View Full Version : Cincinnati POTN meet?

Pyromaniac
21st of December 2005 (Wed), 21:08
For a while I was starting to think that I was (and maybe I was, but probably not) the only one on the forum from Cincinnati. Then graykita posted this thread http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=119327 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=119327) and two other Cincinnatians responded too.

So now I know there are other POTN members in Cincy I was thinking maybe we should get together for a meet and shoot. Other POTN members in other cities have done it and it seemed to go well. So I'm asking how many Cincinnati and northern Kentucky members would be interested in getting together?

Once a few people have responded we can work out the details, so any one interested just respond below.

Hope the mods fix your thread title. I'm trying to get an NYC one going, too.

One of these days maybe I'll learn to type. LOL  I realized that as soon as it can up after I hit the post button.
Edit: I just pm'ed a moderator to have it corrected.

I'd definitely be down for a "Photo on Net The" meet. :)

Anyone is also always welcome to stop in my store in Northern Kentucky to say hi. It's called Entertainment Solutions, and is a mid-high end home theater store. It's in the back of the new Crestview Hills Town Center off of Dixie Hghwy and 275. (one exit east of 75/71). My name's Dave, and believe me, whether you're into TV's or not, it's a fun store to check out!

Anyways, keep me in touch via PM if and when we decide to meet. I'd be down for lunch, or if you want to go downtown some night and shoot the skyline, whatever!

Like I said maybe some day I'll learn to type. Oh well.

Alright we got one person in, actually I guess technicaly two counting myself. I figure there are probaly more than just the three of us that list Cincinnati under our avatars, so Im hoping a few of them see this and are interested.

Sounds like a fun store, I'm not a "TV" person per say, but more of a "tech" person. I love gadgets and tech stuff. You must be busy this time of year. From what I heard ( I haven't been there yet) that's a pretty good mall, and being close to there has to be a good location.

trippinbillies40
21st of December 2005 (Wed), 21:54
Do you mean you live close to there? The area seems pretty nice. However, I live in West Chester right now. Makes for one LONG drive to work each day. :) By the way, if you're a techy person, you'd probably dig the home automation stuff we carry, and the d-box motion chairs.

Pyromaniac

No I live in MT. Lookout, but work out in Harrison, so I'm feelin ya on the drive. One of the guys at work lives over that way in KY, so all I kow about the area really is what I've heard from other people.

I am in for a meet for sure. I have a lot to learn and enjoy meeting new people. I live in Florence and work in Covington so i can't complain about the drive although that stretch of highway (cut in the hill) is the worst :-) I have never been to your store Dave but i might just stop by soon, when are you usually there? My name is Sarah by the way.

Just let me know when and where and i will be there!

It usually changes every week. We're obviously closed Christmas and New years, and on top of that for now, I know I'm off on the 30th, 2cnd, and 7th. Other than that, I'll be here! Nice to meet you!

Pyromaniac
22nd of December 2005 (Thu), 23:48
I guess thats two people confirmed so far. There has to be a few more out there.

I guess I should ask trippinbillies and graykita what you would be interested in doing? I work 8am to 5pm Monday thru Friday, and have weekends off so I'm pretty flexible with when and where. I figure after we get the holidays out of the way and people's schedules aren't as hecktic. Let me know what you guys think.

I'm Joe by the way.

trippinbillies40
23rd of December 2005 (Fri), 08:24
Well I go to school full time on top of working full time. As of right now, unless it's meeting after 8 somewhere, I'm booked until mid January between work, school, my business fraternity, and a trip to Detroit for the Auto Show. But again, I am always off by 8 if we'd like to meet at Star Bucks or something just to chat, maybe show off some equipment.

I might be up for a drive to Cincinnati. I live in the Louisville area, 2 hours away is no big deal for me. It just a matter of when. Weekends would be best but mostly it depends on what I may have scheduled that may conflict. Post a time and place and I'll let you know if I can attend.

I work Monday thru Friday 8:30 - ???? never know my schedule but Weekends i will make the time to meet. I enjoy photographing the City, Animals, Nature, People but i am up for anything :-)

Hi Jeff, Your more than welcome to join us.

It looks to me like a weekend in mid to late January would work out for most of use.
I don't have any commitments for any of the weekends in January so if you guys and gal want to throw out a few dates that work for you we'll see if there are any common one's for all of us.
I've been wanting to do some cityscape/street photgraphy but no one ever seems to be interested in joining me. I'm not big on walking around downtown with my gear by myself, with out the gear I don't have a problem walking around town but thats kind of boring. LOL.

jeffherald
23rd of December 2005 (Fri), 12:24
I'm looking into the dates (actually I'm checking with my wife ;-). So far it looks like most any weekend day in January should be good. The only issue may be weather. You never know about that around here.

I'll probably bring my brother too. He is a member of this site as well and lives near me. He is also a Canon junkie.:D

jeffherald
23rd of December 2005 (Fri), 13:42
Ok, I'm good for the following dates in Jan '06:
7th, 8th, 14th, 21st, 22nd and maybe the 28th.

Let's go and let's hope the weather cooperates :) .

graykita
23rd of December 2005 (Fri), 23:03

I guess we'll see what works for Dave then see about setting a date. I want everone that intested to be able to attend. If you know of any other members from the area pass word on to them.

I invited Indy Jeff who shoots motorsports but he's busy, but suggested if we do another meet around August he would be down this way for a race at the Kentucky Speed way.

Louisville is a great town to shoot in too

Devou park is a pretty good spot for getting shots of Cincinnati. You'll have to post some of them for us.

Looks like the 21st seems to work for most of us. Jeff, the more the merrier. Everyone should feel free to bring anyone you think would be interested even if they aren't POTN menbers (we'll just explain the benifits of belonging to a great community like this one and get them to join  ).

There are a lot of great spots around town, Eden Park, Ault Park, Devou Park, Downtown. Eden Park has Krohn Conservatory, which would probably be good for shooting inside. I'm not really sure about other indoor locations that would be good for shooting, but just as a place to meet one of my favorite places to hang out is a coffee shop called Lookout Joe's in Mt. Lookout.

I know there are more than what I listed so if anyone else can think of some thing throw it out there. I'm sure there are also some good spots across the river to, but I'm not as familiar with that area.

I saw Lookout Joe's suggested as a meeting place, can someone please provide an address? Someone suggest a time.

I'm looking forward to it.:D

Unless someone can think of somepalce better to meet Lookout Joe's is Ok. There isn't much around there to shoot, but it's a good place to sit and talk and the coffee is pretty good to. The address is 3181 Linwood Avenue, Cincinnati Oh 45208. Here is a link to Yahoo Maps (http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=3181+Linwood+Avenue&csz=Cincinnati+OH&country=us&new=1&name=&qty=) and you can get the directions from there. That will be much better than me trying to explain go to this light and turn left then anothe light and turn right ect., since I've lived here almost my whole life and can't remember the street names. I just know where to go and when to turn.

Jeff, since your coming from the farthest away I don' t want you to have to get up and leave before the crack of dawn so given the drive time what would be a good time for you. The rest of us can be anywhere in the city in around 30 minutes or so depending on the traffic.

Here is a liknk to a search I ran on CityBeat magazine's website (http://citybeat.com/gyrobase/Listings/UniversalListingsDisplay?m=01&d=20&Y=2006&endm=01&endd=22&endY=2006&UniversalCategory=Attractions&UniversalDistrict=*)for things going on between the 20th and 22nd on January.

Here is a link to the Cincinnati park's website (http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/parks/), and here is one for Hamilton County parks website (http://www.hamiltoncountyparks.org/). You can look throught those and see if thee's anything there that interest anyone. Then there's also all the stuff I haven't thought of so feel free to toss idea's out there.

Alright, how about 10:00am as a meeting time? My brother will be coming with me and he works nights so he gets home at about 6:30. I can get him and leave by 8:00 and be there by 10:00. I may bring someone else as well, although he hasn't commited yet.

The coffee place sounds like a good meeting location. The map and address provided is good enough for me.

We'll bring our cameras and be ready to shoot. We'll just follow your lead on what to do next.

Pyromaniac, I'll PM you with my cell phone number. Keep it handy in case you want to change plans. Thanks for hosting this meet. I will try to host one in Louisville, probably in April during the Derby festivities.

Pyromaniac

10am on the 21rst. Check.

I suggest we meet at a park instead of a coffee shop though if we're meeting to take pictures. Unless it's raining outside of course. I am really wanting to check out Devou park and maybe make some panorama's of the cincy skyline.

Pyromaniac
29th of December 2005 (Thu), 21:45
Devou Park works for me. I just thru the coffee shop out there since no one else had made any suggestions, and it does give us a place to go if the weather is bad. If no one objects, we'll use Devou Park as our fair weather meeting location and the coffee shop as our foul weather location. I want these to be group decisions, I don't want people to think that it's my way or the highway.

trippinbillies40
29th of December 2005 (Thu), 21:49
Good. Cause it's my way or the highway! :)

(j/k of course)

I think I'm going to cheat and go scout out Devou and some places in Covington tomorrow since I'm off work all day. If anyone is up for an impromptu get together, send me a PM. I won't have anything important to do all day.

jeffherald

Queenbee: I am planning to host a meet in Louisville on April 29th. That is the middle weekend of Derby festivities. Since it's been a week since anyone responded I thought I would give this a bump. Hopefully we will have some good weather to shoot in. I went up to Devou Park last weekend for a bit and tried to get some shots that would stitch together to make a nice pano didn't work out to well though. Clouds gave me inconsistent lighting and didn't get the camera quite level for a couple of them.

graykita

I am SO busy tomorrow too. I would love to be out taking advantage of the weather. I really want to get a shot of my car parked up at Devou so the cincy skyline is the background. Oh well, it'll have to wait till summer I guess.

Also, (though I think I should keep my mouth shut to better my odds) :), the Hamilton ice sculpture thing is this weekend, and there's a photo contest. I'll be there Friday night somewhere around 9pm. I'm meeting my Aunt there to help her learn her new EOS20d. If anyone wants to meet up, PM me for my cell # and call me when you're there!

Depending on the day and time. I've got a pretty busy schedule, but it's always more fun shooting with someone rather than on your own. Count me in. I live in Newtown and work in Fairfax (Rt. 50/Columbia Parkway).

where the hell is the nature center?

It's on the Eastside towards Eastgate. Turn onto Teatown Rd off Old State Route 74. It's a couple miles down the road on the left. It's easy to pass. You will pass a Little League ball park on the right about 1/2 mile before the entrance.

Hope that helps.

I'm not sure if I can make it on the 17th. I've got my son that night. Good luck. I think I'm going this Saturday. I may even go during the week (take a vacation day) when it's not so crowded. I think the Photography night will be less crowded than an ordinary Saturday. On the weekends, you can get some good shots of children with the butterflies. Anyway..... goodluck.

In addition to the nature center, Newport on the Levey, Findlay Market, Hyde Park Sqaure and Ault park are some of my favorite places to go photogrpah people. Old houses abound in the Hyde Park/Mt. Lookout/Columbia area.

Where do you like to take pictures around Cinci?

Possibly you might want to link up at the Camera Club of Cincinnati at some regular meeting night (every Thursday at 8:00 PM).

See:

http://www.ccofc.net/

The Camera Club of Cincinnati is at 7045 Vine Street, in the Cincinnati community of Carthage. It is just off exit #9 on I-75.

I know I missed last Cincy meet, but since it looks like a few more Cincy members have popped up, who's up for doing another one. Like before we'll see what works for every one and pick a date that works for the majority.

If we can plan out a few weeks in advance, I can make sure to be off now. Especially if we can swing something besides a Saturday.

Hey I live in NKY and Im game for meeting up. I am looking for something really urban or like anything rundown. Railyard or buildings that have seen better days. Anyone have any ideas?

I know that there are a few more POTN'ers in the area so lets see if we can get somemore responses then work on a date. Weekend are probably best for most people, I'm also off on weekends. Are there any events coming up that would be good to go to as a group? Steve's urban idea is a good one.

I am up for anything, weekends are workable for me as long as we stay local, cant be making trips to Dayton or anything being on the weekends I work nights. Does anyone belong to the Camera club of Cincinnati? I have joined recently. Let me know in advance because I have a couple of model shoots scheduled coming up that will be taking up some of my weekends.

I know there are more PONTer's in Cincinnati that this. This is a great time of year to get out and shoot, and meet some of the local POTN members. The butterfly show at Krohn Conservatory goes through June 24. There are probably a ton of great shots to be had there. If any one is interested let me know and we'll start working on a date.

Pyro, I live in Florida now, but am originally from Cincy. I only wish that I had been into photography when I was still there. The opps are almost unlimited, Krohns Conservatory, Eden Park, Ault Park and on and on. I'm jealous, but I will look you up the next time I get to visit ( family still lives there, and I wish I did ).

Oooohhhh, I know someone who would be very interested in the Butterfly Show at Krohn Conservatory. Is there an entry charge?

I posted a question on another thread about sunset and nighttime shots of downtown Cincy. Any of you guys know good locations to achieve such shots?

Ok, I'll add this here. I want to get some nice portrait shots of the family and I don't want just the standard tree shot. Are there any nice spots in the Southwest Ohio area for these type of shots? Where have you guys/gals gone? Thanks. Also, bump to the top for a local meet.

First off, "GO BUCKEYES"....now that thats out of my system. Even though I dont live there now, I was born and raised there. Ther are many good places for outdoor portraits. Ault Park ( Hyde Park/Mt. Lookout area) plenty of flowers etc. as well as a pavillion area (2 story) very nice. Eden Park has a man made lake and many nice photo spots. The riverfront ie..Serpentine wall area. Krohns Conservatory. The list goes on......

Depending on when this happens I may ride up from Louisville. Would love to meet some fellow POTN members. Hopefully my schedule will allow for it.

If you are in Cincinnati and you want to link up with area photographers, just go to the Camera Club of Cincinnati any Thursday PM at 8:00.

Here is the link to their website:

http://www.ccofc.net/

It is at 7045 Vine Street, just a few blocks east of Exit #9 on I-75. It is just two storefronts south of the corner of Vine and Seymour.

I have been a member for about 12 years. It is a good place to interact with other photographers, and the club has a nice facility.

Enjoy! Lon

I'm going to trundle down to Cincy later today with my better half. Probably going to head to the Krone Conservatory late afternoon, grab some dinner, then try and get some dusk/night shots of downtown - any advice on the best location (other than Newport on the Levee) for this sort of shot?

Its a little late, but you can go over to Devou Park in Covington. Here's a link to a map that you can use to get directions. http://maps.citysearch.com/map/view/11322554 From the overlook you can get some pretty good city shots.

Anyone going to Riverfest Sunday? I'm not sure if I'm going or not. I'm not sure if I want to deal with the crowds, but it could make for some good shots.

Yes. Captured Elegance & I are going, but I think we're going to leave the camera at home. Not been before, heard it is VERY busy and don't fancy lugging our gear around in those crowds tbh.

Pyromaniac
2nd of September 2007 (Sun), 07:45
It will be very busy, between the two sides of the river there are usually around 500,000 people that go. If you have never been you should enjoy it. They have about 3 barge loads of fireworks they park in the middle of the river, plus whatever they have on the bridges and it will take almost 30 minutes for them to set all of them off. Hope you you have fun.
