Well, Nifty has finished his tour of the Morro Bay coast and will be off to Kampphoto in Canada today. Nifty had a great time in Morro Bay visiting several interesting sights including the local fish market where he enjoyed a Calamari lunch. The weather was sunny most of the time and with plenty of sunscreen is leaving with a nice suntan. My schedule is very busy the next few days so I will post photo's late this week. USPS Priority should get Nifty to Canada so he can enjoy the white stuff, burr I hope he doesn't freeze.

Hey I see a G1 sitting there. I had one of those for a while. It took a lot of crap before finally giving up the ghost. Wierd thing was the screws kept on falling out the case. I ended up sacrificing an A20 to keep it from falling apart.

Oh, and if you decide to take an A20 apart it has a built in flash so make sure the capacitor that fires the flash is well discharged. Having it discharge into your fingers when you pick the half disassembled camera up and manage to short the thing is painful and leaves a burn that lasts for a couple of weeks. It also makes the woman in the cube next to you ask "Ok what did you just do?" when you are yelping and swearing in pain so you have to explain your stupidity.

Or so I've heard, I'm certainly not that dumb. :) :)

Kevin
21st of March 2006 (Tue), 13:51
I bought this G1 new when they first came out. It's my kick around camera now and still takes good pictures. I have heard of several people that have had problems with the G1, but knock on wood it keeps going. I want to buy a new P&S but hard to justify when the G1 still works fine for what I use it for.
I hate capacitors, you never know whats going to happen when you pick one up.

No crop on these.

"Its a long way to the shop if you wanna sausage roll."

OK, what is the deeper meaning of that sig? :)

Carzee
29th of March 2006 (Wed), 00:33
Its a colloquialism, an aussie expression about life in general. You ask... sausage roll? Eh? How do these quirky things happen? Thats why all the Sociologists flock here. Its a popular corruption of the famous ACDC band anthem, "Its a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll."

It is my considered opinion (and I have a LOT of experience with opinions) that genes have considerably more to do with happiness and health than wealth and possessions. I also believe it is the process, not the product, that is rewarding in life. None-the-less, I will not give up my current Canon equipment.

I can't understand why it's taking Nifty so long to travel to Winnipeg. I mailed him (her) on the 20th of March. Surely our superior mail service can get a small package to Winnipeg faster than 3 weeks. For general info the Customs form number is
LC317722629US. It is only a 1 lb. 7.20 oz. package.

Hey Dwight, with your gear list you might consider trading in one of those high dollar pedal bikes for a Mercedes also. It's not very impressive pedaling up to the casino for your concert shoots.

Maybe Nifty needs a Carnet certificate or whatever they're called. Salesman going to trade shows can cross borders with goods as long as they take them back over the border when they leave. Its a sort of visa for goods to avoid duty and taxes such as what the Canadians want to collect.

1. Its such a small value item.... unbelieveable. A set of skates would be worth more. If a service dad sent a set of boots from his PX in Eurostan to his nephew in Alberta.... would it be taxed? We're not talking a big expensive luxury item here. Is Canada that broke?

2. If I drove to Alberta and had Nifty in my luggage as a gift would it be taxed?

Well thats the wonderful world of customs... I've bought $400 lights from a fellow in So-Cal on eBay, and didn't pay a dime in customs charges... its so hit or miss with them, I guess it depends on who puts the item through and if their having a bad day or not.

How was it shipped? USPS? Usually that skips right through the border.
Sending UPS is a red flag to get bent over... I hope that wasn't the case.

Perhaps the senders should mark the box as a "gift" or "product return for repairs" or something of that nature.

Now my post asking what happened to iboys 1 through 25 makes even less sense than it originally did.

It would appear that since he has volunteered to drive Nifty around to all his friends (like in Buellton) that someone made him a moderator! Gotta' change your name to be a moderator so no one knows who you really are! :-)

When I joined the forum I used my same screen name as for the hotrod forums. Actually My wife and I own a 1926 Ford T highboy roadster. So goes the 26thiboy screen name. Hope that helps identify 1 through 25.:) BTW, last week.

It would appear that since he has volunteered to drive Nifty around to all his friends (like in Buellton) that someone made him a moderator! Gotta' change your name to be a moderator so no one knows who you really are!

My good buddy Dwight, if you read my post carefully you will discover I never mentioned driving Nifty around Buellton. Besides, your taking a lot for granted with that friend thing.    Besides they told me that if I changed my name and agreed to give you a hard time for the next year then I could be moderator.

Well, Kevin, it doesn't surprise me that they are requiring that you harrass me ... I know that Belmondo has worn out his two typing fingers trying that. :p But I am surprised you don't recall your commitment to drive Nifty down to my place for an afternoon with your daughter, er, um, I mean, wife, and buy me lunch in the bargain ... how old did you say you were again?:lol: I guess so long as annoyotoms isn't a moderator I'll survive!

Well Dwight in a week moment, I guess, I mean, that I might have made that commitment. Someone once told me that when you get old two things happen to you. You lose your memory.......and..........I can't remember the second.

Well, I understand and am just comforted by the fact that I am sure you did not forget the $50 you owe me. Just bring it when you come down with Nifty to buy me lunch, eh?

Oh the ignominy of it all! I have very sad news…….....…(Taps plays in the background (http://www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/lyrics/taps.htm)) .................................. Nifty is dead.
Nifty arrived Saturday morning after being subjected to who knows what kind of hellish torture at the hands of the Customs Revenue Agents of the Frozen North. He had been tortured and broken in body but not in spirit. As he lay dying on our kitchen table, his twin rushed from my camera bag to his side. With his last breath Nifty gasped the secret codes to his twin.
This twin bravely vowed to take up Nifty’s continuing mission, to seek out and find POTN members throughout the world and to bravely go where no Nifty has gone before.
After spending some time and seeing the sights with the Souza’s, the new Nifty will then be heading to the northeastern United States where it is hoped that after meeting new POTN members and having many great adventures he will be safely hand transported across the border to our friends in the Great White North.
The Saga of Nifty Continues

I have included images of Nifty being comforted by his twin in his last moments and of the new Nifty dressed for his adventures.

Skip, what a sorrow picture - never seen the guts of a beloved friend (which I haven't even met personally yet.) - Any possiblity to sue Canadian customs?

Wondering how Maureen could take the strawberry picture ... ???

Well.
Its like a sort of blow. I'm curious at my own reaction. Weird.
Could we have some macro/CSI pics? What was the cause of death? A blow to the whole carton? I thought Nifty was packed well enough for Middle East duty!

...and glad to see a twin taking up the challenge. Hopefully New Nifty will see more than 3 or 4 countries. Par Oneri.

I too was stunned and saddened. The outer box was not particularly deformed. Internal plastic bits of the focus mechanism that retained the moving lens element were broken off. Probably took some heavy shocks. Reminds me of Jim Carey in Pet Detective kicking the UPS box down the walk way. Perhaps they used it for football. :-(
In any event I will try to add cushioning to protect it, more bubble wrap or Styrofoam peanuts.

The way Nifty was packed it would be him and the cockroaches after a nuke war.

LOL.
Actually, plastic's half-life is 200,000 years or so. :)
Nifty may spend a while in landfill, but those parts in sum will still be Nifty as we have known him... for a LONG LONG time to come!

Actually, all our gear will outlast us unless it meets up with lava or something.

AND
i hope these things don't come in "threes" but...
]
I'm trying out a minty 70-200f2.8L "UM" -should arrive tomorrow.

Woohoo!

And I've got 2 weeks to return it or buy it.

Sounds like a good deal?

It happened this way. A seller had 2 white lenses for sale. I wanted only the one L, a 300mm f4 IS, not the 70-200mm.

Ah, the plans of mice and men. I paid for the 300mm and then the email I expect to confirm shipping/tracking says instead that he's dropped it on the floor whilst packing it and its a bad case of cracked glass etc etc. Past economic repair probably. Insurance can fix it, but....

So he's sending me the other lens to try out, just as I said. Or money back.

This has happened the same week Nifty died in transit.

Watch out for number 3...

Happy Birthday, Maureen! 29 again? Sorry to hear Nifty got the treatment at customs. Thanks for continuing this wonderful adventure, Skip. I, for one, would have been sad to see this end. Great strawberries. It's that time of year. Must be beautiful in CA.

Send Nifty this way soon! GO NIFTY's TWIN! :)

What a bummer about Nifty.:( Do we need a new name for his valiant replacement? Or is this like James Bond? I still would like to give Nifty a tour of Charlotte when he heads this way.

Happy birthday Maureen! And you look great for 29! :)

This is shocking. Apparently Nifty was subjected to some rough interrogation by Canadian security people---another innocent victim of the tensions in today’s world.

We can be heartened by the fact that he died being among friends. We can be further comforted with the knowledge that his replacement is much more than a twin. He is a clone, genetically identical to Nifty.

MazerRakhm
8th of May 2006 (Mon), 10:52
Who said cloning was only for sheep.

In protest of their mistreatment of Nifty I will stop cheering for any Canadian hockey teams. (Pretty easy for a Blackhawks fan, Hockey has been over in this town for quite some time.)

MazerRakhm

I thought about saying that at first as well, but last time we had Canadian Bacon it was made in the USA, and when I complained to the wife about false advertising she gave me this look:  and told me I was an idiot.

This is the result of rampant terrorism throughout the world. I'm surprised that Nifty wasn't "rendered" to some third world country where they would take pictures of him without his lens cap on! Perhaps even wired up directly to a PocketWizard, trying to get the vast POTN secrets from him. This is a sad, sad outcome for our brave little soldier, May He Rest in Peace. But I don't think we should hold his mistreatment by the government against our many loyal and generous friends in the north ... I am only going to boycott Canadian stamps.

Wow, what a sad turn of events! I mean what happened to nifty - Happy Birthday Maureen by the way :) Anyway I am glad Nifty has a clone, I have no doubt he will perform just as well.

By the way, is the original nifty still working optically? I have a 1.8 here that has a broken motor, but it still focuses manually. Take great pictures too. He can be saved :) Just patch him up with gaffer's tape or something, and send him to those who like to MF. Like me, for example :)

It looks like Nifty was torn limb from limb by Customs looking for mas quantities of drugs and pornography. This act shall not go unpunished, I must wright my Congressman and report this ghastly treatment. Who is my Congressman? Where is my pen and paper? It's a good thing Customs didn't know about Nifties twin. May the Force be with you, Nifties Twin. With Light Saber in hand may you continue to travel to POTN members throughout the world.

Citizensmith

That really does seem to be crappy handling on the part of Canadian customs. I think I'll go watch the southpark movie and cheer lots. Or not eat real Canadian Maple syrup for a month. Actually I can't remember the last time I did so thats not too much of a threat.

Next time Nifty II crosses a border we may want to tap on a bit of insurance or find a PotN member as a carrier? That was a well packed lens but I guess enough rough treatment will kill anything.

NordieBoy

I wanted to keep it under wraps that when I took Nifty out of the box, it came out in 3 pieces and just quietly replace it with our Nifty. But Skip was intent on telling the gruesome story and so Nifty II will make a trip to the Giant Sequoias this Thursday.

The first person who PM's me their address will be the recipient of Nifty next week.

In protest of custom Canada's handleing of nifty, I will refuse to pay taxes for year and I will refuse to eat poutine for a day. Beavertails will be on the No-No list for 48 hours. I will refure to attend an Expos baseball game this season and I will not re-string my snowshoes untill next January.
That will make them sit up and pay attention.
