this blows me away... and they wanted me to pay $70 in duty? is there an insurance claim in the works... i'm at a loss for words....
wow.
and on the duty... I was reading a story in a winnipeg news paper about a fellow that received a gift from family in holland. the gift, a box of cigarillos worth about 15 euros... the duty for said gift as charged by canadian customs, about $550/cdn.

If you know someone who can safely sneak him across the border, Jacob, maybe we can get Nifty II to you yet. :)

Going back a few decades, when I had a Penpal (remember them), if I sent a canadian a little gift, would they have to pay tax before they could get there parcel?
Or what if an Canadian exchange student wants to send some gifts home to mum and dad --is it taxed?

well generally speaking gifts aren't taxed unless its obviously not gift... like for example if someone sent me a 70-200mm f2.8L IS and said it was a gift customs would probably laugh at me. But for example some one sends me a DVD and says its a gift, it's a little more believable.

Question about Nifty I. How serious is the damage? Can you still focus manually?

Well, Maureen says I can have Nifty #2 next if no one else wants him. But since my back is sprained (or God knows what else ... I go to PT this morning) and I don't have any concerts for two weeks, I am willing to sacrifice and wait for his next rotation around the globe. So, if anyone else is anxious you need to send Maureen your address via PM. If not, then I will take Nifty #2 wine tasting when Maureen is done having her way with him.
Carzee, can you edit the original post here to have a link to the new thread for Nifty #2?

Does anyone have Nifty's birth and (sob) death dates?
I've started a memorial gallery at his web home and if people want to send flowers (taken at 50mm f1.8 ) they are welcome.
I'm sure he would have appreciated it.
In the short time I knew him he made an impression on me. So much so that I couldn't be without his special brand of humour, the jokes shared in hushed tones around a low-light f1.8 camp fire, the treks up the mountain, the hot chocolate.
He is the one who badgered me into adopting my very own Nifty.
Sob, goodbye dear (well-quite-cheap-actually) friend

If we ever get a "roving" 400mm f/2.8 (a.k.a. Cannon?), can I be first in line after the person who buys it?

Not this late no, I think there are already around 74 people in the line. You are however welcome to join it.
I just checked and there isn't anyone in the EF38-76 f/4.5-5.6 line so you can jump right on in there.
