-da weather sealing and flourite lens elements (whatever the hell that is) but I'm still as sharp as them. Anyway, sure there will be some fun stuff to see and then its off to stay with a nice couple down south a ways. Should be fun.

We even had tornado warnings in Sacramento yesterday although none showed up. Would have made a good photo. It's actually nice and sunny at the moment (still windy though) but I'm figuring thats because I'm at work. It'll get nasty and raining again as soon as I get up to leave.
This weekend I'll be escorting members of the Danish parliament around a windfarm site near here. I'll definitely have Nifty with me. Plan is to get a decent slection of photos this weekend and then get Nifty in the mail Monday.

I've got some great shots of the exisiting turbines. The new ones that are due to be running by the end of May are Vestas (A Danish company) V90 turbines. They will be the biggest anywhere in the US. At least until someone else buys something bigger. At the moment though they are still in pieces on the ground, and the blades haven't even arrived yet. Fortunately there plenty of older turbines up and around.
On monday I'm due to be out there at the butt crack of dawn so there will be more opportunities for good shots as the sun burns through the early morning haze.

I was feeling guilty the Nifty hadn't been used the last couple of days. The weather was clear if a little windy so I tried to get some drive time photos on the way home.
I set a reasonable focus distance and then set Nifty to manual focus and f/4. Figured that would be enough. I learnt a few things. This idea wasn't nearly as good as it sounds. When shooting blind (not like I could look through the viewfinder) I tend to aim high. Very high. About halfway through I must have knocked the focus ring as all the rest are badly out of focus.
Anway, here is a quick shot of the sacramento skyline while driving past around 45mph.

Both eyes were on the road. I think it explains my spectacularly low success rate with this idea. :)

Well the weather sucked yesterday so no good wind turbine photos. Nifty did get used for a few shots of the Danish Minister for the Environment and her entourage but they aren't particularly exciting. Between crap weather and my wife being sick it really has limited the tourist opportunities.
Of course today the weather is much nicer so maybe I'll take Nifty off to get some shots of the capitol building.

I'll upload a few when I get home tonight. I'm kind of bummed that the weather is being so crappy. It's been really nice this morning so I figured I'd cut out of work early. Almost as soon as I'd made that decision the weather decided to get crappy again. I just took a few 'rain on window' shots so at least Nifty is doing something. :)

Well I think there are some uploaded. Unfortunately just as I got all the captions and such in and the photoshare server seems to have gone temporarily toes up.
I'll try later to get captions on and the link and such.

If whoever setup the image hosting thingie (carzee i think?) wants one of us to give them a call I dont mind doing it - Its free for us to yell at the, but you might have to pay $$ for toll calls!

Photoshare still seems to be somewhere in the dark side of the internet. I guess the Nifty photos were too much for them. And this is before Nifty ever made it to Charlesu over in the glamour & nude section. :)
I'll host mine locally until the site is back up. Expect links soon.

There are a few of us with our own hosting solutions. I think the idea was to get it on a third party image hosting server to increase the likelyhood of everything surviving. I could easily throw 400Mb of space at it but if I then decided tomorrow that I'm bored with Canon and that Vivitar is a much better photo solution the Nifty photos may get hard to reach. :)
Thanks for the offer though.

I'm not going to have any time today to throw a quick website together so I figured I'd at least provide links. Hopefully the host will be back on line soon.

Most of my Nifty photos are up. Got a couple more to add though. The weather folks keep saying the weather is going to continue being crappy so I figured its time for Nifty's journey to continue so he can have a second CA stop before heading up to Manitoba.
He is wrapped and addressed and sitting on my desk. I'll try and sneak out early to make sure I get to the post office.

Didn't make it to the post office last night but he's on his way now, priority mail, so should only be a couple of days. Monday probably, Tuesday if not.
so, what happened to iboys 1 through 25? Is it a Lilo and Stitch type idea? The first 25 sucked but they think the 26thiboy will work out good? :)

i'm getting excited to see nifty soon!!!
I'll make sure to get some good sterotypical canadian shots... big burley random animails...
speaking of which i wonder if the apartment turkey will be back by the time nifty gets here... yes funny story... i have been living in the same apartment for the last three years (as of may of this year) and when I first moved in there was a turkey... yes a wild turkey. Now you have to realize i live right in the city, not somewhere on the fringe near a farm. So anyways every spring this turkey has re-appeared, don't know where it goes for the nasty a$$ canadian winter, but regarless its a weird sight every year especailly for people that come to visit, "so yeah i almost ran over a turkey in your parking lot??!?"...
and i'll make sure to get lots of shots of vast white nothingness... because there is a lot of that around here =)
oh getting excited... hehehhe!

Actually I have 26T HighBoy roadster. It sits on 32 ford rails with a Chevy small block. Everyone refers to me as the 26thiboy guy.

Nice set of wheels. I think you could get some very nice photos of that with a nifty little 50mm lens. :)

Re the opposite end to the pointy end... see what happens when you break rules! Lens testing around here is usually done on a duck, not a duckshound.

I'm glad I sent him onwards. You seem to have sun and I'm still sitting through gray skies and rain. Snow level is down to 1,000 feet. Nowhere near home but my wife is having to drive through snow now on her way to work.
Have fun with Nifty. Kampphoto, you may want to PM over your details if you haven't already.

Maybe the 1.4 version. I've had a 1.8 before and nifty bought back lots of memories. Some of them involving loud, slow autofocus and ebay. :) Still, amazingly sharp little lens though.
